Chapter 6
"Are you sure this is where she lives?" Hige asked, for the third time. They had been knocking on Leara's door now, for the past 10 minutes, Kiba had honked twice, and still no sign of anybody.
"Well, I mean...I think so."
"Okay, that's so unhelpful." Hige muttered, and then quickly felt like a jerk when he saw Toboe's face fall, he clearly felt bad about the whole situation, and making him feel guilty wouldn't help anyone.
"Sorry Hige...I..."
"Well, we can't keep Cat, Kiba kept sneezing on the ride over, however, I happen to know the coolest girl in existence, I know she'll help out."
"Blue?"
"Yes, Blue, who else?!" Hige yelled, as they headed back to the car.
"Hey, Bro. We got the wrong address, can you drive us to Bear Lane?" Hige asked as the boys once again piled on to the car, thankfully, Cat had fallen asleep, but that didn't stop Kiba from sneezing as soon as they got in the car.
"Bear Lane? Hige, are you making me drive you to Blue's? What's going on?"
"It's my fault, Kiba..." Toboe started, but was quickly shoved by the soon to be 15 year old.
"I left my math book in her car, and I need it for homework. You know I'm failing that class." It was a true story, he was failing math, and he had left his book in her car, during the "study session"
"...Whatever" The oldest boy shrugged, growing more irritated by the second. This was the last time he drove them anywhere, he promised himself as he headed to Blue's house 15 minutes away.
Blue Yaiden was startled by somebody throwing rocks on her window. She had been watching TV, a show about haunted houses, so she immediately tensed and went over to her window, but not before grabbing a baseball bat. She carefully walked over and peeked outside. It was two young boys. One of them she definitely recognized.
"Hige! What the hell are you doing here?" she hissed, upset that he wouldn't have texted her beforehand, he had scared her!
"Sorry!" He yelled as if he didn't realize how ridiculous this was. He was always so careless.
"Shh!" Hushing him immediately, it's like he was brain dead! Her father was inside, and he'd definitely kill the two young boys just for stepping on the lawn, not to mention having a conversation with his daughter. Blue grabbed a black sweater from her desk, and ran downstairs, trying to be as quiet as possible.
Downstairs, Hige and Toboe sat on the porch staring at each other, and having a conversation with their eyes.
'Are you sure she'll help?' Said Toboe's.
'Stop being so damn dramatic' Said Hige's.
Blue ran toward them, looking upset, but throwing herself into Hige' arms, so she couldn't have been that angry. "Why in the world would you throw rocks at my window?!"
"Well, you didn't pick up your phone and I didn't want your dad to answer the door..." The whine was accompanied with a boy-ish shrug, and the girl felt her stomach tighten with attraction. Why was she so attracted to him?
The girl sighed, realizing she must have had her phone on silent. That's when she looked over to Toboe and saw the bundle in his arms. A beautiful, black, blue eyed kitten, who had just woken up and very much wanted to play.
"No" She muttered. "Whatever you want, the answer is no"
Toboe sighed, he should have known. Nobody actually wanted to be bombarded by an animal, but now he'd gotten to know 'Cat', and wasn't about to abandon the poor girl.
"Blue, come on! We can't just leave this baby cat on the streets, she needs a home, plus, it's only for the night, until Toboe-you remember Toboe-until he can talk to his friend tomorrow!"
She frowned, moving next to the boy who waved awkwardly at her, and scratched the kitten's ears. She was beautiful, and she knew Pops wouldn't be upset if she kept a kitten, he was soft, in that special way. He only showed that sweet side to her, but still, she knew it was there.
"Is that so?" She finally whispered, looking at the young boy.
"It is, I promise Blue, and I'll owe you a favor-what ever you want, that's a promise!"Toboe rambled before his older brother nudged him to shut up, it wasn't wise to promise so many things to someone like Blue Yaiden.
"Ugh! Hige, you're so stupid..."
"I know." Hige laughed, but knew it was as good as done. They had a connection, body and soul, and they'd always help each other out.
"This is stupid" She was laughing now, taking the kitten from Toboe, and giving him a wink. "You better not just forget about her...what's her name?"
"Oh...her name is Cat." Toboe admitted, feeling silly now, in front of this beautiful young girl. She was so confident and cool- he still found it hard to believe that she actually had feelings for Hige.
"How very creative." Sarcasm.
Kiba all but growled as he waited for Hige and Toboe, there was no way that getting a math book should have taken that long. He'd already gotten a call from Tsume, worried, and that made the 17 year old feel like shit. He was supposed to be responsible. He was supposed to make sure that things weren't so overwhelming for his older brother. It had always been like that, after their parents died. Even when they were living with Granny, and she, bless her heart, did everything to keep them together.
She was loving, but she was old and sick. She babied Toboe, and even Hige. Hell, she wanted to baby them all, but Tsume and Kiba wouldn't let themselves enjoy her love. Everything was hard, but they had wanted to stay together. Their parents savings helped them for that first year, and then Tsume had needed to start working. Granny would bake and try to sell that, but she was really bad at it. She was always feeding everyone, even if they didn't have the money to pay.
And then she died.
That's when things were the darkest for the family, they had been split up.
Toboe and Hige finally ran to the car, interrupting Kiba's thoughts, but not diminishing the anger that had been building up. He couldn't help but notice that there was no math book in the 14 year old's hands. Yeah, he was pissed.
"Hey, sorry we took so long, I-"
"Stop. I'm pissed off, and don't want to hear any lies" He muttered out, he wasn't yelling or lecturing, or even expressive, but the two younger boys knew better than to keep talking.
Tsume frowned as he saw his 3 younger brother walk into the apartment, it had been a long, weird day, and now this? To say he was upset would have been an understatement. Kiba looked pissed as well, and just rolled his eyes when they made eye contact.
"So, 'We'll be back in 10 minutes' turned into almost an hour, because...?" His question was directed toward Hige and Toboe, as Kiba sat down next to him and glared at the two, he hadn't been willing to push it on his own, but now that Tsume was asking, he was expecting an answer, and maybe even an apology.
"Oh...Well, Leara wasn't home, that's who we'd originally gone to see, so I could give her some notes she let me borrow..."
"And that's when I realized I'd left my math book at Blue's, so we just went to grab that." The 14 year old tried to smile, knowing he shouldn't have mentioned Blue, but it's not like it was some big secret.
"Okay, I don't understand how that takes an hour."
"You both lied to me" Kiba started now, clearly upset, clearly not his usual self. He was normally calm and quiet, but he actually had the worst temper of them all, if it was brought forth.
"I had things to do, and you made me wait around like an asshole while you did who knows what."
"Kiba" Tsume admonished quietly, not a fan of the language. The 17 year old just glared, before turning to the younger two.
"So? You don't have your math book, Hige."
Oh. Oh. Hige groaned, of course he hadn't gotten the book. He turned carefully to his little brother. Toboe was so innocent, he really was. He was the best brother anyone could ask for, and he was always getting into trouble because of him, so, swallowing the frog in his throat, he did what Toboe would do for him in a heart beat.
"Wow...yeah, I'm so dumb. I'm sorry, Kiba. I...just wanted to see Blue."
"What is it with you and that 16 year old girl, Hige? I'm not okay with it." Tsume groaned out, aware that Hige had a crush on the girl, but not much else. She was the daughter of Quent Yaiden, someone Tsume personally blamed for splitting them up in the cruelest way, after their grandmother died. Blue was just trouble waiting to happen.
"Well- well, I don't care what you're okay with, I love her-"
"You do not love her!"
"Yes, I do!" Hige shouted now, forgetting that he'd just been trying to keep Toboe out of trouble. It was personal now; he did love the blue eyed beauty, and it mattered very little what his brothers thought. He was aware that they were now all staring at him like he'd grown a second head-he wasn't exactly known as a yeller.
"Go to you room!" Was the angry response he got, and while he didn't want to argue, he did give his best 'I hate you' glare to Tsume, before stomping off.
"Well..." Toboe started, trying to get out of the room as soon as possible, but being unsure if he was in trouble. "Teenagers, huh?" He laughed awkwardly, but when he didn't get a response, he, too, scurried off.
The older two brothers stood in silence for a moment, even after they heard Toboe go inside his room. Kiba finally got up, turning to Tsume quietly.
"That was stupid." He admitted, not sure who he was angry at.
"Yeah, it was. I don't get why you gave them a ride, Kiba. This is Freeze city, it's not safe at this hour..."
"Oh, so it would have been better to let them sneak off? Tsume, you're so dense sometimes, I swear..."
"And you're an idiot! I thought we were supposed to be in this shit together, but you, as always, just do your own thing-"
"Oh, shut the fuck up." Kiba replied, officially angry, and not wanting to fight anymore, left the apartment. He needed to run.
Tsume stayed behind to stew in his own anger. Kiba was such a pain. They were brothers, and best friends, and loyal to each other, but they also both had tempers, and they fought more often than not. It was a problem.
