She didn't know what happened until it did. Didn't know that when the moon turned full, she'd tear around like a wild animal wanting to bite people. Maia never guessed she would end up in New York City, a different part of town. She found Luke and life settled out.

The pack was her life and that was all fine, until Jace showed up. Blonde and bright, he had that cocky half-grin that announced him as a badass before he could say it himself. She supposed it wasn't his fault she hated him on site. It wasn't the boy's fault she had a loser family. A bad ex. A scary brother.

Maia keeps reminding herself he's dead. Jordan's gone. She's safe.

Then she meets Clary and Simon and why can't she have a happy ending? Valentine captures her and kills Simon. She can feel the nightmares coming like the threat of a coming storm, and she fights to stay awake.

There's a cold on the old steel ship that chills her to the bone. Clary comes to save the day, and her presence warms Maia like Simon's hand did just hours before. Maybe this is when she decides that Clary is special. Maybe this is when she decides that there are miracles after all, because Clary isn't Jace, but you don't have to be a man to save the day.

Simon saves her.

If she hadn't met him, she might believe she'd be dead by now. Simon got her out of that old police station. He got her out of trouble, into a world with danger and fights and fear and friends. Maybe nothing can kill him. Even Valentine can't. Maybe it's this that makes her trust him. Maybe this is him that saves her.

And after the War, Simon finds her Jordan.
