Chapter 15
"I'm doing fine." Bonnie answered Sheriff Forbes. "Just trying to stay happy and healthy."
"Okay, mom. We're going to talk upstairs in my room." Caroline called to her mother as she grabbed Bonnie's arm and steered her upstairs. "So, tell me everything!"
"Well," Bonnie began "It kind of just happened."
"I'm sorry. I must not have said that right. I want to know everything about how you and Damon became a 'you and Damon'."
"You know, the usual way." Bonnie hedged. She didn't know what Caroline wanted from her. At first, she was kind of excited to tell Caroline. She needed a friend who would understand her attraction to Damon. She needed a friend who wasn't attracted to Damon herself. But, she didn't know how Caroline would react. She had learned to tolerate Damon, but that didn't mean she liked him or could understand why anyone else did.
"Seriously, Bonnie. Just be honest with me." Caroline softened her tone. "I'm your best friend. I will be there for you, as I am always am. Just tell me what's going on."
Bonnie couldn't keep anything from Caroline. Pacing around Caroline's room, she explained everything to her best friend, "A couple of weeks ago, Damon and I called a truce. He just wanted something to take his mind off of Elena. He decided to put all this attention on me. I didn't think it would work. I mean, come on, it's Damon. But, then we actually started hanging out. It turns out that he's kind of funny and charming when he's not being a homicidal maniac. Then, he sent me a flower and was just really sweet. Then, I realized I was looking forward to seeing him and wanting to see him just so he could tease me. So, I went to his house to tell him that I liked him. At first, he rejected me. I was distraught, to say the least. Of course, I went home, not wanting to embarrass myself by crying in front of him or doing something truly pathetic like begging him to be with me. Once I got home, though, he was there. At my house. Completely unexpected. Of course, I told him to leave me alone. Then, out of nowhere, he kissed me. He chose to be with me." Finished with her explanation in a rush, she looked at Caroline expectantly.
During Bonnie's speech, Caroline sat on her bed as she listened to her friend. "Oh. My. Gosh."
"Caroline?"
"You and Damon?"
"Yes?"
"Damon and you?"
"Yep."
"For real?"
"Caroline. It's not that crazy." Bonnie defended her relationship.
"Yes, Bonnie. It is."
Hurt, Bonnie sat in the desk chair and looked at her friend. "You're right. It is crazy. Totally unexpected. But, I'm happy." Bonnie said softly.
"Oh, Bonnie," Caroline rushed to reassure her. "I didn't mean it like that. It was just a lot to take in…especially in one breath. You've got to give me a minute."
Bonnie waited patiently for Caroline to express her feelings.
"So, you and Damon?" Caroline began. "It started with a truce, right?"
Bonnie nodded her head in the affirmative.
"You guys started hanging out. You enjoyed his company. Obviously, he did too. That's when Stefan and I saw you."
"Yes. But, at that point, nothing had happened. We were just starting to be friends really."
"And it continued until one day you realized that you felt more than friendship for him."
"Yes."
"So, you told him and now you two are a couple?"
"Basically."
"So, how was the kiss?"
"The kiss?" Bonnie echoed.
"Yeah, friend. You totally mentioned a kiss. How was it? Fantastic?"
Smiling, Bonnie remembered the first kiss between her and Damon. "It was unexpected, but great. However, the next day, when he kissed me, that kiss was fantastic." She concluded with a giggle.
"No regrets?"
"None. I mean, he's a great kisser. And let's face it, he's hot."
"He's alright." Caroline added. Maybe, she should bring her friend back down to reality. Cloud #9 was a hard place to come down from.
"No, he's hot. And he makes me laugh. He makes me angry. He makes me better. He pushes me and I challenge him. We're total opposites, but maybe that's a good thing."
"You really like him?"
"I do. Are you okay with that?"
"If you're happy, I'm happy." Caroline stood and walked towards her friend so she could hug her. Pulling back from the embrace she added, "But, if he hurts you, I'll kick his butt."
"I would expect nothing less." Bonnie smiled.
Sitting back on the bed, Caroline hated to bring up the elephant in the room. "Have you told Elena?"
"No, I haven't." She replied quietly. "I wanted today to be about me."
"That's completely understandable. But, you have to tell her."
"I know."
"And soon."
"I know. I know."
"And it will be better coming from you."
"When did you become so logical?"
"When Katherine turned me into a vampire." Caroline said simply.
"So, how do you think she'll handle it?" Bonnie asked, switching subjects.
"I'm not sure."
"I'm worried she'll be either really angry or she'll be really hurt."
"Probably both. And jealous too."
"Not helping." Bonnie quipped, staring darkly at Caroline.
"I am helping…by being honest."
"Do you think she'll ever accept it?"
"Of course, she will. She is your best friend."
"Who may or may not be in love with my boyfriend?"
"I didn't say it was an ideal situation."
Sighing, Bonnie dreaded the inevitable confrontation with Elena. She hoped her best friend would understand that she never meant to hurt her, but she couldn't help how she felt. "What if she wants to be with Damon?" Bonnie wondered out loud.
"Do you think it's possible?"
"I don't know. It could be."
"Last time, I checked, Elena didn't know which Salvatore brother she wanted to be with."
"What if she's ready to choose…and it turns out to be Damon."
"But, he's with you now."
"I know he is. But, he waited so long for Elena."
"True. Yet, she didn't choose him. She didn't choose anyone."
Bonnie glanced towards Caroline. She wanted Caroline to be right. She wanted everything to work out. Ugh, she sighed, life was so complicated in Mystic Falls.
"Besides," Caroline continued sweetly, "If Damon does make the wrong choice, use your power to either erase all his memories or kill him."
Laughing, Bonnie hugged her best friend. "As always, thanks for the advice."
"Anytime. You are my best friend."
"I need to talk to Elena. I should go and talk to her now while I have the nerve."
"Do you want me to go with you?"
"Having you there with me would be easier, but I should do this alone."
"Are you sure?"
"Not really, but I have to."
"Yeah, I get it. But, I'm here if you need to talk afterwards. If you want to talk afterwards. No matter what goes on between you and Elena, you're both my friends. I will always be here for you guys."
Giving her friend one last hug, Bonnie whispered, "Wish me luck" before heading out Caroline's bedroom door. I can do this. She encouraged herself. What's the worst that could happen?
"Good luck," Caroline wished her departing friend. She was definitely going to need it. Telling Elena would not be easy.
