As soon as she walks up to the counter I immediately get all flustered. This usually happens to me around pretty girls, and take my word for it Caitlin Hawthorn is really pretty. Her hair looks like she intertwined it with gold and her eyes are bluer than anything I've ever seen. My breath gets caught in my throat and I choke on my own spit. I cough, looking away embarrassed. I cough and cough and ... Okay I'm good.

I worry that she's going to start laughing but when I look up, a chuckle escapes my mouth instead of hers. She's literally hovering right over all of the sweets, her eyes quickly skimming over everything so fast I don't even think she knows what's she's looking at. We get reactions like this a lot, but usually from younger kids. Much younger.

She looks up at me through her long eyelashes that are covered with mascara, and now that I realize it, she's wearing a lot of makeup. More than Dani, or Emma and Melanie. "Why is she wearing so much makeup?" I think to myself. "She's beautiful"

"You think I'm beautiful" she says in a giggly way. My eyes widen "did I say that out loud?" I ask astounded by my own stupidity. She nods. "Sorry, that probably came off really rude" I apologize, super embarrassed now.

She just laughs again. Her laugh is awesome. " Can I get you anything?" I say realizing that I'm supposed to be working not talking to pretty girls. She looks around again. I have to admit we have MANY food options. It tends to be overwhelming. "Ummm..." She says unsurely. "What do you recommend?" She asks nervously. She's adorable. "Well, my personal favourite would be our frosted carrot cake, just because we add extra cinnamon and I love cinnamon." I say in a rush.

She smiles. "Me too, I'll have two slices of that and one blonde boy to eat them with please." She says flirtatiously. "Okay, that'll be- uh" I get all flustered again and blush. I clear my throat and try to talk. "Considering its pretty much empty here and my shifts almost over how about we take the cake to go, and go for a walk?" I ask Surprising myself with my own confidence. She smiles and pulls my arm as I go around the counter. I quickly grab my winter jacket and do close the shop as she runs out giddily. I quickly follow completely forgetting about the cakes.

I try to force my hand to stop being clammy and gross but it just won't listen, Caitlin doesn't say anything so I think I'm in the clear, until she pulls her hand out of mine and wipes it on her big blue jacket. She smiles and says" sorry, my hands her a little sweaty" she grasps my hand again and we start walking around aimlessly until I realize she's new here and probably hasn't seen the cliff.

I turn around the other way and pull her along as she laughs at how silly I probably look. I guide her through town square until we get to a small re-built neighbourhood, and as the sidewalk gets more cracked and the houses get smaller and farther spread apart we finally reach the entrance of the cliff. We have to pass through the gate to enter the forest. We pass by the two guards on their posts. And they smile and say there hellos.

Caitlin starts to look nervous as we go deeper into the forest. I stop and say "I'm not going to kill you, where we're going its probably going to be packed" I say truthfully, knowing that the cliff is never vacant, there's always something going on. Caitlin smiles and relaxes a bit. We start talking about Anything and everything. She tells me her favourite colour, which is surprisingly white, like mine. And I tell her what grade I'm in, turns out we're both freshman.

We ask innocent questions like "when's your birthday?" "How do you like district 12?" "Are you single?" That question was 100% Caitlin. After a while we start talking about more serious stuff. I told her about how strong both of my parents are and how I am so proud of them. She told me how much she missed district 2. I asked her what she missed the most and she said "The stores, the food, the festivals we'd have". She smiles a little bit. "What about your friends?" I question. And her face turns dark.

She then goes on to tell me about how her "friends" all back stabbed her and how her boyfriend of 3 weeks cheated on her. Before I have time to say anything she shrugs and says "Not that I care, he was dumb as door nails." She laughs and it's so infectious I can't help but laugh to.

She starts to get excited when she hears the music blasting and she now knows where to go. We walk into the clearing and see a bomb fire already started, even though it's only 4:00. The speakers that have always been here are blasting top 40's music under a canopy.

There's at least 100 people here and I'm about to wonder why when I realize, it's the last day of school and there was bound to be a party here. For as long as I can remember the cliff has been a teen hangout. No one knows who started it or who placed the speakers and picnic tables here but we never asked. It's perfect even in the winter.

The large amount of trees give the clearing enough shade to be protected by snowfall and most rainfall. Even with that someone placed a large. Tent like canopy over the speakers. The only thing any of us teens actually do besides bring the food and music is change the batteries in the speaker and lights that hang above which is only like 5 dollars for whoever is willing to do it.

Caitlin looks ecstatic, which I am happy for. Things got a little bit tense when she talked about her so called friends. I take Caitlin to my favourite part of the cliff. The actual cliff. it's not like a rocky death trap cliff, but the edge is all soft grass and if someone did fall, there's a slope below also covered in soft grass. You would just need someone to pull the person who fell back up. We sit at the edge and look outwards at the horizon.

Because it's winter the sun starts to set about now and it is about the most cheesiest place I could have brought her. I internally face palm. Nice going Mellark. She takes me by surprise when she leans her head on my shoulder and starts humming, Rues lullaby. I've always loved that tune and It reminds me of falling asleep to it as a kid.

We sit there for a bit, holding hands and watching the sun set over the water and I begin to fall asleep. Before I do I'm suddenly awakened by a harsh tug. I look to Caitlin, her eyes wide and full of panic. I look at her questionably And she looks at me as if I'm stupid and says "You almost fell of the cliff!" I start to laugh and then feel bad when I see how scared she looked. I calm myself and say " there's a ledge at the bottom I would have been fine." She now looks a bit mad. "Sorry for worrying you" I say a little bit cockily. And she smiles. I love her smile.

As the sun is now almost completely gone and people are beginning to leave I stand up and stretch knowing that if we don't leave now, we'll have to navigate through the dark with just the light of our cellphones. and no one wants that. Caitlin holds my hand again as we walk back with some kids from school whose names I don't know. We get back into town and the street lights are now on. I decide to try and be a gentlemen and offer to walk her home, which she accepts and when we get to her door, which is only down the street from my house. She leans in and kisses me on the cheek which leaves me blushing all the way home.
