Chivalry

The cell was dark and damp. Out of the silence, he could hear water dripping somewhere far off, and the rats squeaking and scratching as they scurried across the floor into the prison walls. Eyes journeyed to the corner where a female was sitting quietly.

She looked haggard. She was shivering cold, her teeth chattering. Her casual shirt looked thin and probably not warm enough to fend off the chill of the underground dungeons. Yet in spite of everything, her eyes met his with determination.

His features softened, and with a heave of a sigh, he stood up. He tried not to show the tremors of his injured leg as he walked the short distance between them before he settled down on her side, his back against the concrete wall. He took his jacket off and languidly placed it over her shoulders. He smiled when she blinked in surprise.

He watched as her brows curled, ever so slightly, into a mimic of worry before her mouth parted for a kind objection. "Kurama-san, I don't think—" she began but the kind look he offered made her pause, instead, her lips arched upward. "Arigatou," she whispered, her cheeks warming in a pretty hue.

He gave a small nod, then turned and rested his head back against the wall. He felt her lean more towards him, enough that their shoulders brushed but not quite touching. He closed his eyes. I guess this is alright. It was nothing after all, only common courtesy.
