Chapter Five: Illinois, Ohio, and Michigan

"Damn you! Stupid jigsaw puzzle!" Ohio cried and threw down the puzzle pieces he had in his hands. "What's the point of these things anyway? They just take forever and waste time."

"Oh, poor baby can't finish a jigsaw puzzle." Michigan said with a fake sad voice and then laughed. "It's just a puzzle dude. You've been working on the same one for like, three years now."

Ohio grit his teeth and sneered at Michigan. "Whatever." he replied and started to put the pieces of the puzzle back in the box. Illinois was standing over Ohio with a puzzled look on his face.

"What is the puzzle anyway? A tiger?" he asked and tilted his head to the side slightly. Ohio didn't reply and put the cover carefully on the box and slid it to the other side of the table with a heavy sigh. Illinois grabbed the box, then nodded his head. "Yup. It's a tiger."

"Good job! Illinois knows his animals!" Michigan exclaimed and sarcastically clapped. Illinois glared at his younger sister and put the jigsaw puzzle box down on the table.

"Hey, let's tone it down Aubrey." I warned from across the kitchen. Michigan laughed and waved her hand around.

"Come on Dad, I was only teasing." she protested and put an arm around Illinois and Ohio. "You know I love these guys." Ohio looked furious, and tried to squirm out of his sister's grip. Illinois just looked confused, then shrugged.

When Michigan released Ohio and Illinois from their 'hug', Ohio was breathing hard and glaring at Michigan. "Don't do that ever again." he said and walked off muttering something under his breath. I shook my head and took a sip of my coffee. Illinois and Michigan stared after their brother, then Michigan laughed.

"He's really pissy today. He's probably extra pissed because he rage quit on his stupid tiger puzzle." Michigan said. Illinois agreed, then took his phone out of his pocket. He swore under his breath when he saw who was calling, then answered it.

"Yeah?" he said harshly as he retreated into the living room. Michigan and I simultaneously glanced at each other and grinned.

"Eavesdrop?" she offered.

"Uh, yeah." I agreed and set my coffee mug down (Delaware gave me a #1 Dad coffee mug for my birthday) then we snuck over to the living room and pretended to talk while we listened to Illinois's conversation.

"Hey, don't talk to me that way, this is your problem, not mine!" Illinois snarled over the phone as he paced back and forth. He paused for a second, his eyebrows still furrowed. "This isn't my problem. You're. The. Governor." He said really slow, then he growled something else into the phone and hung up. When he turned around and saw us, he glared. "Were you guys eavesdropping on me?" he asked.

"Pffft. No." I said and laughed. "We were having a lovely chat about watermelons. Until you so rudely interrupted us."

"No you weren't. You weren't even talking!" Illinois protested.

"We were having a telepathic conversation." Michigan replied.

"That's impossible."

"How do you know? You're just not special enough. I mean, look at Magneto. He can do all that telepathic shit." I pointed out.

Illinois sighed and face palmed. "Dad, Magneto isn't real."

"LIES."

Ohio was sitting on the couch, eating a corn out of a can and watching a movie about sharks getting sucked up into a tornado. I think it was called Sharknado, I don't know. It looked kind of cool though. "Yo." I greeted and sat down next to Ohio. He grunted a hello and scooped another spoonful of corn into his mouth, his eyes never leaving the TV screen. "Good movie?" I asked. He shrugged in reply.

"Why are you eating corn out of a can?" I asked.

"Because I want to." he replied with a mouthful of corn. I decided not to reply then just watched this sad, sad production that the Syfy channel calls a movie. "Do you want the rest?" Ohio asked and held out the half-empty corn can to me.

"No, thanks." I said. He shrugged then set the can down on the coffee table, then leaned back into the couch. Soon enough, I heard snoring. The damn kid fell asleep, and didn't even finish the movie. I sighed and turned off the TV, then shut off the light. "Good night." I said to Ohio, then climbed up the stairs to go sleep.
