I don't own the show of Halfway across the galaxy and turn left, but since no one spoke about it in years I've decided to write this harmless story just for the entertainment and not for money.
This show use to be such a good show until it was finished years later and since but i just seen the show itself and well it was good. Halfway Across the Galaxy and Turn Left is a 1985 novel by Australian children's author Robin Klein which also became a children's television series.
Half way across the galaxy; X's first love.
The novel tells the tale of the planet Zyrgon, ruled by the galactic police called The Law-Enforcers.
The Chief of the Law-Enforcers were after Mortimer, who has cheated the government lottery for the 27th time in a row.
His family is governed by the youngest daughter, 10-year old X, who wants to save her father from the detention centre.
The family also includes Mother, who would rather design clothing and leave all worries to her daughter X. The oldest sister Dovis is a 15 year old cosmic flier who writes poetry and levitates. The youngest is a boy genius, Qwrk who is a professor at age 5.
X is the lead character: a stressed girl who has to balance between strange Earth customs such as school and her duty to take care of her family.
Zyrgonians have special powers such as levitation, simulations, and kinetics. They love gambling and live on an ultra-modern and dystopian planetoid.
Eversince X/Charlotte decided to leave Zyrgon and go with her friend Jenny back to earth, the first couple of years in Australia had been the best for the Jackson family, her father Mortimer's restaurant had become a big success, flourishing like a flower in the east and the business was already running smoothly and X's mother Renee's work in fashion design has never been the more popular one in Australia.
Most of all they were able to obtain passports and documents made so the whole family can stay in Belwood as Australian citizens thanks to the help of Jenny and Colin Roland who showed them how to get passports.
Now X is enjoying the new life in Belwood, adopting her new name Charlotte.
She spent most of her time having fun with her friends Jenny and Colin Roland whilst Dovis, who has taken the name Astrella and her boyfriend David were off to a new college in Brisbane to study dancing and poetry, in their spare time they've spent it studying and sometimes making out under the trees in their sacred spot, which Dovis has become accustomed to since reading so many books and magazines about kissing and relationships.
Qwrk/George on the other hand was all the more become quite a musician for his age at 9 years old and he continues his genius ways as he did back on Zyrgon, but keeps it to a low profile so not to attract any unwanted attention. Although he does learn to understand why Judy walks with him as he learns about the basics of girls having crushes on guys and so he treats her like a friend, learning about her backgrounds and teaching her about the wonders of science whilst she teaches him about having fun and using music to impress girls who might like his music and more.
But now a 13 year old girl, X's feelings for Colin were somewhat stirring inside her as she suddenly feels like she's growing close to him over the past years and she doesn't know why, like sometimes when she sees him make a pass in a game of soccer striking a goal before he sees her, she suddenly grows rosy in the cheeks and looks down on her feet.
It was on a school day that when Jenny and X were walking home from high school, Jenny noticed that X was acting a bit strange when she usually sees her brother Colin around and so she decides to bring up the subject.
"X is there something bothering you?" she asked
"Not that I know of, I mean I'm completely fine. Why did you ask?" asked X.
"Well you've been a bit odd lately whenever my brother Colin is around and I've noticed that you've been looking yourself in the mirror once as if to look your best for a boy or something." said Jenny.
"Oh, umm its nothing really. Don't you earth girls check how you look when ever?" asked X.
"Only if one is going out to see a boy that they fancy.." Jenny stopped mid sentence as she realised the obvious and then she continued.
"Wait, does my best friend have a crush on my brother?"
"No" X blushes before she continues. "I mean he is a nice guy and he seems quite... Quite-."
"Handsome?"
X couldn't keep her secret for long so she went clean. "Yeah, I guess you could say that he is."
"OH my god, you do have a crush on him." Jenny said ecstatically, looking behind her before she brought X to a nearby corner so they could talk in private. "So since when did you have such feelings for him?"
"For a while. He once said to me in comment, that I looked beautiful for a person from half way across the galaxy, and I did comment on how good a runner he was on track. He smiles when he looks at me like i'm some sort of special crystal on Zyrgon."
"Well then it means he has feelings for you too X, he's probably thinking of asking you out."
"Then what should I do if he asks me?" asked X.
"If he does ask you out, I believe you should think about it and then answer. at least see where your feelings lie. but if he doesn't then you should ask him first, take charge of the situation and ask him to go out for a soda or something." said Jenny.
Encouraged by Jenny's words of wisdom, X looked on her best friend and then spoke.
"You're right, I'll go ask him if he wants to hang out and go ice skating."
"Good for you X." Jenny said, giving X a pat on the back for good luck before she went off to find Colin.
It was almost a couple of hours when the lunch bell came and X was able to find Colin at the bench, so she went to the bench where Colin was. Colin looked up and smiled when he saw her come, waving to her he spoke.
"Hey X, i mean Charlotte." X gave a wave back as Colin moved aside on the bench to let X sit down with him as she approached.
"Hi Colin, and you can use my real name X when no one is about. So how are you doing?" she asked.
"I'm great thanks and how are you?" said Colin, starting up the conversation.
"I'm feeling good, the new school had been taking a long time like the ones I use to have back on Zyrgon." said X.
"Really? well I guess my school is not so different after all." Colin replied whilst he checked his bags.
"Nope." X said, shaking her head. She paused a moment before she turned to Colin.
She then got the courage to ask him out. "Colin, I came to you because I wanted to ask you something."
"Oh, ok then what did you want to ask?" asked Colin turning himself to face her.
"I...well I was thinking about going Ice skating after school and I wondered that if you're not busy, you'd like to join me? I never been before so i thought we could go skating across the rink." said X.
"Like on a date?"asked Colin, X suddenly blushed for a moment, looking down and then up to him, she answered. "Yes."
"Oh we'll I haven't got much to do after school so, it sounds good to me. Its funny cos I was going to ask you first, but since you brought it up where can I meet you?" asked Colin. X thought about it before she answered Colin.
"At the gate around four. your mum can drive us to the Ice rink and we can go skating together." said X.
"Yeah, it sounds like a plan to me. maybe we could grab a couple of slushies whilst we're there." said Colin.
X nodded in agreement with a small grin at him. Without thinking she leaned into him and she found herself planting a small kiss on his cheek.
Colin was taken by surprise by what X did, even she was left in surprise by her action that she turned affront, blushing red.
Later on after school
4:00pm, when the bell rang for the end of High school Colin went out the door with his friends before he said goodbye to them.
Once they were gone, he waited for X to come out through the doorway so they can go ice skating together, Colin waited for about a few minutes before X and Jenny came out through the doorway.
When he saw X, Colin called out her other name Charlotte.
Turning her head in response, she drew a small grin upon seeing Colin waiting for her.
She waved her hand back to him after he waved first. Once she approached him as he stepped up towards her, they held hands whilst Jenny went on to her mum's car which was parked near the front gate. Jenny went into the front seat whilst X and Colin rode in the back, Colin asked his mum if she could drop him and Charlotte off at the ice rink, saying he wanted to take Charlotte ice skating.
Mrs Roland; "Do you have enough money for the session Colin?"
Colin; "Yes, and We will be spending almost a couple of sessions in the ice rink, you can pick us up then."
Mrs Roland; "Alright then, you two had better be good in the Ice rink ok? and Colin stay with Charlotte."
X; "He will Mrs Roland. And if you can let my mum know where I am, I would appreciate it."
Mrs Roland; "Alright. I'll let your mum know that you went Ice skating with Colin."
Starting up the car, Mrs Roland took Colin and Charlotte/X off to the Ice rink.
It was only about thirty minutes down the road before the car had reached the car-park by the large Ice rink facility.
When Mrs Roland dropped them off, X said goodbye to Jenny at the window.
Jenny even wished her luck on her date before the car moved off from the car park, leaving only Colin and X to walk off to the Ice rink centre together.
When they got to the front doorway, Colin opened the door stepping aside for X to enter before him. Whilst they walked, X asked him why did he let her go in first.
Colin explained his action; "Its a gentleman's custom to allow a lady to enter the doorway first, its how some people on earth do things. I've seen it done in romantic films and I wanted to know what it was like."
"Oh ok, well it was very nice of you to do that for me." X said, blushing a bit as they approached the reception desk.
When Colin came to the reception he spoke to the receptionist present, asking for a couple of hours on the Ice rink and two pairs of Ice skates for himself and for his date.
The receptionist granted him the request and Colin paid for the session before receiving the tickets for the ice skates and a receipt for the session.
Afterwards Colin turned to X and the two of them went off through the hall to another door which linked to the huge Ice rink where a few skaters were sliding across the ice and it was cold in the great hall.
Colin went to the information desk and handed the tickets to the staff member there, he told him his shoe size and X's shoe size before the staff member turned and went to pick up two jackets and trousers for them to wear on the ice as well as two pairs of ice skates.
The staff member returned with the two jackets and trousers for Colin and X, he went back again to retrieve the Ice skates whilst Colin took the Jackets and trousers to X. when he brought them over, he gave X a pair and directed her to the changing rooms along the corridor, which X went after she was given the jacket and trousers to change into.
After at least ten minutes of getting dressed into her warm jacket and trousers, X stepped out of the changing rooms all wrapped up for her first Ice skating session.
She met with Colin before they sat down to get their skates on, strapping on their straps.
Once their ice skates were on, Colin led X to the side entrance of the Ice skating rink, where loads of Ice skaters gliding across the cold, icy surface of the rink.
Standing on her skates and trying to balance on them, X was most surprised to see all the skaters gliding so easily across the ice as she came to the entrance to the ice grounds.
Once at the entrance, Colin turned to X and then extending his hand for her to take and hold on to, he said to her. "So X, Shall we step on the Ice and see if a Zyrgonian can skate on the Ice?"
X was a little nervous at first as she never been ice skating before, but she was all ready to try something new. She reached for Colin's hand, and Colin stepped on to the ice, balancing his stance as he took X up over the short ledge and by the second she was on the ice.
But the second she stepped on the ice, X's feet under her started to slip on the ice and she had to grab onto Colin for support. "You ok?" Colin asked, X looked up to Colin's eyes.
She nodded, seeing his good looking eyes as he smiled.
"Its quite hard for your first try isn't it?" asked Colin.
"Yes it is, especially when you're trying to walk on it." said X.
Both giggled for a moment. When X stood herself up again, Colin led her on the ice, the two skated around in a circle at first, they looked into each other's eyes whilst they skated across the ice for a moment until X got the hang of skating but then had to use her powers to help her steady herself.
After a few minutes the two started holding hands together as they skated side by side.
They skated on for a while long until the bell rang and on the moment they stopped, X stood in front of Colin, looking up at his face for a short few seconds when she leaned in slowly moving close to Colin, who leaned forward into X/Charlotte as well.
It was at the moment they closed their eyes and their lips met, they shared their first kiss together on the cold ice. They stood kissing on the ice for a short time.
When they withdrew, X was left feeling like she was in a blissful moment.
She and Colin stood there for a short moment before she began to speak.
"I've never kissed a boy or a human before, does it feel any different to you?"
"It does feel so different, yet it feels so magical like kissing an angel in heaven." said Colin, which made X giggle in glee, dazed in the moment between her and Colin. She leaned in and kissed him again, this time softly and long before she withdrew from him and slid away from him, prompting him into chasing her across the ice rink.
By the time Colin caught up with X, catching her by the waist before he swung her around it was nearing the end of their session and they decided to head back to the side entrance.
After turning their Ice skates at the reception, Colin and X went over to the cafeteria to buy a strawberry and banana milkshake between them so they could savour its sweet flavour together in bliss. When the café lady appeared she looked on them. "Hello there, what can I get for you two?"
"Um could we have a strawberry and Banana flavoured milkshake, make it a large one between me, and my girlfriend." said Colin, gesturing to X, who smiled and giggled at Collin calling her his girlfriend.
The café lady raised her head in getting the idea, astonished by the young couple standing together before her, she spoke. "Ah young love huh, is this your first date?" X nodded in confirmation. The café lady was left impressed, giggling before she spoke. "Alright, well can I interest you in a medium strawberry and banana split sundae between you too? Half the price since its your first date."
Colin and X looked at one another, tempted by the offer before X responded to the offer.
"Sure, we'd love it and maybe two drinks of lemon juice to go with the sundae please?"
The Café drew a smile and then spoke. "Now you have got yourself a good deal, you two just wait here whilst I whip up the sundae and the drinks. I'll be right back." The Café lady then went off to arrange the sundae whilst Colin and X wait.
It was a short while before the cafe lady came back with the strawberry and banana split sundae.
"Here we go, one medium strawberry and banana split sundae and two lemon juice drinks for the two of you."
"Thank you." said X, taking up the two glasses whilst Colin took the sundae and brought it to one of the tables over seeing the whole Ice rink.
They took their spoons and dug into the Ice cream, taking each piece of Banana and putting it into their mouths they enjoyed the taste of the strawberry ice cream for the long moment. After a taking a few spoons full of Ice cream, X smiled at Colin who took a sip from his glass of lemon juice.
They spent the good hour of the afternoon enjoying their sundae with a lighthearted music playing in the background. By the time they finished, it was only an hour before closing time so Colin decided to call his mother and ask for her to pick them up from the Ice rink. They sat on one of the long chairs together and waited for a long half hour, holding each other's hands before they went outside and met with Mrs Roland, who came to the ice rink in the car to pick them up.
But it seems that Jenny is in the front seat, as she waved hello to them.
X waved back to her when the car stopped by the side of the road and Colin went to the car, opened the door to allow X to enter first before him.
X approached the car and stopped when she saw Colin hold the door for her, she looked to Colin, smiling before she went inside.
"Oh hey Charlotte." Colin's mother said when she turned to see X come into the car and greeted her.
"Hello Mrs Roland, thanks for the ride." said X.
"Not a problem, I'm glad that you enjoyed yourself at the Ice rink. How did you like skating across the ice?" asked Mrs Roland.
"It was very good Mrs Roland, We had a good time skating across the rink." said X. "Yeah, mom it was so much fun skating." Colin said, closing the door after getting into the car.
"Oh, that's Good to hear you and Colin had a good time together." said Mrs Roland.
Jenny turned around in the seat before she spoke.
"So Charlotte, did you and Colin have a good time sliding across the ice together?"
"Jen." Colin said, feeling embarrassed. But X assured him it was ok before she answered.
"Why yes Jenny it was most fun, I had a few falls but Colin was brave enough to catch me when I slipped off the Ice, he saved me a few times."
"Really? That's good to hear you're being a good gentleman Colin. Listen Charlotte, Jenny, Colin and I will be going out to get some dinner if you're interested in joining the party." said Mrs Roland.
"Sure, I'd be delighted to come and join the party." said X.
"Great then, well on the way over to this new restaurant I'll stop at the petrol station and call up the restaurant management and see if I can squeeze you into the group and you can have a seat next to Colin. But is it ok with your mother?" Mrs Roland said.
"I told her that I might be going out to dinner but I'll give her a call to make sure she knows where I am." said X.
"Good, then its settled." Mrs Roland said before starting the car and drove off to the local restaurant at the east corner of the town.
During the drive to the petrol station, Colin and X held hands together for a moment but took them back to wipe the sweat on their palms and to lock their hands together for another moment before Colin decided to put his arm around X's shoulder.
Seeing that Colin likes her very much, X leaned beside him to let his arm rest behind her shoulder for the whole ride until they came to a stop in the car park of the restaurant.
A long while after sunset, Mrs Roland dropped Colin and X off at the side of the street so that Colin can walk her to her house.
X opened the door and stepped out of the car before Colin followed her out the doorway and closed the door, he then told his mum that he won't be too long in getting home.
He took a stroll with X down the street but stopped at the gate. X turned to Colin, looking him in the eye and spoke. "Colin, I have to admit that I had such a good time."
"I agree, its been the most fun I've had in a while. X, I have to ask you something." said Colin.
"Sure you can ask me, what's on your mind?"
"On your old planet Zyrgon, how do you tell a person your feelings?"
"Oh well we just share our images through the kinetic mind beam that we use, but its complicated as you don't practice it in this planet. So I'd rather hear you say it in words just to be fair for the both of us, because you're such a handsome boy."
"Really?" asked Colin looking to X for a moment in curiosity and X simply answered.
"Yes, I mean you've been kind and charming to me and its been the best time living on this beautiful planet, and the truth is that there's a good chance that I have falling in love with you Colin." X stood there for a short moment before Colin smiled, moving close to her before he spoke. "Charlotte, X. You're the most amazing alien I've ever met and I too know that I've fallen in love with you too." X smiled so much that she went forward and kissed him, wrapping her arms around Colin's neck.
They embraced for a long moment of the special night.
Afterwards when the moment was past, Colin kissed X good night before she went inside with a dreamy smile on her face whilst Colin walked a little tall after holding her in his arms and kissing her.
The days went by, Colin and X grew up together and although they went to different Colleges in the world, they kept in touch for a few years until they reunited to their home for her sister Dovis' wedding to David. They were married in a chapel on the lakeside, it was the most beautiful event in their time.
On that day when Dovis threw the bouquet, it was X who caught it. After catching it she was so surprised that she'll be the next one to be married as part of the traditions of earth.
It was later on the couple of months after Dovis' wedding, Qwrk/George had announced to his family that he was getting married to his girlfriend Judy.
Having found out that George wasn't from planet earth after seeing his mind beam the first time, she separated from him for a while, keeping her distance from him as he knew that it might happen.
It was almost a few months before she had finally built up the courage to talk with Qwrk/George about who he really is.
She called him over to a cafe and they sat in a corner so that no one can hear them, it was where George had revealed his true name to Judy who was at first scared but she remembered that he did not mean any harm to her as she listened to the whole story. After hearing his explanation that he was from Zyrgon, Judy began to understand why his sister had wanted George/Qwrk to keep his talents a low profile as he'd be in danger of showing himself to the world.
So she having decided to resolve this, she promised Qwrk that she would keep this secret.
The following days the two shared a bond of trust which evolved into love which kept them together for three years.
Two whole months after his announcement, Qwrk got married to Judy in a private ceremony in Europe with X as their maid of honour and Colin as their best man.
Afterwards they went to the reception and it was where Colin made his move in proposing to X.
Colin brought X to the corner where he stood before her and spoke.
"X, I probably wish that there was any better place than this, however there is not so I stand here to make a proposal. I'm sure you're aware of our earth customs about being on grounds speaking marriage and I've been waiting to do this for almost a long time."
Colin paused for a moment to look upon the couples at the reception and thought how happy they were, X looked upon them for a moment when Colin turned back to her and then asked her. "Do you Love me X?" X turned back to Colin before she answered. Of Course Colin, I've loved you since our first date."
"Then would you do something for me?" asked Colin. "Anything at all Colin." X answered.
Colin looked down for a few seconds before he went down on one kneel and raising his head up to her, looked into her eyes and then made his proposal.
"Will you marry me?" That question was an unexpected one which made X draw tears as she smiled to him and then nodded her answer to him.
The following few years later.
After that, Qwrk had decided to take Judy to his home world in Zyrgon where she got to become a teacher whilst Qwrk had become one of its new scientists, aiding Hecla who had taken up leadership in Zyrgon.
Back on earth Colin and X got married at a private ceremony and then moved to New Zealand where they lived out their lives as loving parents of two boys.
They visited Zyrgon from time to time to see the new changes that developed on the planet which had become a Utopian society thanks to X and the two still lived happily ever after on Zyrgon and on Earth.
That's the end of the story, I wish that there was more to tell but this settles the end of a good series about five aliens who came to earth to live in temporary Exile but instead found a new home in the neighbourhood of Australia.
