Hello, my lovelies. So before I say anything else, I want to apologize for the very infrequent updates. Trust me, I wanted to update earlier, but this summer has been crazy. I had work everyday and summer classes immediately after. By the time I got home, I was exhausted and just couldn't write. But now, my summer classes are over so I am going to try very hard to update these next few weeks before my fall semester begins. I'd like to apologize and I'd like to thank those of you that have stuck by my writing. It truly means a lot to me and I hope you all enjoy this chapter.
This is already chapter 18 and I'm thinking that maybe this particular fanfic will have another 3 or 4 chapters before its over, so I'm getting there :)
Enjoy!
Caroline quickly took out her cell phone and dialed 911. The dispatcher answered and the blonde quickly told the man what it is that had happened and where they were located.
Then, she went back to Klaus's side and sat down beside him. She held his hand in her own and felt the tears coming to her eyes but quickly pushed them down.
It wouldn't do to start crying at the moment. Right now she had to be strong for the both of them.
Fortunately, the ambulance showed up a short time later and the paramedics quickly came in holding a gurney.
They gently picked Klaus up and lay him on the gurney. He exhaled a sound of a pain, but didn't awaken.
Then, they carried him into the ambulance and Caroline jumped in as well.
"What happened here, ma'am?" The paramedic that sat in the back asked.
"I don't exactly know." Caroline answered honestly. "When I entered the gallery, I saw him lying there with a nasty ga- gash on his head. I checked for a pulse and felt it which is when I called 911."
"I see," he replied. "May I ask what your relationship to the patient is?"
"I- I'm his girlfr- bestfriend." Caroline whispered as she took ahold of his hand.
"I see," he answered. "From what I can tell, your best friend was taken by surprise and hit by something wooden, I'm thinking."
"Is his life in danger? Please tell me that his life isn't in danger, oh god!" She cried out hysterically not knowing how to get her emotions under control.
"Ma'am, I don't believe this wound is life-threatening. Head injuries usually bleed profusely and it may not even be a big deal. Nevertheless as soon as we get to the emergency room we will make sure that there is no swelling in his brain."
"Okay," she said. "But why isn't he waking up?"
"This is normal. He may have blacked out from the pain and I'm sure his body is under a state of distress. That may be why he hasn't awoken yet."
"Oh Klaus," Caroline whispered as she took ahold of his hand and pulled it close to her chest.
Soon thereafter, they arrived at the hospital and the paramedics rolled Klaus into the emergency room.
He was taken to a private room and two nurses quickly arrived.
The paramedics told the nurses what had occurred and soon they were on their way. They told Caroline that they hoped Klaus would undergo a swift recovery and she thanked them.
Then, the nurses began writing down notes and soon thereafter a doctor walked in and looked Klaus over.
The doctor ordered a cat scan just to be safe and soon they took Klaus back to the room.
The doctor approached Caroline and gave her a warm smile.
"It looks like your boyfriend will be just fine. I didn't see any swelling in the brain or anything like that. As of right now, I believe that he needs his rest and when he wakes up he'll simply have a headache that will go away soon."
"Thank you, doctor." Caroline said and the doctor then excused himself.
Caroline sat down beside Klaus and shortly after, she heard his voice.
"C- Caroline?" He said through parched lips.
"Here," the blonde answered as she smiled at him.
"My head hurts." He said as he smiled back at her.
"I know, Nik. You'll be better soon."
"What happened? Did I fall?"
"You don't remember?" Caroline questioned as her eyes widened.
"No," he answered and then his jaw dropped slightly. "Wait, wait… I was at the gallery and saw a shadow, but before I could do anything I blacked out."
Sighing, Caroline nodded and gently caressed his cheek.
"You were hit in the back of the head by some wooden item. I don't know what it was, but I'll find out. That I promise you."
"But who would want too…?" He started, but then his lips tightened together. "It was that madman, wasn't it?"
"I don't know for certain but it is starting to look like it. I have to go through the camera footage."
"I haven't set up the cameras yet, Care. I completely forgot with everything going on and the opening of the gallery." Klaus said as he bit down on his bottom lip worriedly.
"Don't even worry about it, Nik. Everything is going to be just fine. For now I just want you to rest." Caroline said as she bent down and gave him a kiss on the cheek.
Then she turned on her heel and started for the door.
"Where are you going?" Klaus asked, the curiosity evident in his voice.
"I'll return shortly, okay?"
"Okay," he nodded as he watched her go.
When Caroline was in the corridor, she moved towards the nurses station and nicely asked for a pen and paper. Then she got to writing and asked Klaus's nurse to please give him her letter when he was feeling better. When the nurse agreed to do just that Caroline thanked her and said goodbye.
When she was outside, she sat down on a bench and dialed Kol's phone number.
"Caroline?" He said when he answered.
"Hey Kol, how are you?" She asked suddenly feeling utterly exhausted.
"I'm okay, how are you? Is everything okay?"
"No," she replied, deciding that it would be best not to beat around the bush.
"What happened?" He asked worriedly. "Are you okay? Are you hurt?"
"Tyler happened," she told him. "And no I'm fine."
"Tyler? You mean the one from five years ago?" He questioned.
"Yes,"
"What did he do?"
"I went to your brother's gallery because I wanted to get him some lunch. When I got there I saw Nik lying there with a gash on the back of the head."
"Oh my god. Is Nik alright? Have you called my parents yet? Or the others?" Kol asked as his voice grew increasingly worried.
"No, just you." She said honestly. "I called 911 and then when the ambulance came they took him to NYU Langone. Nik underwent a cat scan and the doctor said he would be fine and he is. He just has an awful headache."
"Are you with him now?"
"No," she said sadly.
"Well why not, Care?" Kol asked, the confusion evident in his voice.
"I need to disappear from his life, Kol. That's why."
"Come on now, let's not be hasty." He said.
"Kol, as long as I am near him, he'll be in danger. I can't have that on my consciousness and I really need you to understand that."
"But Care, you know that he loves you in a forever kind of way, right? I don't think he'll care if he's in danger. He'll be more worried about keeping you out of danger."
"I need to deal with Tyler myself, Kol. I really do, so just please get over here and watch after your brother. I'll be back as soon as I can."
"Oh no, Nik won't like that."
"That's too bad because I am going to go whether he likes it or not."
"But what will you tell him?"
"I'll figure it out, but right now, I need to go home and pack."
"Pack? Where the hell do you think you're going?"
"Back to Mystic Falls. That's where."
"Mystic Falls? There's nothing left for you there. Why are you going there if all places?"
"I want Tyler to find out and follow me. He has an issue with me, nobody else."
"Okay, but you do realize that you're putting your life in the hands of a psychopath, right?"
"Maybe," she shrugged. "But I think it's time I moved on with my life and I can't do that if that asshole continuously fucks up my life."
"At least let me go with you. I'll have your back."
"No," she said adamantly. "I need you to watch after Klaus. And please don't tell him that I'm leaving yet. When he gets better, I'll tell him what's going on, but I need you to promise that you'll keep him from following me."
"How am I supposed to do that, Care? You know how my brother is… I'm sure he'll just knock me out of the way and go on his merry way."
"Kol, just please. I need to take care of things."
"Okay, okay… Fine, I'll be at the hospital soon, but I want you to keep me updated."
"Okay, I will." Caroline said before she thanked him and hung up.
When Caroline entered the apartment, she immediately felt as though something wasn't right.
The temperature in the room was cold and it was dark everywhere even though she specifically left the lamp in the living room on.
Then, she felt a presence behind her and slowly turned around.
Tyler stood there with a gun in his hand and a crazed look in his eyes.
"Did you miss me, cupcake?" He asked as he stepped towards her.
Caroline took a step back and raised her hand to keep him where he was.
"I did," she replied even though she absolutely did not.
"Oh yeah? What, was your little roommate not man enough for you?"
"I don't know what you're talking about." She replied, trying to direct their conversation away from Klaus.
"There's no reason to lie, baby girl. I know what you've been doing while I was away. But now I'm back, and I've missed you oh so much."
"Lie? Why would I lie? I'm being honest. Me and him are just roommates."
"Perhaps, but I don't like the sound of that. I don't want my pretty little blonde shacking up with some tortured artist."
"You hurt him, you know." Caroline said matter-of-factly. "So bad that they don't even know if he'll wake up." She lied, hoping that he would believe her and stop trying to hurt Klaus."
"Good," he smirked. "I'm happy to have another one of your men out of the way."
"What are you talking about?" Caroline asked, genuinely confused."
"Daniel… That night, the two of you were fighting because a little birdy told him about the type of person you really were."
"You're lying." She said, suddenly feeling lightheaded.
Shaking the fogginess from her head, she looked at him with alarmed eyes.
"I'm not. Daniel was good, so I did feel bad about what I said to him, but in the end it worked out well."
"You couldn't have known what was going on between us. You're just trying to get a rise out of me."
"Truly, I'm not. Daniel loved you, you see. So when I showed him that picture of you kissing somebody else, he was heartbroken."
"Kissing somebody else? I would never cheat on him."
"I knew that, but he didn't. You know photoshop, don't you? It gives individuals the ability to manipulate photographs. Add people that weren't actually there and that's what I did."
"But why? I didn't even know you then."
"No, you didn't. That's because you were so in love with Daniel that you never noticed anybody else. But I noticed you. At ten years old, I saw you at the park and at that moment, I knew that we were destined to be together."
"Destined? Tyler, be reasonable."
"Being reasonable isn't a part of my psychology, cupcake. All I know is that we're going to live a long and happy life together."
"What are you going to do? Kidnap me? You can't carry me out of here. There are people everywhere." She reminded him trying to keep her voice from cracking even though she was a mess on the inside.
"You underestimate me, my love. Surely you realize that I have a plan. I always do, after all. And honestly, this couldn't have panned out any better. Your rescuer from five years ago won't interrupt us and I doubt you have anybody else that cares enough about you to do anything about it."
Then, Tyler motioned for somebody behind her and before she could react, there was a napkin being pressed to her nose and she was falling into a dark oblivion.
The last thing she heard before losing her consciousness were the following words:
"You're mine now."
There you have it, my darlings! So Tyler was the one at fault here for what happened to Daniel, surprise surprise. And also, Tyler now has Caroline in his clutches. Stick around and you'll find out how this story will finish. Again, thank you so much for reading. I appreciate it so so much!
