You're not really sure when it happened. When things changed. Celebrating the latest victory at Papa Joe's with your friends normally leaves you feeling relaxed, calm. Today though… today you're feeling anxious. Claire and Jill say their goodbyes and you wave, wishing them well. When Cindy starts to move you feel a heaviness in your chest and with it comes the realisation that you don't want her to leave.

Not yet.

Your body moves of its own accord, opening the door and walking with her across the car park. You shove your hands deep into the pockets of your jeans, desperately trying to find something to hold onto. Something, anything that'll take your thoughts away from the girl with fiery red hair standing barely a foot away.

"Do you want to come to mine and maybe… watch a movie or something?"

You stop walking. You can feel the shock working its way over your features as the words finish leaving your mouth. Cindy keeps moving and for a moment a part of you hopes that maybe you didn't actually ask the question out loud?

That thought is answered when she slowly turns to face you. Her bottom lip is caught between her teeth and although it's a look you've seen a thousand times before you find yourself entranced. Her eyes appear to be dancing as she looks at you, obviously pretending to give some serious consideration to her answer.

As the silence between you lengthens you can feel your throat start to tighten. You don't remember consuming a golf ball but that's exactly what it feels like when she smiles and you try to swallow.

She moves closer and you can feel your heart rate increasing. Your hands, still in your pockets, curl into themselves. Fingernails dig into the soft flesh of your palm letting you know that this is real.

"Can I choose the film?"

She's now standing so close that with the whispered question her breath ghosts across your skin. You shiver involuntary, causing her smile to grow. You know you have to say something, do something, if only to regain control of yourself and the situation but a small nod is all you can manage. Her close proximity seemingly strikes you dumb.

Before your mind can fully register exactly what is happening, soft lips brush fleetingly against yours. The heaviness in your chest and the lump in your throat melt instantly, replaced with a warmth that spreads throughout your whole being.

You may not be not sure when it happened, when things changed, but right here and right now is the moment you'll always remember as the beginning; the start of something new.
