Hello fellow Whovians! sorry for the one or two month break, I had a bit of writer's block and I had a bit of school work to do. I have this pet peeve that when I'm writing something, I have to stay one chapter ahead of what's posted soo...yeah. Anyway hopefully this long chapter makes up for that equally long wait.
Before we move on, there are some unasked questions that I would like to answer.
Number one: "why is the Doctor being such a wimp?" Well, these few chapters take place right after he looses Rose on Bad Wolf Bay. Like, a twenty-four hour time span after. So, he's doing a bit of "mourning" over her.
Number two: The reason why the Doctor goes all hysteric when Emmerson says "rule number one: the Doctor lies" is because, as you may have noticed, that sentence isn't spoken until series five or six. So when she says it, it's a paradox and therefore, she has to fix it. Please keep in mind that there is a reason as to why this story is called "The Daughter Paradox". ;)
There might be some OOC-ness going on with the Doctor in this chapter, just like in the last, but I think that this one might be a bit more OOC. Only because this is my first time writing about someone in hysteria, Yes, I know that's a major spoiler, but I had to tell you guys my alibi. So, if the Doctor is too OOC, please, PM me and let me know how to fix it so that way, it's more enjoyable to (you) the readers. Same goes for Rose, I'm not sure if I kept her in character either, so letting me know would be great.
that aside, please, enjoy the Daughter Paradox and let me know what you think!
Last time on The Daughter Paradox:
Emmerson saw the Doctor in his most vulnerable state, and it wasn't something one wanted to see at all.
"Doctor," Emmerson said worriedly, taking a step forward, "Are you alright?"
The Doctor nodded his head and said shakily, "Yes."
Emmerson wasn't fooled. "No you're not."
"Yes I am. I don't know why-" he protested, but Emmerson cut him off saying,
"Rule number one: the Doctor lies."
And that's when the Doctor broke.
Emmerson knew just what to do. She ran down the long corridors to Rose's room, only to smack into the door once she was there.
"I forgot that Dad had it locked at this time," Emmerson muttered to herself as she rubbed her forehead.
'Oh c'mon, girl,' thought Emmerson to the TARDIS, 'I know you may not recognize me know, but I am a big part of the Doctor's future.'
The TARDIS hummed in disbelief, Emmeron sighed.
'You see, I'm his daughter. I'm the daughter of the Bad Wolf and Oncoming Storm,' she admitted, 'And I'm trying to get them back to each other, they need me, the Doctor needs me. He needs you. I need you- I need you to open this door so that I can help my mum and dad,' Emmerson was nearly in tears now.
The feeling hopelessness surrounded her as she lowered her head.
'Fear not, child,' said a voice in Emmerson's head. She instantly recognized it as the TARDIS, 'I believe that you are the child of the Bad Wolf and the Oncoming Storm, and I shall help you. For if you are their child, then you are in my future as well.'
Emmerson heard the soft click of the door unlocking. She stood up and gave the TARDIS a large smile and said, "Thank you, ol' girl," and she opened the door to Rose's room and burst inside.
She looked around for the necessary items to bring the Doctor back to reality. On Rose's dresser she saw a hankie and some perfume.
Emmerson grabbed both and spritzed some of the perfume on the hankie, along with something else that she got from her inner coat pocket.
Once she was done she ran back out to the Doctor
The Doctor was on his knees, shoulders shaking and shuddering; slowly losing his sanity. No sounds, just whimpers, escaped his lips.
And it was truly a pitiful sight to see.
The Doctor heard footsteps of someone behind him. He didn't turn around, he didn't do anything, for that matter.
He then felt the gentle touch of a hand on his shoulder; he flinched.
"Doctor," said a soothing voice behind him. He knew the voice but it rang unfamiliar in his ears, "Come on Doctor, let's get you someplace where you can be comfortable."
The girl helped the Doctor up and guided him down the long corridors of the TARDIS.
The Doctor didn't know how the strange girl knew the TARDIS hallways so well, but he was so lost in hysteria, he didn't know much of anything.
As the two of them hurriedly walked down the hallways of the TARDIS, the Doctor began to chuckle darkly, slurring strings of incoherent words together, forming incomprehensible sentences.
"Keep yourself together, Doctor," said the voice beside him, as it continued to guide him down the long hallways.
Soon, the door TARDIS library was in sight and the Doctor was led through it and was seated on the couch.
"Here, Doc, take this," the voice said to him, handing him a handkerchief. He looked up to see the owner of the voice, it was a young girl that look strikingly familiar. He took the piece of cloth in his hands and looked at it, wondering what he was supposed to do, "It smells like Rose, go on, take a wiff."
And so the Doctor did as he was instructed, he put the handkerchief to his nose. It indeed did smell like Rose, and the scent calmed him, comforted him.
Suddenly, black spots appeared in the Doctor's vision, making it hard for him to see straight. He felt lightheaded and his ears were ringing. It was a chemical that made him feel like this. It began with a "C", but what was it?
The Doctor wracked his brain to remember, but it was hard when he was feeling so weak.
Blackness began to consume his sight and mind, but the word that he was looking for stood out like a light amongst the darkness.
Colorform.
And the darkness consumed the Doctor, and he was conscious no longer.
When the Doctor awoke, the first thing he noticed was that he had a splitting headache, the second thing he took into account was that there was a small tray that had a mug of tea with the word "Doctor" written in calligraphy on a small name card next to it.
He slowly got up into a sitting position, closing his eyes in pain as he did so. When he was up, he rested his elbows on his knees and head in his hands, fingers massaging his throbbing temples.
The Doctor heard the door to the library creak open and he winced in discomfort at the abnormally obnoxious sound.
"Oh good," said a, rather loud, familiar voice, "You're awake."
The Doctor cringed, "Oh, don't-don't do that." he shook his head slightly in pain.
"What's wrong?" asked Emmerson, none too quietly.
He tightly closed his eyes in pain and annoyance, and said in a whisper, "I have a very bad headache, and it hurts when any loud noise is made." The Doctor paused, realising something he lifted his head out of his hands, "Wait a minute, you Colorformed me!" he shouted, instantly regretting it. The Doctor pursed his lips, shut his eyes tightly, and moaned in uneasiness.
"Had no choice, and I wasn't going to hit you. I already attacked you once." Emmerson said the last part in jest.
"Had no choice?" Said the Doctor, "Why didn't you have a choice?"
" You were in hysteria, I had to do something." She said as she pulled up a chair and sat down, "Sorry about that, by the way. The headache, I mean. You hit you head pretty hard on the arm rest."
The Doctor let out a soft "Oh" as he rubbed the sore spot on his head.
"So, I brought you this," said Emmerson as she handed him an ice pack, "Figured it might help with the headache."
The Doctor nodded his head in thanks as he put the ice pack on his head.
"Doctor, can I ask you something?"
"Well I don't see why not," said the Doctor.
"While you were in hysteria, you said something about failing Rose, and I couldn't help but wonder, why do you think that?"
The Doctor sighed, "I just knew something was going to slip out sooner or later," he put the ice pack down on the little coffee table in front of him, "At one point, when she was traveling with me, I had asked her how long she was going to stay with me, Rose told me that she was going to stay with me forever. I took her all around the universe, flying amongst the stars." The Doctor chuckled, "We had so many wonderful adventures together.
"I had tried so hard, for her sake, to keep that forever promise. I had tried to keep her safe and sound, and when the Battle of Canary Wharf came, she was almost lost into the void. Luckily Pete, her 'father' in some sense, caught her and took her into the parallel world.
"I couldn't keep the forever. I had lost her to another dimension. And when I blew up a star just to say goodbye, we didn't have very long to talk, only two minutes. Rose had said to me that she loved me," The Doctor shook his head, "I couldn't even finish my sentence before the gap in the universes closed. And that wasn't the worst part."
"And what was?" asked Emmerson.
The Doctor sighed and said, "Finding out that she's pregnant with my child was the worst part."
Emmerson was taken aback at the statement, "So, you're not happy that she is going to have your child?"
"No, I am very happy that she is going to have my child," he chuckled and smiled a bit, "Our child more like it. I feel guilty for not being there for her at this time.
"And our child, he or she is ours and ours alone. Emmerson, if you can get her back to me like you said you would, I will be forever in your debt."
Emmerson smiled, the Doctor had no idea that he was talking about his child to his child. "I will bring her back to you Doctor."
"Thank you," he said.
"Now, why don't you try some of that tea, hmm? Might help with your headache."
The Doctor nodded, taking his eyes off of Emmerson.
He reached for the mug and took a sip of the tea. When the tea met his taste buds, he realized that it wasn't just anyone's tea, it was Rose's recipe. The one that he had missed oh so much.
The Doctor looked back to where Emmerson was sitting to ask her how she had gotten her hands on that recipe, but saw that she was nowhere in sight. He turned his head to look around until the Doctor heard the sound of a Police Box dematerializing.
"Clever girl."
Emmerson practically jumped out of the TARDIS ready for whatever may come.
"So where do you disappear to? Go see the Doctor?"
Except for that.
Even though Emmerson knew that Rose said it jokingly, she couldn't hide the fact that it was true.
"Oh my gosh," whispered Rose in disbelief, "You do, don't you?"
"Rose, sweetie," River consoled, "Please don't-"
"No! Don't you see?" Yelled Rose, "She could've taken me to the Doctor right away! But she didn't! What are you trying to do to me?" she directed at Emmerson, "See how far my trust for you goes? Testing me for something? Do you enjoy seeing me like this? Because I'll tell you one thing, missy, I am having a VERY hard time believing that you have gotten me out of the Parallel world, and I will NOT be risking the life of my child, just so you can give me false hope!"
Flecks of crimson appeared in Emmerson's darkening brown eyes, "Now you listen to me, Rose! I am not toying with you! I honestly want you and the Doctor to be together, but if I take you to him right now, not only will there be a paradox the size of Russia, but something horrible will happen and I cannot guarantee the safety of your child!
"Now, if you don't believe me that you are in your original universe, then take out your phone and call the Doctor." Rose blinked, "I would not be telling you this unless I was absolutely certain that I had gotten you back into your original universe. So don't you dare, think that I would lie to you about something as big as this."
Rose hesitated before taking out her phone and dialing the TARDIS number. She waited with bated breath as the phone range.
"Hello?" said a very familiar voice.
"Doctor?" Rose choked out.
"Rose? Is that you?" said the Doctor.
"Yeah, yeah it's me," she chuckled.
"How are you? Are you and the baby alright? Are you back from the parallel world?"
Rose was touched that the Doctor had remembered about the child that she carried, "Yeah, I'm fine, the baby and I are alright. This girl, Emmerson, brought me back."
"Isn't she a clever girl? Oh, I knew she could do it, there wasn't a doubt in my mind that she couldn't!" said the Doctor, joyfully, "So when and or where are you? I will come and get you right now!"
Rose looked at Emmerson for help, Emmerson shook her head. Rose realized that there was a specific time and place where they would reunite and only Emmerson and River knew where it was.
"Ya know Doctor, that might not be the best idea," said Rose.
"What?" questioned the Doctor.
"There's a specific time and place where we're supposed to reunite, apperently, and only Emmerson knows it. I don't know how many tries it'll take to get to you, she flies the TARDIS almost as badly as you do." Rose laughed.
"Oi!" Emmerson and the Doctor said, almost, in unison.
Rose chuckled at that, "I think it's best that I go, I don't know how long we're going to be here."
"Alright Rose, I'll see you later," said the Doctor.
"Oh, Doctor!" said Rose.
"Yes?"
"When I see you, I want you to finish that sentence, mister."
Rose heard the Doctor chuckle on the other end of the line, "Okay Rose. I will, I promise. Goodbye."
"Goodbye." Rose hung up the phone as she tried to hold back tears of joy and sadness, "Oh, Emmerson, I'm so sorry I doubted you," she apologized, "It was wrong of me to assume that you could just take me back without something catastrophic happen, will you forgive me?"
"Always," Emmerson responded with a nod.
And Rose pulled Emmerson into a hug.
Emmerson stiffened and shot a worried glance at Violet, who shared the same look of panic.
'Well, the universe isn't falling apart, so I guess it's okay.' and Emmerson hugged Rose back.
It felt good to hug Rose, it felt good to hug in general, she loved getting hugs and giving them.
Rose pulled away and Emmerson saw that Rose looked pale.
"Rose are you okay?" she asked.
Rose nodded her head, "Yeah, just some nausea.
"Alright, everyone into the TARDIS," said River, "You aswell, Brian."
The short, yet lanky man looked shocked, "What, in there?" he said, "You all must be really close if you don't mind being squished."
The group started filing into the TARDIS, except for Emmerson, who stood at the door.
"Don't worry Brian, it's roomier than you think, come on." She coaxed him, motioning with her hand to follow.
Brian was hesitant, but he let Emmerson guide him into the TARDIS.
He gasped as Emmerson closed the door.
"What?" he cried, "How-how is this possible?" and he ran back outside.
The four women chuckled and shared a knowing glance. They knew what he was doing, Brian was circling the TARDIS trying to figure out how it was possible.
Brian came back in, panting, and said, "It's bigger on the inside."
Emmerson was smiling like a madman, "Now I know why he likes to hear that!" She exclaimed, trying (and failing) to not jump up and down in her excitement, "It's brilliant!"
"I'm pretty sure that we've, at our own separate times, have come to terms with the fact that it's bigger on the inside," said Violet.
"Yeah," Rose agreed, "But this wasn't as much of a shock as finding out that I was pregnant." She gently rubbed the small swell of her belly.
"Wait, you're pregnant?" said Brian, "Gee miss, if I'da known, I wouldn't have had my boys attack you, sorry ma'am."
"It's alright, Brian, there was no way you could've known."
"Sounds like he's not a real gangman." said Violet in a sing-songy voice under her breath. River elbowed her in the rib-cage, "Ow."
"Brian, could you give me the address to Al Capone's headquarters?" asked River.
"Uh, sure?" said Brian.
Emmerson chuckled at them, but her attention soon shifted back to Rose as she clutched her chest and gasped for breath.
"Rose, are you alright?" cried Emmerson.
Rose nodded, but she cried out again, "Okay, so maybe I'm not."
"C'mon Rose," said Emmerson, putting Rose's arm around her shoulders, "Let's get you to the med bay."
"Rose, I'm gonna run a scan of you and the baby, alright?" said Emmerson.
Rose nodded her head as she relaxed on the examination table.
Emmerson proceeded with the scan. The initial scan didn't take long, it was looking and reading the results that did.
"Well Rose, the kid's doing fine, would you like to know the gender?" asked Emmerson.
"I would like it to be a surprise, thanks." said Rose.
"Oh, you're in for a few surprises," Emmerson mumbled under her breath.
"What?"
"Nothing!" Emmerson covered, "But- wait, that can't be right, the only way that can happen is if- hold on." Emmerson's finger typed furiously on the keyboard.
"Is something wrong?" asked Rose worriedly.
"No nothing's wrong, Rose, it's just- I knew it!" Emmerson cut herself off.
"Knew what?"
"Rose, your child has, not one heart, but two, and it has one hundred percent Time Lord DNA!"
"What?"
"The only way that can happen is if there are two Time Lord parents! Which means, the pain you experienced back in the console room, wasn't anything dangerous. It was the kid changing your DNA into Time Lord DNA! But again, that cannot happen without the help of something!"
"So wait a moment," said Rose, "You're saying that I'm a Time Lord?"
"Well, Time Lady to be precise,"
"How can that happen?"
Two words escaped Emmerson's lips. Two words that no one ever thought that they would hear again. The two most feared words in the entire universe came out of Emmerson's mouth in nothing but a hoarse whisper.
"Bad Wolf."
