AN: Here is a short Simonette drabble.
Disclaimer: I own nothing.
The sound of crunching leaves stood out amongst all of the other sounds one would expect to hear at this late winter hour. It was that time of day where most people were settling into their houses, content to escape from the upcoming night.
But nonetheless, two sets of warm winter boots treaded through the woods that evening, their owners' gloved hands clasped tightly together.
In all honestly, it wasn't cold enough for such attire. In California it was merely chilly at this time of year.
But the duo had no idea how long they'd be out here, so they came prepared. They were both always prepared for anything and everything. They brought extra shoes, just in case it got too warm for their boots. They wore short sleeves under their thick coats, just in case they grew too hot.
Some might find it odd to go out and have a picnic as the sun was setting, but Simon and Jeanette didn't. They found the sunset fascinating. They could spend hours discussing its beauty and the science behind it. They could spend an eternity citing and quoting dozens of pieces of literature and how the author of such pieces had described the sun's descent into the night.
They could spend forever pointing out all the different colors, tints, and shades that appeared, accurately describing the name of every single one.
They had done this several times before. Each and every time at least one of them had complained about the glare on their glasses, but each and every time they stayed long after the sun had disappeared.
Each and every time their meal went unfinished, as they were far too distracted by the sun and one another to pay attention to it.
Sometimes they would wonder if anyone questioned why they did this every night. They both assumed their siblings thought they did it because sunsets were romantic. Every time they thought this both of them would chuckle to themselves.
Most people found sunsets romantic for a different reason than they did, but that was okay.
The majority of people found the setting of the sun romantic because they were programmed to think so. The low light combined with being alone together triggered an emotional response in most people.
But for Simon and Jeanette, it was that and many other things put together. It was the fact that it was something they could study. It was the fact that, no matter how many sunsets they watched, every single one was different, and that was fascinating. It was the fact that, out here, they could talk about anything they wanted, with the sun as their only listener.
