The eve of the reaping, Gale's voice repeated like a broken record in Katniss Everdeen's mind.
It was a dull night for District 12- darkness, mist and no stars in the sky. "Tomorrow's the reaping," Primrose had said nervously. "You better get some sleep."
"I'll be asleep in a few minutes, duckling." Katniss replied, her face blank of any emotion. Primrose had crawled in to her bed and fell asleep, but even after hours, Katniss still stood by her window, watching for any sign of life.
I'll send a sign that we've destroy the Capitol. Ended the games, Harry Potter had told her before she left Hogwarts. I swear on Merlin's shaggy left ankle.
Katniss had watched for anything- everything- looking for the sign her fellow wizard had promised. None had came.
"Katniss?" Primrose's meek voice said from her bed.
"Go to sleep, Prim." Katniss replied, turning to face her younger sister.
"What if I get picked again?" Primrose said, tear tracks glistening on her face. "You can't volunteer as Tribute again..."
"No," Katniss sighed. "You won't get picked."
She walked over to Primrose and patted her head. "Go to sleep, duckling." She said softly, leading Primrose over to her bed.
She laid the younger girl on the sheets and hummed a lullaby. "Katniss?" Primrose whispered in to the darkness.
"Hm?"
"Look," Primrose said, pointing out of the window.
Katniss turned to look, and she saw something that made her heart stop for a few seconds. A mockingjay. No- a patronus mockingjay.
It was a bright blue mockingjay, flying around the night sky, bathing the whole district in blue light. It was a glimmer of hope for everyone.
"The games," Katniss whispered. "It's over. They killed Snow. It's all over."
The girl looked down at Primrose, who looked utterly confused. "Why is there a blue mockingjay outside?" Primrose asked.
"It's freedom, Prim," Katniss smiled. "Freedom." She repeated, the word sounding so beautiful.
A mockingjay patronus, made by Harry Potter himself, sent to District 12 as a reminder of freedom. As hope. As a symbol of unity.
It was the end of an era, but the start of one thing- an era.
