Chapter Two: Thunder Storms
May was slurping on a milkshake, eying Drew up uneasily as the two walked side by side through the city centre. Somehow the two groups had managed to converge again in the City Centre. Gary and Linnet had argued about something which led to the boys following the girls around so that they could seek revenge or something like that. Ash and Misty had attempted to get along, unlike Gary and Linnet. May still didn't like Drew much ever since the whole to do at the festival.
Dawn was walking silently beside Paul behind everyone else. Despite getting along perfectly well at the festival, they just didn't seem to have anything to talk about. Paul glanced up at the sky.
"It's going to rain," he told Dawn blankly. Dawn looked up at the sky too and nodded.
"I hope we get home before it does," she said, "I don't have an umbrella on me."
"Hayden does," Paul said, "He hates getting his hair wet."
"Really?" Dawn asked.
"Really," Paul replied, "It takes him half an hour just to do his hair in the morning."
"How do you know?" Dawn asked, glaring at Paul like she didn't believe him. Paul smirked at her.
"We timed him," Paul replied, "We went on a camping trip with him last year."
"Seriously?" Dawn exclaimed, "He does take that long?"
"Yeah," Paul said with a nod, "He's worse than Linnet."
"I didn't think it was possible," Dawn mumbled. Paul let out a light chuckle. He looked up at the sky once more and clicked his tongue.
"Here it comes," he muttered. Dawn was about to ask Paul what he meant when there was a deluge of water from the sky. Dawn yelped. She was pulled into a nearby shop by Paul. The two of them stood in the doorway for a few seconds before they realised the others had ran off in totally different directions. Dawn looked round at the shop they were in. It was a sports shop. She let out a sigh as she thanked that it wasn't an embarrassing shop. Being dragged into an underwear shop by Paul would never be good.
"Looks like the others have gone somewhere else," Paul told Dawn. Dawn nodded.
"Oh well," Dawn sighed. She rummaged in her bag for a few seconds before she pulled out an umbrella. She put it up and walked out into the rain. To say she was a girly girl, her umbrella was pretty normal, Paul thought as she beckoned her to him. He nodded and joined her under the umbrella. He took it off her seeing as he was the taller of the two and held it above them.
"You'll have my eye out otherwise," he told Dawn. She smiled at him.
"Wouldn't want that now, would we?" she asked. They walked down the high street, checking each store for their friends. No sign of them. Dawn let out a sigh as they came to the seventh shop where their friends weren't there.
"So why did you four come into the city centre?" Dawn asked Paul, hoping to spark some sort of conversation.
"I have no idea how I was drawn into it," Paul replied. He was too busy looking for his friends to look at Dawn while he answered. Dawn peered up at him. She never realised how handsome looking he was, it was strange. He was wearing his usual dark clothes: the turtle neck with the jeans and the jacket. However, today he wore normal trainers rather than Converse. He must have anticipated the wet weather.
"So the others are stalking us, not you?" Dawn asked.
"Probably," Paul said, "Hayden and Oak are that sad but Ketchum is too dense to think of it that way."
"You pick on them too much, you know," Dawn scolded.
"I am Paul Shinji," Paul replied, "It's sort of my job."
"So why don't you pick on me?" Dawn asked, glaring daggers at Paul.
"I do try," Paul admitted, "But you seem immune to it."
"Really?" Dawn said, "That's weird."
"Perhaps I haven't hit the right nerve yet," Paul suggested, "I'll try harder in the future, Troublesome."
"Troublesome?" Dawn asked, "Who's that?"
"It's you," Paul replied. Dawn grabbed the umbrella off of Paul and walked off with it, leaving Paul in the rain. He smirked.
"My name is Dawn," she told him.
"Troublesome," he corrected.
"DAWN!"
"Troublesome."
"DAWN!"
"…Troublesome."
"I hate you, you jerk!" Dawn yelled. Paul shrugged. He caught up with her but didn't attempt to get back under the protection of the umbrella just in case she attacked him with it. She was glaring at him. "I bet you think you're so cool."
"I don't think, I know I am," Paul replied, cocking an eyebrow at her. Dawn's glare turned into a scowl.
"Jerk," Dawn muttered. The two of them walked a little further without saying anything else until there was a flash of lightening. Dawn let out a shriek and quickly put the umbrella down. It was folded up and back in her bag before Paul could ask what she was doing. Thunder boomed loudly above them.
"A storm," Paul mumbled, "This can't be good. Hayden is scared of thunder. He'll be in hysterics. We should-"
Paul didn't get to finish that sentence because he was being dragged roughly to the nearest shelter by Dawn. She clung onto his arm tightly even when they were underneath something. Paul dusted the water from his hair.
"Smooth, Troublesome," he told her, "Real, smooth."
"Oh shut up," Dawn squeaked, holding his arm tighter. Paul winced at the pain. She shut her eyes as there was another flash of lightening. She squeaked at the same time. Paul pulled his arm from her grasp. She was beginning to shut off his circulation. She opened her eyes and looked at him in a pleading sort of way. Paul looked back at her for a few seconds wondering what she wanted. He knew how to cope with Drew (i.e. dose him up with alcohol and shut him in his room until it was over) but Dawn seemed to be different. She was just staring at him like she was going to burst into tears any second.
Paul rolled his eyes and pulled her into his body. She automatically snapped her arms round his waist and dug her head into his chest. Paul found this a little unsettling but comfortable. She let out faint squeaks as there were more lightening flashes but she didn't seem bothered about the thunder. He understood. She was scared of the lightening not the thunder. Wow, even when she was scared she was braver than Drew. Drew would have resorted to digging a tunnel by now, just so he could hide but here was Dawn outside in the rain while it thundered. Paul found he couldn't tease her like he would have wanted. She wouldn't listen to him anyway. He pulled her closer to him slightly.
"It should be over soon," he told her as a way of reassuring her, "So don't worry."
"Thanks," she stuttered, "Sorry. I'm just…"
"No, it's fine," Paul replied, "I don't mind people being scared of stuff as long as they're acting decently."
"Decently?" Dawn asked.
"Hayden has been know to do some very… odd things," Paul replied, "Such as building a pillow fort, locking himself in the loo, digging a hole to hide in."
"Digging a hole?" Dawn asked, peering up at Paul. Paul smirked and nodded.
"Camping trip," he told her. Dawn smiled but it was cut short by another flash of lightening. She soon returned to burying her head in Paul's jacket. "At least you're easily sorted. I doubt holding Drew like this would help any."
"So you… want to hold Drew like this?" Dawn said. Her voice was slightly muffled by Paul's jacket but Paul could hear her perfectly. "How sweet."
"We have dog piled him before," Paul replied, ignoring her, "That was fun."
"You say that," Dawn said, "But actually you were disappointed."
"Really?" Paul asked in an almost bored tone.
"Because Ash and Gary were in the way," Dawn went on, "You didn't have Drew to yourself."
"Because I'm so much in love with Drew, ha ha," Paul scoffed, "You're so funny."
"You do like shoes," Dawn said. Paul blinked a few times. That's what she meant about him being a 'shoe guy' at the festival. He chuckled.
"I've just got that," he admitted. Dawn giggled. Paul stroked her back absentmindedly for a few seconds before he realised what he was doing.
"Stop it, Paul," he thought to himself, "Stop with the hormones and do something Paulish. Come on."
"You…" Paul started but found his mind went blank. Dawn looked up at him with wide eyes. She was expecting him to go on and say something. He felt himself panicking. He had to say something. Anything. "Yousmellnice."
"Pardon?" Dawn asked, genuinely not hearing what he said.
"I said, you smell… nice," Paul said. Dawn looked at him oddly.
"I smell nice?" she repeated. Paul nodded slowly. "That's… nice of you, I guess. Creepy but nice."
"My brain went blank," Paul admitted before he could stop himself, "I was going to insult you."
"That's what you do," Dawn agreed, "You going to tell me how pretty my eyes are and how good my complexion is while you're 'insulting' me?"
Paul shot her a glare but it sort of back fired. Her eyes were fairly pretty and her complexion was perfect.
"I hate you," he mumbled. Dawn giggled again.
"Well you'll hate me more in a second," she said, "You do know that the storm lifted about two minutes ago, right?"
Paul looked around wildly to find that she was correct. The rain had lightened up and the sky was slightly brighter, though still grey. Almost mechanically, Paul let go of Dawn. She jumped to the side, laughing at him. Paul shot her a glare again but it was no use. She was doubled up laughing. Paul let out a sigh. There was no use fighting this.
"Just get your umbrella up and let's find the others," Paul snapped. Dawn nodded while still laughing. She dug out her umbrella once again and they were soon back to walking in the rain. Paul held the umbrella once again but this time Dawn hooked arms with him. He glanced down at her. "You're just making good use of this now, aren't you?"
"Of course," Dawn said, "I've never seen you so flustered before. I wished I had got it on film."
Paul looked ahead for a few seconds. Seriously? This girl thought about blackmail? She knew exactly how to tease him and make him want to kick and scream. How did he not know about her before now? She was brilliant.
"We'll be going to the cinemas tomorrow," Paul stated, causing Dawn to look up, "If you want, it can be your turn for stalking us."
"Is that an invitation?" Dawn asked.
"Two o'clock," Paul told her, "At the mall."
"OK," Dawn said with a nod, "Maybe we'll see you there, but if we're better at the stalking thing than you then you probably won't see us."
Paul looked at her. She was smiling at him. He felt like saying something else but he didn't have time to because there was a loud yell of 'Dawn' from down the High Street. The two teens tore their eyes off of each other and looked straight at the other three girls. Dawn unhooked herself from Paul and ran to meet them. Paul let out a sigh. He watched her talk to her friends for a few seconds.
This was going to be harder than he first thought.
Well that was it. So what are the girls going to do now? Why is Drew so scared of thunderstorm? And how will Paul get Dawn to like him? Hmm… More answers will be revealed in the next chapter! Please review!
