Leonard was caught off guard when his PADD dinged from where he'd left it on his desk. It was "late"—according to the ship's chronometers—and Medbay was entirely empty. He wasn't expecting a message from anyone. McCoy pushed himself up and crossed the room. Leaning idly against the desk, he opened his inbox to see that he had been messaged by Jim. His eyebrows made a valiant escape attempt as he scanned the message.
Dear Bones
I love you. Just thought you should know.
He was still staring blankly at the words when the door to Medbay whooshed open to reveal a red-faced and huffing Jim, looking for all the world like he'd just run flat-out across the ship. He probably had.
"Bones, where's your PADD!" Jim shouted, already searching, even before the words left his lips. His eyes fell on the PADD in Leonard's hand, and he visibly blanched, though he reached for it all the same. Leonard just shifted it out of his reach.
"I already read it." He said, and Jim stilled.
"I can explain." He said, much quieter this time, though his cheeks were growing steadily brighter as he explained himself, "I mean, you weren't supposed to…I didn't mean to send that. Pay no attention to it…just a…comment fail."
Jim whirled around on his heel and made for the door. He'd barely made it past the doorframe when his PADD dinged. He looked down at the reply and opened it without turning.
