Chapter Five: Barbeque
"Barbeque," Gary told Linnet slowly, "You know. Bring a few beers, get some meat on the q and share a few laughs?"
"I'm not buying it," Linnet said, folding her arms over her chest. Gary rubbed his face in annoyance.
"There's nothing dodgy about this," Gary snapped, "It's just a simple barbeque between friends."
"We're friends?" Linnet asked.
"I know, came as a shock to me too," Gary replied, rubbing his head, "So you in or not? The girls have already said yeah."
"Really?" Linnet asked, curious to why they hadn't said anything to her.
"I told them I'd ask you," Gary explained, "So what do you say?"
"Fine," Linnet said, "I'll come."
"Really?" Gary asked, "Wow, I was expecting to have to grovel."
"You're such an idiot," Linnet scolded Gary. He rolled his eyes.
"Just be there," he snapped, "They'll be some other people there so don't think I'll have to put up with you all night."
"Fine, whatever," Linnet replied before she walked off, leaving Gary stood looking dumbfounded after her.
"Man is she a complicated woman," he muttered angrily before he walked in the opposite direction of Linnet. "Wait. I didn't even tell her when it was… She's not coming after all."
"Cheer up Linnet," May said to their aqua haired friend as they walked up to the front door of Gary Oak's house. Linnet was in a bad mood having been dragged to this worthless party. She glanced at her cousin for a few seconds until she let out a sigh.
"Fine," Linnet said, "But let me warn you about all this."
"What do you mean?" Misty asked with a annoyed tone. Linnet thought about how to word this.
"There will be people in here who will like to have a few too many beers than they can take," Linnet explained, "So if you feel uncomfortable around them, come and find me. OK?"
"OK!" the other three agreed. Slowly Linnet knocked on the front door. It swung open a few seconds later to reveal Drew with a bottle of beer in his hand.
"Oh, hi…" Drew said slowly, "Who invited you?"
"Move it Hayden," Linnet snapped, "Before my shoe finds its way somewhere painful."
"Fair enough," Drew said quickly, jumping out of the way. He let the four girls walk into the house before he closed the door. He then led them through to the garden where there was a large crowd of people chatting and drinking.
Dawn gulped at the site of it all. There were people drinking green bottles of beer. Some were swimming in Gary's impressive swimming pool. Others were too busy eating each other's mouths in various parts of the garden. Club music blasted out from the house while meat cooked on the barbeque. She was too young for this sort of thing.
She walked backwards into some one.
"Please let it be Paul," she thought but as she turned around she realised it wasn't Paul. It was one of the tough guys from school. They eyed her carefully.
"Hey, aren't you that weird girl from my art class?" the guy asked.
"FYI," Linnet snapped, coming to Dawn's rescue, "She's my cousin, so back the hell off."
"Oh, hey Linnet," the guy greeted Linnet before walking off. Dawn gulped again as she looked at her cousin.
"Try to be careful," Linnet warned. Dawn nodded.
"Oh great," Misty said, "A pool. Don't mind if I do."
"They call that cooking on the barbeque?" May asked, pointing at the three guys stood at the large metal cans. She walked off towards the barbeques while Misty ran over to the poolside. Dawn glanced at Linnet but found that Linnet had disappeared. Dawn felt panicked suddenly. She was alone at a teen party with no clue on what to do.
"You lost or something?"
Dawn turned round to face a tall yet cool looking boy. He smiled kindly at Dawn for a few seconds.
"I erm… lost my cousin and friends…" Dawn replied. The guy nodded.
"Why not hang with me and my friends?" the guy asked. Dawn looked around before she nodded slowly.
Paul stepped into the living room about three hours later. He had been mingling for a while before he had got bored and disappeared upstairs to get out of the way of snogging couples and the rubbish music.
He happened to come across a gang of three guys who were in howls of laughter over something.
"Hey, Paul," one of them called him over. Paul knew the guy to be called something like Richard or something and walked over to see what was so funny. "There's such a dumb girl walking round."
"Really?" Paul asked.
"Yeah, didn't touch a drop of alcohol, just drank pepsi so we slipped vodka into her drink when she wasn't looking," Richard laughed, slapping his knee like it was the best thing in the world. Paul looked at the guy next to Richard. It was Lucas.
"Now she's as high as a kite," Lucas went on, "Hilarious."
"She's not so bad looking either," Richard said in a more serious tone, "Blue hair, blue eyes. I wonder if she'll put out later."
"Wait," Paul snapped, "Blue hair? Like dark blue?"
"Yeah," Richard said, "Has yellow clips in her hair. Nice innocent look if you ask me."
Paul rolled his eyes and left the room as casually as he could. He wanted to punch those guys so much for getting Dawn, yes he knew exactly who they'd picked on, drunk.
He found her dancing in a floaty way outside. He had taken off her shoes and her jacket and was just sort of twirling round. Paul watched her for a few seconds. Even when she was drunk she moved so gracefully.
"Hey, pretty," someone called, "You wanna come and have a little dance with me?"
Paul walked up to Dawn. Thankfully she was wearing shorts, he noted as he looked around. He picked her up over his shoulder, turning to the guy who had just spoken.
"This one's mine," Paul told the guy. The guy just shrugged and went onto the next girl that walked past.
Paul carried Dawn through the house to various cat calls and dog whistles. He took her upstairs and placed her on the bed he'd claimed for the night. Dawn giggled at him as she rolled onto her front.
"Your hair smells nice," she said. Paul smirked before he pulled the duvet over her.
"You need to sleep," he told her.
"But me not sleepy," she replied, "I want to dance."
She began to wiggle between the covers as if she was dancing to the music. She rolled over a few times before pushing her hands out of the covers and began to wave them around. Paul grabbed her wrists, stopping her instantly.
"Sleep," he told her, "You need to sleep."
"OK," she replied weakly. She recalled her arms and closed her eyes. Paul let out a sigh. Stupid blue haired girl getting so drunk she has to be looked after. Paul glanced at her to find she was looking at him. "Me no sleepy. Me wants Paulie."
"Paulie?" Paul asked, cracking a grin, "I thought I was Sir Rudeness."
"Paulie is mine," Dawn muttered with a wide smile on her face, "You can have Sir Rudeness."
She sat up suddenly. She flung her arms round Paul's neck. She kissed his cheek before she kissed his lips.
Paul froze. She was kissing him. She was actually kissing him. He moved his arms round her waist. But she was drunk. She had no idea what she was doing.
"Shut up, stupid hormones," Paul mentally cursed, "Stop it. She's vulnerable. Stop it."
Slowly he inclined his head to the right and kissed her back.
Dawn woke in the morning with a headache beating on her head. She opened her eyes to the unfamiliar room and slowly sat up. The moment she began to sit up she noticed the arm around her waist. She froze. She was in bed with someone. She couldn't remember going to bed. She couldn't remember who she went to bed with. Her hands flew down to her shorts. She was still clothed. She let out a sigh. Not to find out who she was with.
Slowly she turned and looked at who ever it was she was in bed with. Paul was still fast asleep next to her.
Paul? Really? No way. Why would Paul be with her? What had happened between them? She couldn't even remember him at the party. Was he even there?
His eyes opened slowly. He glanced groggily at Dawn before he slumped back in his pillow.
"What time is it?" he asked. Dawn looked around for a clock. There was one on the bedside cabinet. It read five am.
"Five," Dawn replied as calm as she could manage.
"Go back to sleep," Paul moaned. Dawn titled her head to the side. Paul opened his eyes again and glared at her. "Sleep."
"Erm… What are you doing in bed with me?" Dawn asked.
"You started crying when I tried to leave," Paul replied, yawning at the end of the sentence. He sat up and rubbed his eyes. "So I stayed."
"And we… we…"
"You kissed me," Paul told her blankly. Dawn blushed red. "But that's as far as you got."
"Sorry," Dawn said quickly.
"Not at all," Paul shrugged off, "You're not a bad kisser."
"This is so embarrassing," Dawn said suddenly, rubbing her cheek, "I don't remember anything. Why can't I remember anything?"
"Someone spiked your drink," Paul explained, "When I found you, I decided to look after you."
"Thank you," Dawn said.
"Now will you go back to sleep?" Paul asked, "I'm tired."
"I never figured you for a deep sleeper," Dawn giggled as she pulled the covers back over her arms. Paul shrugged.
"How's your head?" he asked.
"A little painful," Dawn replied honestly.
"Do you feel sick?" he asked. Dawn shook her head carefully. Paul nodded. "Sleep then."
"OK," Dawn agreed. She closed her eyes and tried to go back to sleep but there was something in the awkwardness of her situation and the continuous banging of her headache that made that impossible. She kept her eyes closed.
Suddenly Paul pulled her into his body. Dawn looked at him in surprise. He rolled onto his back and pulled dawn with him so that she was now using him as a pillow. She smiled and closed her eyes once more.
"Don't wake me up until ten at the earliest," he told her, "Twelve would be preferable."
"Aye, captain," she replied. They both drifted off into a peaceful slumber.
Paul jumped awake a few hours later at the sound of someone yelling at Gary. How did he know it was Gary? Because of what the girl was saying.
"How could you lose my cousin, Gary? Are you a total idiot?"
Linnet, Paul thought as he slowly got up. Dawn was sleeping soundly once again. Deciding it would be best to leave her asleep, Paul climbed out of bed and walked to the door.
"I didn't see her at all apart from when she was dancing outside," Gary replied, "And that was only for a few seconds."
"You're such a jerk! She left her bag here! How am I going to find her?" Linnet was yelling. She sounded worried and angry at the same time. Paul walked out of the bedroom and went to his friend's aid. Gary was in the kitchen with Linnet yelling at him. Misty, strangely enough, was sat at the breakfast bar. Paul smirked as he leant on the cupboards.
"Look, I can phone people to see if they know where she is," Gary said, "I thought she'd gone home with you."
"I thought she had as well," Linnet replied, "But there was only May and some other random girl in my house when I woke up."
"Talking of random girls," Paul piped up, "Hayden asleep in the bath tub again."
"How do you know?" Gary asked.
"I heard him snoring on the way here," Paul replied. Linnet turned to Paul.
"Dawn's missing," she said hurriedly, "I have no idea where she is. You've got to help me find her."
"Try upstairs, third door on the right," Paul told her, "Thanks to some guys, I got the great job of babysitting your cousin last night."
"Oh thanks goodness," Linnet said, putting her hand on her heart, "Thank you Paul. Thank you so much."
"It's nothing," Paul said, "It wasn't like she was any trouble… Once I got her off me."
Linnet and Misty glanced at each other before they stared at Paul. Gary was smirking at his friend.
"Which base did you get to?" Gary asked. This cause Gary to be whacked round the head by both Linnet and Misty. Paul smirked as he friend got beat up by the two females.
"I didn't," Paul replied, "Unlike you, Oak, I was the perfect gentleman."
"That worries me slightly," Linnet said. Paul turned to Misty.
"What are you doing here?" he asked her. Misty blinked a few times before she let out a laugh.
"Ash almost drowned in the pool," she replied with a slight blush, "So I stayed here to make sure he was OK."
"Why does that not surprise me? Any of it," Paul stated. He stretched while Misty glared at him. While he was stretching, Dawn walked into the room. She glanced round at her cousin, then her orange haired friend.
"What are you two doing here?" she asked.
"Looking for you!" Linnet roared, "Because you disappeared."
Dawn put her hands over her ears and flinched. Gary and Misty did the same.
"Not so loud," Gary hissed, "My head will explode."
"That's not a complete loss," Linnet told him with a haughty look. Dawn glanced at Paul. He was stood watching the conversation between Linnet and Gary with his mouth slightly open. Slowly he brought his hand to his face and rubbed his eye. Obviously Paul was not a morning person. Dawn smiled at him.
"Thanks for looking after me last night," she told him, "It was really sweet of you."
"No problem," Paul said, "Now watch this."
"It's taken you this long to come up with something?" Dawn asked, titling her head to the side. Paul glanced at her and shrugged.
"I'm not a morning person," he told her before going on to say a little louder, "It's not like Carrot Top was French kissing Ketchum all night unlike Gary and that girl, Ursula."
Linnet and Gary froze mid argument. Slowly Gary stared at Paul, confusion written all over his face. Linnet's eyes narrowed before she let out a growl.
"You're all jerks," she snapped, "Come on Misty and Dawn. Let's go home."
With that she stormed out of the kitchen. Misty and Gary turned to Dawn and Paul in disbelief and confusion. Slowly Misty slid off her chair and walked out of the kitchen to catch up with Linnet. Dawn turned to Paul and smirked at him.
"Very cruel," she said. She leant forwards and kissed him on the cheek. "Thanks again, Paul."
"Any time," he replied, rubbing his eye again.
"That an offer, Paul?" Gary asked, smirking.
"Don't you wish," Dawn replied with a wink before she walked out of the kitchen after her friends.
"So why did you make me kiss Ursula?" Gary asked, "Couldn't have picked a nicer girl?"
"You'll see a method in my badness," Paul replied with a yawn, "For now, I'm going back to bed."
"See you at lunch time," Gary waved as Paul left the kitchen. Once Paul was gone, Gary let out a laugh. "He's such a light weight but that's a good thing."
So Monday is the next update. Please review me!
