Hey guys! So I am back with an update, finally. I want to apologize for the long wait and I hope this five years later plan isn't so bad and you guys enjoy it. Also, this may turn into a slow burn, but then again I was never very patient so we shall see.

Nevertheless, please enjoy this chapter even though it is rather short. After all, in taking this fanfic one chapter at a time and do not yet know how it will end.

Caroline exited her bedroom and made her way into the living room with an enormous smile on her lips.

Klaus sat there with a bottle of beer in hand and when his eyes landed upon her, he perked up.

"You look stunning, Care." Klaus announced as he stood up and made his way over to her before giving her a kiss on the cheek.

"Thank you," she smiled as she gave a little curtsy.

With a chuckle, he placed his arm around her shoulders and led her to the couch before the two sat down.

"Tonight's the night, huh?" He asked, referring to her date with Aiden.

"Yep," she nodded. "He decided to pick me up from here, so you'll be able to see him again."

"Great…" He said with a roll of his stormy blue-gray eyes.

"And Klaus, we both know you know his name, so none of that nonsense."

"I can't promise anything, but I'll try." He responded innocently as he fluttered his eyelashes at her.

Giggling, Caroline hit hit him on the shoulder and he winced in pain.

"Don't even," she said aloud. "I'm fairly certain that you've been hit by stronger people. Oh yeah, remember that time in the club like a year ago?"

"I do," he nodded as he thought back to that night.

Ten Months Ago

Sitting by the bar with a glass of scotch in hand, Klaus looked around the populated dance floor.

His eyes strayed to Caroline who was currently dancing with Bonnie.

The girls seemed to be having fun and Klaus sighed as he saw Caroline's dress ride up her legs a bit.

Groaning, he threw his head back and drank the remaining contents of the glass before he stood up.

Perhaps it was time to admit to Caroline what he felt. Holding his head up high, he moved through the dance floor and just as he was going to approach her, she found him pushing some guy away.

"I'm not interested." He heard her say, but it seemed the bloke wasn't comprehending her words.

He grabbed her arm and got behind her just as Caroline let out a string of profanities.

Without a second thought, Klaus made his way over to her.

When Caroline spotted him, she gave him a small smile and he smiled back.

"What has you smiling, baby girl?" The bloke questioned as he ground his front against her back.

"Get away from her, you bloody arse." Klaus ordered as he closed the space between them and pushed the other guy away.

"Who are you? Baby girl's boyfriend?" He asked and Klaus narrowed his eyes at him.

"As a matter of fact, I am. And to be completely honest I don't fancy another man trying to possess my woman."

"All is well, buddy. Come on, let's have a threesome or something. I'll watch." He announced with a wink.

Klaus pulled Caroline away from the other guy before he punched him square in the face.

"Fuck off," he ordered before he turned away and led Caroline to the bar with his hand in hers.

Stunned, the other guy simply stared after them.

At the bar, Klaus found Caroline a seat and motioned for her to take a seat before he ordered four shots of tequila.

When the bartender served the shots, Klaus picked up a shot and handed her the other. Throwing their heads back, they drank the tequila before taking a bite out of a lemon. They did much the same with the second round and when they were finished, Caroline threw her arms around him.

"Thank you," she whispered into his ear before she gave him a kiss on the cheek.

"For what? I did nothing," he assured as a blush appeared on his cheeks.

"Well for one, you got that asshole away from me and for another, you got me two shots off my favorite tequila."

Chuckling, he shook his head and then Caroline moved away from him.

"Trust me when I tell you I took great pleasure in punching the bastard. Drunk or not, one should not act like that."

"True enough," she agreed. "But that was hot,

Nik. You came in like a storm." She added before a hiccup escaped her mouth.

"You're drunk, Care Bear." Klaus announced before looking away from her.

After all, he felt the heat quickly enveloping his cheeks and he wasn't about to scare the girl he loved away.

Klaus was brought out of the memory when he heard the doorbell ring. Looking in the direction of the door, he spotted Caroline turning the doorknob.

Then, she allowed a man to enter and motioned for him to head into the living room. The man did as he was bade and appeared on the threshold of the living room. He stopped when he spotted Klaus standing there, though.

"Hello, Mikaelson." Aiden greeted and Klaus nodded in response.

Caroline pulled Aiden over the threshold and held his hand as a bright smile appeared on her lips. Aiden smiled back at her and Klaus couldn't help but feel the little twinge in his chest.

"Please take a seat." Klaus urged.

"Oh, no." Aiden shook his head. "We should really get going. Our reservation is set for eight."

"Your reservation? Of course," Klaus nodded. "Nevertheless, please sit for a little while. I'd love to catch up."

"You're the best, Nik." Caroline said aloud as she went over to him and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

Smiling at the blonde's praise, he looked down at his feet before he looked back at Aiden.

"Catch up? I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but we never got along. I simply want to take Caroline out on that date."

"Of course," he nodded. "Well then go ahead. Have fun," Klaus added.

"Aiden, come on. Let Klaus give you a bottle of beer and then we'll get going." Caroline told him, looking over at him with confusion in her bright blue eyes.

After all, she didn't understand why he was acting so hostile towards her best friend. Sure, they didn't get along a couple of years ago, but they were both older and wiser than before- at least Klaus was.

"Fine," Aiden sighed before he took a seat.

Nodding, Klaus made his way into the kitchen and took out two bottles of beer. He handed one bottle to Aiden and the other to Caroline just as he reached for his open beer.

"To new friendships and relationships." He toasted before throwing his head back and taking a large gulp.

Caroline and Aiden drank their own bottles and soon thereafter, Klaus was sitting in his living room alone…

With a sigh, he wondered how it is that he had gotten here. The Klaus from five years ago knew nothing of loneliness and despair. Now, however, he wasn't so lucky. Though he knew that he could go out to some bar and pick up some woman if he so pleased, he no longer got much of a thrill from it. Not after finally realizing that he wanted Caroline for himself.

"Too late, buddy." He said aloud before he stood up and made his way into his bedroom.

Reaching for his sketchpad and a pencil, he leaned against the bedframe and lost himself in his sketches…

Later that night, Klaus was brought out of his art-induced reverie when he heard a soft knock on his bedroom door.

"Come in," he said and Caroline did just that.

"You're still up," Caroline noted as she spotted his sketchpad by his side.

"I couldn't sleep and I had some ideas that I wanted to sketch." He replied before he tapped on the empty space beside him.

Moving in his direction, she sat down beside him before she took ahold of his sketchpad and browsed through it with a small smile on her lips.

"How was your date?" Klaus questioned even though he didn't want to know. Even though he was happy for her, he was still a tad bit jealous.

"It was great," she replied. "Aiden was a perfect gentleman and we're going to go out again soon."

"I'm happy to hear that, Care. You deserve to have such a guy in your life." He told her as he gave her a small smile.

"Klaus, is something bothering you?" Caroline questioned as she lay down beside him on the bed.

"Bothering me?" He asked. "No, it's nothing… I'm just a little nervous with the gallery opening and whatnot. What if it isn't a success?" He asked.

"It will be a success, Klaus. I know because I have seen your work and fallen in love with it. Also, you have a great personality and there aren't all that many great artists out there anymore."

"I wouldn't be so sure." He responded before he stood up and put his face in his hands.

Moving over to him, she put her arm around his shoulder and whispered words of encouragement in his ear.

"You'll do great, Nik. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that everybody who will see your work will be ensnared with it from the start."

"If you say so," he muttered under his breath.

"Alright, so I do not like seeing you this way, so I am going to change into something more comfortable and then we'll watch a movie together."

"I really don't feel like going into the living room right now, Care." He stated. "I'd much rather stay here."

"That works too. I have a Netflix account, remember?" The blonde responded just as she made her way towards the door and into her own bedroom.

With a shake of his head, Klaus stood up and removed his jeans and Henley before he put on a pair of sweatpants and v-neck.

Once he was comfortable enough, he got back into bed and placed his sketchpad on the bedside table. Caroline entered shortly after wearing a pair of pink boxer shorts and a spaghetti strapped tank top. Placing her laptop on the bed, she left and returned with beer and chips.

"Beer and chips, Nik? I know you want it." She said holding it up in front of him.

"You're right, obviously." He replied as he moved and gave her the left side of the bed. Laying down beside him, she placed the snacks between them before she began searching for a movie.

Finally finding one that she knew they would both enjoy, she got comfortable.

That night, the two of them finished watching the movie and fell asleep on the same bed.

Later that night, Klaus awoke and looked at the woman that lay beside him. Her eyelashes fanned against her face and she looked to be at peace.

With a small smile, he gathered the discarded snacks and bottles of beers and placed them on the floor. Then, he placed her laptop on top of his sketch pad and got back into bed.

Looking away from her, he tried to fall back asleep, but found that he couldn't because he wanted something… Something that he wasn't sure Caroline would be happy to learn about.

Huffing in annoyance and frustration, he shut his eyes tightly. Just as he was drifting off to sleep, he came awake…

How would it feel to kiss her? He wondered and though he wanted to find out, he couldn't. Not when she was unconscious and interested in another man.

With that thought in mind, he got out of the bed and moved into the living room.

He realized that perhaps he wouldn't be getting any sleep if he slept beside her and her vanilla scent teased him which is why he opted for the couch.

There you have it! So, how is it going thus far? I hope that you guys don't mind where I am taking this fanfic and even though I am not sure how it will end, know that there will be a happy ending (hopefully).
