Chapter 4

The next morning, Casey woke up to a loud crash of thunder.

Wow, I actually forgot about the rain, Casey thought as she closed her eyes again, hoping to get some more sleep. But that idea was ruined when Lucy jumped on her bed.

"Casey wake up!"

"You're perky in the morning," she responded groggily, sitting up.

"Everyone is waiting in the boys' room to go get breakfast, and then Susan said she has a game for us to play."

Oh God, that game.

"Well, tell them I'll be ready in a minute."

"Now! Now! Now!" Lucy continued, bouncing up and down.

"Alright, alright! I'm up!" Laughing, she sat up and rubbed her eyes. "I just have to get dresses and brush my hair. I'll be in there soon." Lucy smiled and skipped into the next room. Casey couldn't help but chuckle at the little girl.

She picked out an outfit and, after she was dressed, went to the vanity to brush her hair. As she was fixing her hair into a high ponytail, she tried not to think about what was going to happen that day. What she knew was going to happen. She just had to act dumb and pretend she had no idea what was going on.

"Jeez you're slow," a voice came from behind her. She jumped and turned, and saw it was Caleb.

"Well sorry, but I actually care about my looks," she said to him. The bag that she had "brought" with her had some makeup in it, so she decided to put a little on.

"You know you don't have to do that. You're already beautiful.
"I want to make a good impression and show that I care about myself."

"You don't have to try try try, try try try. You don't have to try," Caleb sang to her.

Casey laughed, "You're a dork." With a finishing touch of blush, she stood up and the two walked into the boys' room.

"About time," Edmund muttered under his breath. His older siblings just rolled their eyes and the group walked out to breakfast.

They still didn't know each other that well, so breakfast was quiet with the occasional conversation. The two that talked to each other the most was Casey and Peter, and when they weren't talking, they would steal quick glances at the other when they thought the other wasn't looking. Caleb noticed and lightly kicked his friend underneath the table and gave her a knowing glance. She just blushed and rolled her eyes, not looking at Peter again.

When they were done, they all gathered in the common room to play Susan's "fun" game she had invented. Susan was on the couch with a large dictionary on her lap. Peter was in a chair while Edmund was underneath another one, tinkering with it. Lucy was at the windowsill watching the rain; and Casey and Caleb were sitting on the floor.

"Gastrovascular," Susan read, aiming the word at Peter. When he didn't answer, she repeated, "Come on Peter. Gastrovascular."

Peter sighed and guessed, "Is it Latin?"
"Yes."

"Is it Latin for 'worst game ever invented'?" Edmund teasingly asked, causing Susan to shut the book.

"We could play hide and seek," Lucy suggested, coming over to the group.

"But we're already having so much fun," Peter sarcastically replied.

"Come on Peter please! Casey did promise we would play."
"That's true, I did promise," Casey stated.

Peter looked at her, back to his sister and started, "1, 2, 3, 4..." Lucy grinned widely and took off. Edmund tried to complain, but gave in, and he and Susan went to find places to hide. Caleb and Casey also got up and left Peter to his counting. The two decided to hide behind some large drapes.

While they hid, Caleb whispered, "You know what's coming next right?"
"Lucy should be calling out in 3, 2, 1, and..."

"It's alright, I'm back! I'm alright!" they heard the youngest Pevensie call out, right on cue. They knew what to do.

"After you," Caleb gestured, and the two went to find the others.

They arrived in time to hear Susan say, "Does this mean I win?"
"I don't think Lucy wants to play anymore," Peter said.

"What's going on?" Casey asked.

"Did Peter find you?" Caleb followed.

Lucy got an odd look on her face. "I've been gone for hours." The three siblings all exchanged looks. "Come on, I'll show you!" She started running, and the others had no choice but to follow her. They arrived at a room with nothing in it but a large wardrobe. Lucy explained how she had gone in the wardrobe to hide, and had walked into a snowy forest where she met a faun named Mr. Tumnus. "If you don't believe me, look for yourself."

Susan opened the wardrobe to look, but found nothing but some coats. To be sure, she knocked on the back.

"Lucy, the only wood in here is the back of the wardrobe," she told her.

"One game at a time Lu," Peter said. "We don't all have your imagination." The three started out of the room, Casey and Caleb hanging back.

"But I wasn't imagining!" Lucy stopped them.

They turned back. "That's enough Lucy," Susan spoke plainly.

"I wouldn't lie about this."

"Well I believe her," Edmund spoke up. Casey closed her eyes and sighed. She hated what was about to come next.

"You do?"

"Of course. Didn't I tell you about the football field inside the bathroom cupboard?" He smiled a smug smile.

"Now would you just stop," Peter came forward. "You just have to make everything worse, don't you?"
"It was just a joke."

"When are you going to grow up?"
Edmund got in Peter's face and shouted, "Shut up! You think you're dad but you're not!" and stormed out.

Susan watched him go, then said to Peter coldly, "Well that was nicely handled." And followed after her brother.

"It really was there," Lucy said again, on the verge of crying.

"Susan's right Lucy. That's enough." He looked to the other two. "Are you two coming?"
"You go on ahead, we'll meet up," Casey told him. He nodded and left. She knelt in front of Lucy, who now had tears rolling down her face, and hugged her.

"Why don't they believe me? I never lie about anything," Lucy said between sniffles.

"They're just trying to be grown up. I don't think they believe n magic," Caleb comforted her.

Lucy pulled back from Casey and asked, "Do you believe me?"
Casey took a minute to think about her answer. "Caleb and I believe in more than what can just be seen."

"I just hope they're not too mad at me."

"I don't think they're mad. They're just...confused."

"Give them time, and it'll be like nothing ever happened," Caleb went on.

And that it did. No one mentioned the snowy forest for the rest of the day. But that night, things started up again.

In the middle of the night, when everyone was sleeping (almost everyone), Susan and Casey woke up to yelling in the room next to them. They quickly glanced at each other and rushed to see what was going on.

"What are you talking about Lucy?" they heard Peter groggily ask his little sister who was shaking him awake. Edmund was just standing by the door.

"Narnia! It's all in the wardrobe, like I told you!" Lucy kept shouting.

"You've just been dreaming Lucy," Susan stated.

"But I haven't! I saw mr. Tumnus again. And this time, Edmund went to." Now all eyes were on the youngest boy.

"You saw the faun?" Peter asked. Edmund just shook his head.

"Well, he didn't exactly go there with me. He...What were you doing Edmund?"
"I was just playing along," he said. Casey grit her teeth, wanting desperately to yell at him and call him a liar; but that would give too much away. She looked at Lucy and saw how heartbroken she was.. "I'm sorry Pete. I shouldn't have encouraged her. But you know what little children are like these days. They just don't know when to stop pretending."

Now in tears, Lucy ran out of the room. Susan and Peter chased after her, Peter knocking Edmund onto the bed on his way out.

"How could you do that?" Casey spat out, not able to hold it back anymore.

"Case," Caleb tried to calm her, but she stopped him.

"How could you just sit there and say it's not true when you know for certain it is?!"
"You can't talk to me like that!" Edmund yelled back. "You're not my sister! You can't tell me what to do!"
"You should already know what to do! Lucy is your sister, you shouldn't put her down like that. She's just a little girl!"
"And who are you? Just some American who doesn't belong here! Neither of you belong here! I wish you both would just go away and leave me alone!"
"Well, your wish is granted." Casey grabbed Caleb's arm and walked out.

Caleb crashed in Casey's bed that night.

The next few days went by as peacefully as they could. No one spoke of Narnia, but tension was high between Casey and Edmund. She felt ridiculous being in a fight with a 12 year old boy, but she just could not stand him. She and Caleb tried, however, not to let it interfere with their relationship with the other Pevensies. Lucy although was spending more time alone, not wanting to talk to her siblings. She would let Casey and Caleb in though.

Casey was becoming good friends with Susan and Peter, but more was starting to develop with Peter. They would often go off alone and a flirtation would often occur. Susan would ask her questions about it, but Casey just kept saying they were only friends.

On one of the days it was nice, the group, excluding Edmund, decided it was time to go outside. Peter, Susan and Edmund set up a game of cricket, while the other three were sitting underneath a tree.

"Peter winds up. Poised to take yet another wicket," Peter called out as he bowled the ball, hitting an oblivious Edmund in the leg.

"Ow!" Edmund exclaimed.

"Whoops," Peter laughed. "Wake up Dolly Daydream."

"Why can't we play hide and seek again?"
"I thought you said it was a kids game."

"Besides, we could all use the fresh air," Susan commented.

"It's not like there isn't air inside," Edmund responded.

"Are you ready?" Peter questioned.

"Are you?" Edmund hit his bat on the ground, ready for Peter to bowl. When he hit the ball, it flew right into one of the mansion's windows. Everyone's mouths dropped open. Before anything was said, they all ran to see what had happened.

When they reached the room the ball had landed in, they saw a broken suit of armor surrounded by shattered.

"Oh well done Ed," Peter said sarcastically.

"You bowled it!"
All of a sudden they heard footsteps and Mrs. Macready saying, "What on earth if going on?"
Quickly, they all booked it out of the room and tried to get away from her. But everywhere they seemed to go, the Macready seemed to be as well. Finally, the last room they went into was the wardrobe room. Edmund ran for it, opening it and gesturing them to follow.

"You've got to be joking," Susan complained.

"Hurry!" Caleb said when he heard the footsteps outside the room. They all piled into the wardrobe, backing up as far as they could. But the back never seemed to come. Soon, it started to feel cold and Peter and Susan fell onto something cold and wet. They turned around and couldn't believe what they saw. Casey and Caleb followed them out, all in awe.

"Impossible," Susan stated.

"Don't worry," Lucy spoke up. "I'm sure it's just your imagination."

"I don't suppose saying we're sorry would quite cover it?" Peter figured.

"No, it wouldn't."

"But I bet I know what would," Casey said, picking up some snow and throwing it at Peter.

"That definitely would!" Lucy laughed. Soon, Lucy and the older kids were in an all out snowball fight.

They were brought back through when someone threw one at Edmund and heard him say, "Ow. Stop it."

Realization sunk in for Peter. "You little liar."

"You didn't believe her either."

"Apologize to Lucy." When he didn't, Peter took a few steps towards him. "Say you're sorry!"
"Alright! I'm sorry."

"That's alright. Some little kids just don't know when to stop pretending, " Lucy said, throwing his own words back at him. He just made a face at her.

"Maybe we should go back," Susan suggested.

"Shouldn't we at least take a look around?" Edmund responded.

"I can't believe I'm saying this, but Edmund's right," Casey said. "It's a whole other world. Aren't you the littlest bit curious?"

"I think Lucy should decide," Peter stated.

"I'd like you all to meet Mr. Tumnus," Lucy announced.

"Then Mr. Tumnus it is."

"But we can't go hiking in the snow, dressed like this," Susan pointed out.

"No, but I'm sure the Professor wouldn't mind us using these." Peter came back out of the wardrobe, armed with a bunch of fur coats. When he handed Casey her's, their hands just brushed against each other. They both immediately turned red, and Peter hurried forward continuing talking. "And if you think about it logically, we're not even taking them out of the wardrobe."

"But that's a girl's coat!" Edmund tried to argue when Peter handed him his coat.

"I know," he responded plainly, shoving the coat at him.

Lucy led the way to Mr. Tumnus's house, telling them all about what they would expect. But when the reached the door, Lucy stopped in her tracks and just stared. The door had been broken open.

"Lu?" Peter tried to talk to her, but she ran forward. "Lucy!" Everyone followed quickly behind her.

When they walked in, the found the place destroyed. Then, Peter noticed a piece of parchment attached to the wall by a knife. He took it down and read, "The Faun Tumnus is hereby charged with high treason against her imperial majesty, Jadis, Queen of Narnia, for comforting her enemies and fraternizing with humans. Signed Maugrim, Captain of the secret police. Long live the Queen!"
"Okay, now we really should go back," Susan said urgently.

"But what about Mr. Tumnus?" Lucy fought back.

"Lucy, it may be out of our hands," Caleb responded.

"if he was arrested just for being with a human, I don't think there's much we can do," Susan went on.

"You don't understand do you?" Lucy continued, "I'm the human. She must've found out he helped me."

"Maybe we could call the police," Peter suggested.

"These are the police," Susan argued.

"Don't worry Lu, we'll think of something."

"Why?" Everyone turned to Edmund. "I mean, he's a criminal." Casey just stuck her tongue in her cheek to keep herself quiet.

"Psst," they heard come from outside. They looked out the window, but all they saw was a bird.

Susan gave an odd look to the others and questioned, "Did that bird just 'psst' us?"
