Author's Note: Angel Beats! earned its place in my top ten animes of all time. It is a triumph of beauty, and truth, and... whatever. I wrote a story about it. Hope you enjoy.

His life was stolen away from him, but that was no great matter. Another replaced it. One where he learned the value of living in the present, grasping at every opportunity with strength gained from ambition. He had been the first to see Kanade for who she truly was, and the last.
He alone stood on that concrete walkway as evening fell, a starry blanket slowed by the wind. Otonashi, in all of his finite wisdom, finally came to a groundbreaking realization. The universe was, indeed, fair. As the wind grew to a tempest and his vision began to blur, fade to black, fizzle, he felt at peace. Peace knowing that another day gave itself especially to him. Peace knowing that, though the memories might vanish, the warmth in his heart never would.
He is at peace, knowing that, somewhere in the spectral beyond, there's a principal without his office. And waiting for him are old friends to meet for the very first time.
