A/n This is a story that was supposed to be for school, but got away on me :) It's just a short story, but I had a lot of (slightly sadistic) fun writing it. Enjoy!

Shadows danced in flickering undulations. Long thin fingers crept along the walls, shifting out of existence in a blink. In the darkest recesses lay impenetrable masses of black, like living ink, where it seems as if anything could happen while lost in it's depths and no one would ever know. Gazes didn't dare linger for long; something was always behind you, reveling in the utter silence of it's leisurely grace.
Nothing seemed as it was in the faraway rays of sunlight's glare, because everything was as it shouldn't be. The moon's ethereal presence gave life to twisted apparitions, mockeries of objects that had once seemed harmless. Any semblance of innocence they had once possesed was banished into a corner of the mind. The frigid lack of sunlight's warmth was tangible; the ever-constant pits of shadow were utterly devoid of both illumination and heat. Hiding in darkness, the bitter cold seemed to sap your strength, shredding any illusion of benign intent that had been clinging to hope. Gasping breaths turn to frozen crystals in the air, and each breath burned. Cracked lips stung with no hope of relief, as each breath dragged with it precious moisture. The tangible mix of ice and shadow enjoys tracing shivers up backs, the shudders drawing the interest of intangible monstrosities lurking all around.
The slightest gust of air brushed past in the stillness of the night, causing the lone figure to whip around, trembling. Eyes darted everywhere, trying and failing to penetrate the opaque, misty, shadows. Determination crumbled to pieces.
The little girl screamed and jumped into her bed, desperately trying to escape the room that had turned on her. Scrabbling for the covers, she grabbed them and yanked them up over her head, curling into a ball underneath their warm, soft, blanket. She squeezed her eyes shut and pleaded silently to herself, 'Go away, go away, please just go away...'
