Naruto: "The Aura Shinobi"

Chapter 7

"Fire and Water, Goodbye Viridian!"

O-O-O

Last Time on Naruto: "The Aura Shinobi"

Gary smirked, taking a few steps back as he readied his Poké Ball for tossing, "I've been waiting for this day, for years."

O-O-O

Gary felt him-self sweat lightly when he felt the people's stares. Maybe proclaiming his challenge to his rival, Naruto, was not a good idea. He wasn't one to hide from a crowd, he relished the attention sometimes, but it was the fact he may end up humiliated by defeat.

If there was one thing that Gary would label him-self as, if he were truly honest, it would be that he was sometimes overconfident, bordering close to arrogance. Of course, he'd never admit it.

Whenever there was a matter that concerned Naruto, he knew that he sometimes – though others would say nearly all the time – would bite more than he could chew, figuratively speaking. As Gary ignored the feverish whisperings of the crowd he had unintentionally drew in, he kept his focus on his self-proclaimed rival.

Throughout the years knowing the elder Ketchum brother, Gary had seen how Naruto had grown under the guide of the world renowned Professor Samuel Oak. Of course, being his grandson and everything, Gary was taught by the Professor as well. But Naruto went beyond what was normally done under an apprenticeship, earning him-self the status of the Professor's Unofficial Assistant.

Naruto had helped around the laboratory, helped with the paperwork, and helped to care for all the Pokémon at the Ranch, when it was clear that it looked too dangerous for someone so young to be near some of the nastier, or larger, Pokémon held there. In truth, Gary knew that Naruto had helped and done more than he him-self had ever done for his own grandfather.

That was why Gary had chosen Naruto as his rival. He believed that if he could finally beat Naruto in something, he'd know for sure that he was truly a gifted Pokémon expert. Thus, he chose the path of a Pokémon Trainer, mainly because it was how his grandfather began his own journey. Of course, he had already beaten Naruto in the Trainer's Exam, but Gary decided that it didn't count in real life.

"I've waited a long time for this, Naruto." Gary stated, a grin across his face as he fingered his first Pokémon's Poké Ball.

When Gary had gone to pick his first Pokémon, out of the three that were usually given to beginning trainers, he had chosen Squirtle, a Water Type Pokémon. He had chosen Squirtle, mostly due to how it had a type advantage over Fire Type Pokémon, like Kurama.

'I just hope I chose right…' Gary thought warily, nervously glancing down at the mad-grinning Vulpix.

Tilting his head, "Is that so," Naruto spoke out, regaining Gary's attention back onto him. He grinned as he looked down at his equally grinning partner, "Alright then, Kurama, let's do this!"

"About bloody time…" Kurama grumbled, but excitedly, as he moved into position. The last few days of fighting nothing but weaklings – which he also counted Team Rocket as – he was itching for a good fight, one he hoped Gary's Pokémon would provide.

Seeing the uniquely coloured Vulpix walking out further onto the field, Gary took the Poké Ball he'd been fingering and enlarged it. "Let's win this…" He reared his arm back, and tossed the Ball up into the air, "… Squirtle, I choose you!"

As the Poké Ball reached its apex, it opened to release the Pokémon within. In a flash of white, the Pokémon made its appearance on the field. Naruto's first thought, upon seeing the Pokémon known as Squirtle, was that it was a rather cute looking Pokémon. Something he'd never think Gary would ever pick as his starter. In all honesty, he had thought Gary would have chosen Charmander.

"Squirtle, Squirt!" Clearly male, the small Pokémon called out while making a slight pose upon his entry onto the field.

Kurama sweat-dropped at that, having a slight flashback of someone else he had seen that went for the dramatic entrances as well.

Staring blankly at the showmanship Squirtle performed, Naruto simply took out his Pokédex to scan this new entry. Even though he already knew about the Squirtle species, he was simply scanning so it would register into his Pokédex for later reference.

[Ding]… [Squirtle, the Tiny Turtle Pokémon. After birth, its back swells and hardens into a shell. The shell itself is not merely used for protection, as its rounded shape and grooves on its surface helps minimize resistance in water, enabling this Pokémon to swim at high speeds.]

Naruto raised a brow at that, not having known that the shell enabled that, and was impressed by that little titbit of information. Seemed he still had some things to learn.

"I see you went with a Squirtle." Pocketing the Pokédex away, Naruto looked up to see Gary's still grinning face. The boy clearly thought he had the battle in the bag, so to speak. "Never took you for the cute and cuddly Pokémon, Gary." Naruto taunted as he smirked, seeing that he struck a nerve as Gary's grin faltered, and an eyebrow of his twitched in annoyance.

"Keep laughing, Naruto…" Gary muttered, clearly upset about that comment, before the grin came back at full force, "But we'll see who has the last laugh after this. This battle is ours!"

"Yeah, yeah…" It was Naruto's turn to mutter.

He knew Gary was always competitive, but it sometimes took the fun out of things. Looking around, he tried spotting a referee for this battle to be semi-official. He quickly spotted someone, clearly a Veteran Trainer given the man's age. He made his way towards the surprised man.

Few minutes of talking later, and the Veteran Trainer agreed to be the referee for the match.

Standing at opposite ends of each other, the two trainers, and their Pokémon companions, waited for the match to begin. The man chosen to help referee the match raised his arms, as he spoke out loud and clear.

[Pokémon Battle: Naruto V Gary – One on One Battle]

[Veteran Trainer/Referee] "This is a one-on-one match. First one to have their Pokémon knocked out, or are unable to continue battling, will count as defeat. Match start!"

[Gary] "Use Bubble, and don't stop!"

[Naruto] "Quick Attack, get in close, Kurama!"

Taking an intake of air, Squirtle opened his mouth and exhaled, sending a large stream of foams and bubbles towards the smirking Vulpix. Before it could get close, Kurama blurred out of the way.

Not letting up, Squirtle kept attacking in hopes of striking the surprisingly fast Vulpix, but each time it got close, Kurama would swerve or stride just out of the way, easily evading them without trouble.

[Gary] "Tail Whip, knock him away! Then use Tackle!"

Stopping his assault, Squirtle quickly spun around, and struck Kurama with his tail. A look of pure surprise was on the fox as he was sent back a few feet onto his back. The move working in not only giving Squirtle some space, but also lowering Kurama's Defence, making him more susceptible to Physical Attacks.

[Naruto] "Use the momentum and jump!"

Just as Squirtle made his move and charged towards his opponent, Kurama had flipped and hopped into the air, evading the Pokémon easily. Even when getting struck with a surprising move like that to the face, and just narrowly evading a follow-up move, Kurama hadn't lost his smirk.

[Gary] "Don't let up, follow him and use Bubble again!"

[Naruto] "Show them how it's done, strike with Ember."

Ignoring the snickering of the crowd, Kurama prepared his move. He trusted Naruto, and knew he wouldn't lead him astray. As both Pokémon launched their respective abilities, they collided with one another, causing a small explosion to occur and kicking up dust.

[Naruto] "This should work. Alright, Kurama, Fire Spin! Aim it for where Squirtle was!"

From Squirtle's perspective, all he saw was the smoke cloud parting from the centre, as a torrent of spinning flames of orange and red came barrelling through it, heading straight for the now worried Tiny Turtle Pokémon. Despite being resistant to Fire based attacks, a direct hit from something as large as that was going to hurt.

[Gary] "Withdraw now!"

Reacting quickly, Squirtle hopped into the air, turning so that his hard back shell was facing towards the incoming flames. In position, Squirtle had all his limbs withdraw into his shell, protecting them.

As the fires of Kurama engulfed Squirtle, it struck the ground before erupting upwards in a spiral of flames, entrapping the small Water Pokémon inside. Even from a distance, everyone could feel the intense heat the flames gave off.

[Naruto] "Don't let up, Kurama! Quick Attack once more, and head straight into the fire!"

Kurama's body blurred once again, leaving a trail of white streak behind him. Racing into the fires it had created, Kurama's fur glowed softly as it absorbed the flames. Despite being visually impaired within the flaming tempest, Kurama struck the immobile shell of Squirtle, knocking the burnt shell out of the twisting flames, and having it crash down towards Gary.

As the flames of the Fire Spin died down, Kurama came to a stop where it struck his opponent. The shell of Squirtle wobbled a little, making the Fox Pokémon prepare for another round. A few more seconds of wobbling later, and Squirtle's limbs popped out from the shell, each one showing signs of being burnt, but not too severe. Squirtle didn't get up, and was clearly unconscious.

[Veteran Trainer/Referee] "Squirtle is unable to battle. Due to knock-out, the winner of the match is Naruto of Pallet Town!"

[End Pokémon Battle: Naruto Ketchum – Victory!]

With a sigh, Gary returned his Squirtle back to his Poké Ball, before clipping it onto his belt. Even though he had lost, he felt good. It was a good match, and showed just how much more he could improve on with his Pokémon's training, and as a Trainer him-self.

"Nice match," Naruto praised honestly, a smile on his face as he came up towards Gary, "Could have used more brains and some forethought, but over-all, it was fun." Patting Gary on the back, he didn't even react as Kurama ran up his leg to plop right on his favourite spot, "I could already tell that your Squirtle had some training even before you challenged me, didn't he?"

Blinking owlishly, Gary took a few seconds for his brain to come up with something to say, but came up with nothing. Shaking his head with a chuckle, he knocked Naruto's hand away, "Thanks for that, but I should have realised you were still ahead of me. I only had a few hours to work with Squirtle."

Raising a brow, Naruto smirked, "Finally remembered I had Kurama for years?" He watched as Gary's cheeks reddened a little, and busted out laughing, "That's rich coming from a supposed genius, isn't it Mister Oak?" He teased.

"Oh shut up," Gary muttered, looking the other way.

Gary may have claimed he was a genius every once in a while – if you could believe that – but he didn't need reminding of that, especially after he just lost a match, his first match at that.

"Okay, okay, joking over," Naruto calmed down, stepping back with his hands up in surrender, "Still a good match though, Gary. It was a nice change of pace from my other battles so far."

Raising a brow in question, Gary just shook his head, "I should have known you battled already." He muttered. Smirking as he jabbed a finger towards Naruto, "But remember this, my rival, I shall beat you yet!" Gary promised, before turning around and walking away, "Just you wait, Naruto. I will win one of these days, so be prepared!"

Naruto just chuckled at Gary's enthusiasm. He wasn't as thrilled for when Gary proclaimed him as his rival, especially without considering his own opinion on the matter, but he wasn't against it either. A little competition was a good way to stay sharp, both physically and mentally.

Plus Kurama certainly seemed to have enjoyed him-self, given the large fanged grin he was sporting right now. Sometimes Naruto worried about Kurama, but then remembered exactly who he was.

Seeing that Gary was no gone from sight, Naruto looked to his shoulder. "So, Kurama…" Getting the Vulpix's attention, Naruto grinned at him, "Did you enjoy yourself there?"

Kurama snorted, a burst of flames escaping his nostrils as he did so, but he nodded anyways with the grin not even leaving his face. He had finally had a real fight, with a somewhat intelligent fighter. He just hoped that Gary's Squirtle will be a better match next time, as he couldn't wait to beat the Tiny Turtle Pokémon once again.

Naruto shook his head at his partner's answer. He always knew his long-time friend had a sadistic side to him, but when viewing a battle – or participating in one, as he did so recently – that level of sadistic nature seemed to grow a tad bit more.

Sometimes he even wondered what it would be like if Kurama, small as he is, tried to go up against one of the larger, and sturdier Pokémon. Would he quit, or keep on going till one of them was on the ground and knocked out. It was tough to say, but he was betting on the later.

"Thought so…" Naruto muttered, before looking at his partner again, "I think it's time for us to go, wouldn't you say, Kurama?" Not waiting for a response, Naruto turned opposite of where Gary went, and headed for the City's limit.

Unlike Gary, who Naruto knew went towards the path that was designed for vehicle use – since Gary did leave Pallet Town in a car – Naruto headed for the path that was naturally used by travellers who went by foot.

As he walked, a throbbing in his head reached a peak, causing Naruto to stumble a little. 'Okay, that hurt…' Naruto winced, reaching a hand up to rub his forehead.

Closing his eyes, Naruto practiced the breathing exercises his Self-Defence teacher had taught him. It always seemed to work in calming the pain down, while also invigorating him somewhat. When the pain subsided, Naruto opened his eyes and continued walking.

He was unaware that he was being watched closely.

Kurama watched Naruto from the corner of his eyes. Seemingly found what he was looking for, he turned back to watch the path Naruto was taking. A small smile came upon his muzzle, 'He's almost there…'

Gary wiggled the finger he had in his ear, trying to stop the ringing he was hearing. He had done the mistake of telling his fan-girls of the loss he experienced in his match against Naruto. Some had even wailed something about "Having cheated". He was tempted to show them his Squirtle, just to shut them up, but knew his Pokémon needed his rest.

Having left his proclaimed rival, Gary had made his way to where he knew the girls had been waiting for his return. It was there that Gary made the mistake of telling them why he had asked them to go on ahead, which led to him to further explaining what happened back in Viridian, and ultimately ended with his loss to Naruto and his sadistic Vulpix, Kurama.

To put it frankly, he wished he hadn't. A loss was a loss, and he could accept that. But the girls had gotten in their heads that Naruto had cheated, believing that the "nasty" Fox Pokémon couldn't have beaten his "cute" and "adorable" Squirtle. He couldn't wait for the day Squirtle finally evolved to his final evolution, just to get out of that cute-phase that seemed to entrap females so easily.

Girls were strange, and Gary could not understand them quite yet, if at all.

Sighing quietly to him-self, Gary had moved away from the gossiping and plotting girls. He had a call to make, and he needed some semblance of quiet to speak and hear properly.

Scrolling through the contacts, he found the number he was searching for. Pressing the [Call] button, he placed the cell phone against his now free-ringing ear, and waited…

[Brrr-Brrr…]

[Brrr-Brrr… Click…!] "Hello, this is Professor Oak speaking."

"Hey Gramps," Samuel's grandson replied back. With a glance towards his cheerleaders, he relaxed when he noticed they weren't looking or listening in. Looking away, "You told me to call you in, after meeting up with Naruto."

"Oh! Gary, glad you called. So, tell me, how is Naruto? I wasn't able to properly speak to him, and he hasn't called in today. He said he needed to speak with me before, but I haven't received a call from his as of yet." Samuel explained over the phone, his voice holding a tone of concern.

Gary sighed out loudly, rubbing his forehead a little with his free hand, "I can understand that. For some reason, Viridian City's telephone lines are down, so that's probably why he hasn't called you yet." He explained to his grandfather.

"Ah, I see. That would explain it then." Grumbling could be heard over the line, "That's most likely the reason why Delia hasn't been able to contact the Viridian Pokémon Centre either. She wanted to get in touch with her sons before they left. Too late now, I guess…" He mused.

Gary nodded, before mentally slapping him-self. He was using a cell phone. "Yeah, they're already leaving Viridian." He confirmed, "I hadn't seen Ash around, but I did cross with Naruto. Challenged him to a Pokémon battle, lost too…" Gary admitted, eye twitching when his grandfather's boisterous laughter echoed loudly over the line.

"What did I tell you? That boy, full of surprises he is."Calming down a little, Samuel's voice took on a more serious tone, "So what can you tell me about Naruto's condition?"

Gary winced a little at the question.

He, like his grandfather and a select few others, all knew of Naruto's strange migraines. They weren't sure what was causing it, until Samuel had asked one of his old Pokémon partners, who had stayed with him after he had retired as a trainer, to take a look inside Naruto's mind while the blonde slept one evening at the Ranch.

The Pokémon the Professor had asked for help was a powerful Psychic Type Pokémon, one of the few that also possessed the ability of speaking to others through the mind. In the end, whatever that Pokémon had found inside Naruto's mind, it had confided with its trainer, and only its trainer.

Even to this day, nobody knew what that Pokémon had found, and Samuel Oak at kept it in silence in request to his trusted Pokémon. He hadn't told anyone, not even to the boy's mother, Delia. But he had assured Delia, that the cause of Naruto's pain wasn't anything dangerous or severe, and that it should pass as the boy got older.

That had been said several years ago now, and Naruto was still experiencing them.

Gary rubbed the back of his head, walking in a circle, "He's hiding it well, but it seems to be getting more frequent. I saw his eye twitching a couple of times during our battle." He explained, "I wasn't sure whether that was because of our battle or because of his migraine though."

A sigh was heard over the line. "I see, so it's nearly broken…" Samuel hummed thoughtfully.

Gary frowned. Though his grandfather had spoken softly, almost likely to him-self, Gary still heard the words spoken clearly, "Gramps, what's going on with Naruto?"

It was silent over the line for a few seconds, "… nothing that needs you to be concerned about, just forget about it for now. Be sure to give me a call once you hit the next town. You know how much I enjoy your calls. Hope to hear from you soon-"

"W-wait, Gramps…!"

[Click… Beep, Beep, Beep]

"Damnit…" Gary cursed, looking at his cell phone as the line was disconnected. Putting the now silent device back into his pockets, Gary stood there with a confused frown.

Something was going on, something concerning Naruto's migraines and constant headaches. He wasn't sure what, but for a Psychic Type to get involved, and later for his grandfather to remain silent about it. Gary just couldn't understand what was going on.

With a huff, the grandson of Samuel Oak turned and headed back to the car. 'I will find out what's going on, Gramps. That's a promise…' He vowed to him-self.

O-O-O -Break- O-O-O

Location – Pallet Town, Professor Samuel Oak's Research Lab

Back at the peaceful settlement of Pallet Town, Professor Oak was staring at the telephone in his hand. The elder Professor hummed as he thought over his grandson's words in regards to Naruto.

{It is finally happening, the day when it is unleashed, yes?} A monotonous, male voice spoke out.

Placing the phone back where it belonged, Samuel turned his head, looking at the one that had just spoken to him through his mind. Floating there was one of the few Pokémon that had chosen to stay with him after his retirement from his trainer days, and into the Professor life.

Floating into the room, cross-legged in the air, was an Alakazam, the Psi Pokémon, a Psychic Type Pokémon, and the final evolution of the Abra Pokémon line.

He also happened to be the Pokémon which delved within Naruto's mind many years ago, upon the request of Samuel Oak, his retired trainer and Master.

Samuel leaned back onto his chair, and seeming to age just a little bit more. "Yes, it is," The elder human grumbled in worry. As his Pokémon floated closer, he looked at it with tired eyes, "But I can't help but worry for the lad, and the son of an old friend."

Alakazam tilted his head, {… you worry for the child's mother?}

"Wouldn't you?" Samuel retorted, before seeing the look Alakazam was giving him. He groaned before closing his eyes, rubbing them with his hand, "What would you have me say to a mother of two, that one of her children may change dramatically due to the actions of a Pokémon God?"

{I would say that such an action and result would be an honour, especially when it involves the great Honourable Father.} Alakazam calmly gave his former Master a pointed look, {It has also been many centuries since any of us lower species have heard, or seen, the Honourable Father being involved in anything in the Mortal Plane.} He explained, with his monotone tone unchanging.

Samuel snorted a little on the disbelieving side, "Right…" He was a man of science, and despite the research he had done on the occasional legendary Pokémon, none of them compared to a Pokémon like Arceus. He even had to contact the Sinnoh Region just to clarify Arceus existence!

He was somewhat disbelieving on that, but couldn't rebuff on the claim when his own Pokémon had explained exactly what he had found in Naruto's head.

The cause of Naruto's migraines and headaches was a literal mental time capsule, one in which according to his Alakazam was created by the God of Pokémon, Arceus. Though Alakazam wasn't completely sure, the Pokémon was almost positive that this "time capsule" inside Naruto's mind contained a secondary conscious within it.

The only theory Professor Oak had come up with in regards to something like that, was the Past Life Theory. When he had voiced that idea, he was somewhat astonished and a little worried when his Alakazam had agreed, saying that the second conscious indeed felt like Naruto's.

Alakazam had also explained how the mental time capsule seemed to be deteriorating slowly, and estimated that it would be "unleashed" somewhere in the boy's thirteenth year of life.

When Professor Oak wanted to announce this discovery, especially to the worried boy's mother, he was stopped by his Alakazam. He was warned that any action done by the "Honourable Father" had to be kept a secret, until such an action and result came into fruition.

Several debates later, and the elder Oak had to agree to keep it a secret until then. Now the coming day was approaching, and Professor Samuel Oak was a nervous wreck.

{Everything will be alright, Master. The will and actions of the Honourable Father, is firm yet gentle, so nothing negative or harmful will come of this.} Alakazam tried soothing his ex-Trainer's nerves.

Samuel just grumbled, but decided to do something to take his mind off the situation. As he turned to sit properly at his desk, he resumed his paperwork. Several seconds passed by, before he glanced at his floating Pokémon partner, "It's not the will or actions of Arceus I'm worried about."

Alakazam raised a non-existent eyebrow in question, prompting his former Master to continue.

Turning back to his work, "It's the wrath of a worried mother, which scares me." Shuddering a little, as the image of an enraged Delia passed through Samuel Oak's mind. He quickly resumed his work, ignoring the snickering that came from his old Pokémon partner.

O-O-O -Break- O-O-O

Location – Route 2, several miles away from Viridian City

Time-skip

'Someone's popular today…' Kurama mused amusingly, ears twitching as he heard Naruto sneezing.

It has been nearly an hour now since they had left Viridian City. With the city now in the far distance, the group of three – Eevee included – now found themselves within the lush wilderness that existed between the large industrial city of Viridian, and the even larger forest of Viridian Forest.

Kurama hummed a tune in his head, watching the area around them for wild Pokémon, his attention briefly going towards the happily skipping Eevee, who Naruto had let out once they stepped outside of Viridian City. The little Pokémon was happily skipping across the fields next to the footpath.

Glancing behind him, Kurama watched carefully as Naruto's face was contorted in mild pain, a hand raised against his forehead, rubbing it gently.

Kurama knew what was happening. He was told upon his rebirth, and later on during his early new-life what would happen to Naruto. The headaches at the beginning, as it turned into migraines as the boy got older. They were signs, and with how frequent it was happening, he knew the time was soon.

'But, what happens to him afterwards…' Kurama thought unhappily, focusing his attention back to the sight infront of him, '… is anyone's guess.'

One way or another, Naruto was going to change. He just prayed not too much.

'Naruto Uzumaki…' Kurama hummed, looking up at the skies above, '… or Naruto Ketchum. Which one will you gain? And which one will you lose, after the seal is unlocked?' The skies remained clear, his question unanswered. But sooner or later, it will happen. He just had to wait.

Naruto against Gary, the fight between "rivals" concluded with Gary's defeat. Even with water at his side, Gary lost to Naruto's fire. With Viridian City now behind him, what will Naruto's journey lead him to? And with the discovery Oak had made years ago about his young assistant, how will the inevitable release of the "second conscious" affect the Naruto Ketchum they all know and love?
