Epilogue: Shimmering In The Moonlight
With four jugs of gasoline and several matches Sam and Dean lit up the second floor of the hotel and raced out just in time to escape the flames that were starting to burn up the main floor. The hotel burned up quicker and the whole building soon collapsed. Once it did, Dean and Sam got into the Impala and drove away, just as the police and firefighters arrived.
The fire was put out after five hours. What was left of the hotel as the sun rose into the sky was a scrap heap of charred wood and melted glass.
All was quiet after the firefighters, police, and the hotel survivors had left.
But as night fell that all changed. Not every spirit's body had completely burned in the fire. Not every spirit had moved on.
The dark spirits were gone, but some of the trapped ghosts had stayed behind. They clung onto what was left of the hotel courtyard.
The lingering spirits began pairing off and danced under the moonlight in celebration of their newfound freedom from the poltergeist and Joseph.
Frank stood on the sideline, scanning the small crowd for Evelyn. When he had realized he was dead he thought she would come to him, but she hadn't yet.
She can't have moved on without me, he thought, but he became less and less sure about this as the night went on.
As midnight rolled around Frank considered moving on alone, but then out of the crowd a beautiful woman in a red dress seemingly floated towards him.
Frank reached out for her with a hand, one that was not wrinkly, but as smooth as the day he had first met Evelyn.
The memory had faded with age, but seeing her again everything came back to him. Evelyn approaching him the same way as she was now, in the same fancy, flowing crimson dress. The location was even the same.
"Evelyn," Frank whispered.
She smiled and said, "Nice to see you again."
The words "Nice to meet you" echoed in Frank's mind.
Evelyn took Frank's hand and led him onto the ghostly dance floor.
Again, he flashed back to the same spot many years ago, when it was full of living, breathing people and there was a band playing in the background.
"I missed you," Frank told her and they began to dance circles.
She kissed him. "I missed you too."
Frank held her closer to him.
"Thank you," she said.
"For what?" he frowned.
"For setting me free," she answered.
Evelyn bowed her head.
"What's wrong?" Frank asked.
"I'm just sorry," she told him. "So sorry."
Frank was confused. "For what?"
"For helping him," she replied.
Frank understood. "It wasn't your fault. You were being controlled."
"But…I…I think I liked it," Evelyn admitted.
Frank put his head to hers. "It's over with. We can move on now. Together."
Evelyn pulled away. "I don't know if we will go to the same place."
Frank looked up to the sky then put his forehead back against hers. "Then we will stay here."
Evelyn shook her head. "Frank...no."
"It is settled," he told her. "If one of us can't go, then we both stay."
"What if we go crazy?"
"We have no one to harm here," Frank said.
Evelyn glanced around and nodded. "Okay. We will stay."
Frank spun her around and she laughed.
It echoed from the past, present, and future, into the night.
