Chapter 11
'Awkward. Definitely awkward. Very awkward. Okay, shut up Hige, we've established the fact that this is awkward...It's just SO awkward...maybe I should say something. Of course, If I do, he'll probably kill me. No, he wouldn't. I'm his daughter's friend after all. Okay, face it, he's going to kill you anyway- just say something. Oh but what can I say? How about, nice boots? No one is wearing boots Hige. boots? boobs? No, not boobs. Definitely not the time to be thinking about boobs ...I think I'm talking to myself...am I? Yes, I am, Ohmy...stop.'
The soon to be 15 year old shook his head, and made himself concentrate. Talking to himself wasn't helping anyone.
"I..." He started, but was quickly shut down by the most hateful glare he'd ever seen, and it was directed at him. This was bad.
"Shut up."
Hige made himself swallow the saliva that his been accumulating in his mouth, and he considered his options. This man was going to shoot him, or arrest him, or drag him to Tsume, who would then kill him. Either way, this was it. Still, if that was his last night...he was glad to have spent it with Blue.
'Damn, I'm dead' he thought, as he peered at the clock next to Blue. It read that it was past midnight.
"Pops..."
"Shut up, sweetheart" Quent replied, much kinder than he'd been with the boy, but still, he was livid. This wasn't what he wanted for his precious daughter. He didn't want to come home one day and find out that his princess, his teenage princess had gotten pregnant. No, he'd definitely kill someone then. It was pretty obvious that things hadn't gotten that far tonight, but ...they could have.
First, he had pulled Hige off of Blue and then yelled at both of them to 'Get downstairs'. They had done nothing but sit, while he paced. Blue wanted nothing more than to be sitting next to Hige, to hold his hand, and let him make her feel safe, in that special way that he could, but she didn't want to anger her father more. Quent was a good man, she truly, honestly believed that; but he was also a man of justice, propriety and law. He would never change the way he viewed the world, and Blue didn't agree with that.
Finally he went over to Hige and grabbed his arm, it was rough. It was too rough for a parent scolding a child that was not his own, but it was not too rough for the police commissioner, though the boy still struggled, and Blue still shrieked.
"Pops, you're going to hurt him! Please let him go!"
"Blue Yaiden, go to you room!" He yelled as he continued to drag the boy to the front door. Blue was not having it, she ran to the boy and began professing her love. Clearly she'd seen too many movies, and Quent blamed himself.
"I love him!" She confessed, and the man had to roll his eyes. He was not being that harsh.
"I'm taking him home, Blue, not shooting him. Go to you room. " He said angrily, probably more so than she'd ever seen him, and part of her was dying to listen to him, but still, Hige...
The boy, sensing her desperation and internal conflict, managed to stop struggling and gave her a wary smile. It immediately made her feel better.
"Blue, it's okay. It's okay, just listen to your dad."
Quent gave him a look, okay, so... maybe he wasn't the worst kid in the world, still, before Blue could answer back, he'd shoved the boy out of the house and into his patrol car. He was going to make sure the little idiot stayed away from his daughter.
Hige felt like such a criminal, and he didn't know why. This felt unfair, any other father would have just made him leave, not put him in the back of a police car. At least he hadn't hand cuffed him. The boy desperately wanted to say something to make it all better, to make it go away, but Quent wouldn't even spare him a glance.
The man didn't speak as he drove, or when he stopped the car, or when he dragged Hige to the third floor. The 14 year old did briefly wonder how he knew where Hige lived, but decided not to ask. Quent Yaiden did not speak when he knocked, hard, on the door, and he didn't speak when Kiba yelled 'What the hell...?"
Finally, when Kiba threw the door open, Mr. Yaiden spoke.
"I have something that belongs to you" He seethed, still not letting Hige go. There would be a bruise later. Kiba seemed in shock for a full 5 seconds, before he yelled for Tsume. The oldest boy was wearing jeans, a black shirt, and his leather jacket. He had just gotten home, and was surprised to hear that Hige had been missing.
He immediately scowled at seeing Commissioner Yaiden in his doorway, and as much as he wanted to grab his brother from the old man's clutches, he was lost. He didn't know what the hell was going on.
It was Kiba who grabbed on to Hige's free arm, and tugged. Quent released him, but the murderous glare in his eyes did not dissipate.
"Listen well, you pack of selfish, irresponsible brats. I just caught this-" His glare turned to Hige, who was trying to hide in shame, but found it hard with Kiba's hand now keeping him in place.
"this no good delinquent in my home, with my daughter. I am well aware that she is not innocent, but fair warning, if it happens again, I will arrest him for trespassing, or whatever else I can. If you don't keep him on a leash, I'll be sure to send a social worker over to break up this little band of merry men."
Tsume was scowling now, angry-livid. Right now, it didn't matter what Hige had or hadn't done, what mattered was that this man get off his property and stop threatening him, or he was going to attack him. Kiba could sense it too, hell, he felt the same.
"I think you've said enough, Mr. Yaiden." Kiba warned, ready to shut the door in his face.
"That's Commissioner Yaiden" Quent spat, and then turned to leave. They had better mind him, or he would use whatever means necessary to split the family apart, and keep Hige away from Blue.
Kiba did, finally close the door, thought he didn't let his grip go, and Hige's thoughts turned to Blue and Toboe. He hoped Blue would be okay, and he hoped, very much, that Toboe would wake up and make all of this better. Everyone like Toboe, Toboe could melt hearts. Where was he?
He wasn't expecting sympathy, but he definitely didn't expect what happened next. Tsume bit the edge of his lip, turned to his brother and backhanded him. Kiba, who also hadn't been expecting that, quickly let him go, feeling bad that he had attributed in keeping him still. Hige dropped to the floor and his hand immediately went to his mouth, where he tasted blood, his eyes sparkled with hurt feelings. He'd never been hit, not like that.
"You, stupid, stupid little boy!" Tsume yelled, and it was a scary kind of yell, like he might hit him again, so Hige half hid behind Kiba.
"How could you do that to us? To Toboe? You realize Quent can and will tear us apart, right? How could you be so fucking selfish?!"
"Tsume!" Kiba yelled, not recognizing his brother, and being far too aware that Hige was practically shaking behind him. Tsume didn't go bat shit crazy, Tsume didn't swear at the boys...
"No! I'm so fucking sick of you defending him!" He yelled now at Kiba, but Kiba could hold his own. The 17 year old glowered fiercely, and stepped forward, as if daring Tsume to fight him.
"Well, I'm sick of your yelling, I'm sick of you thinking you're in charge of everyone-"
At that, Tsume gave an ugly, mean laugh, and headed toward the door. "Oh, well thanks to him" He sneered, glaring at Hige, who really couldn't look at him. "Who knows where any of us will end up, all I know is that we'll end up alone, so you won't have to worry about my yelling, anymore!"With a slam of the door, he was gone.
Kiba didn't move, at first, Hige was still on the floor behind him, and there were too many thoughts in his head. Would they really be broken up? He was pissed off.
The blue eyed young man turned, looking at his brother. He wasn't happy, but when Hige looked up at him with big, sad eyes, he was somewhat moved.
"Put an ice pack on that." He offered, and then started to walk out the front door, Hige scurried to his feet and got a hold of his jacket.
"Kiba... don't leave. Please."
Kiba sighed, there were too many emotions. There was anger, and worry, and... he needed to run.
"You don't get to ask that right now." He jerked his arm away, and hurried out, realizing that hurt eyes were watching him go.
