It shattered her to the very core. She shivered, shook, and fell, the rough touch of the earth and branches scratching at her skin. Why, why did this have to happen? Why did he have to die?

No, it couldn't be right. It just couldn't be. But, there was no other truth. No other way.

It was the only one.

Vera turned her head, looking back at the sleeping form of her Trainer. She cared so much for him. He had always been there for her and the others, and that... that was how he was to be rewarded?! No, she wouldn't have it. It wouldn't come to be.

She clenched her fists, straightening, her expression changing to one of determination.

She would stop it.

She brushed herself down, turning away from the human boy and the assortment of slumbering Pokémon. She walked off, pausing to sit close to the whispering shelter of a bush. She sat down, eyes once more fixating upon the starry-lit sky above.

Her gaze roved about the patterns, hovering momentarily on each sign, before moving onto the next.

There was time.

Enough, perhaps, to save him.

She breathed in deeply, then exhaled abruptly, her fingers clenching about the tendrils of grass that rested on either side of her. She closed her eyes, listening to the hum of the psychic energy that imbued her.

Her eyes flashed open, her vision aglow in blue.

Future Sight.

She could see every detail, hear every sound.

He'd be safe.

She vowed it.

With her plan stashed away in her heart, the blue glow faded out to her typical gaze. She glanced back over at her sleeping companions, and stood up, walking over to join them. As she settled down, resting her head against the cushion so thoughtfully laid out for her all those hours ago, her mind was already racing.

Tomorrow, tomorrow it would happen.

Tomorrow he would be safe.

He cried out, the shimmer given off from the flickering flames burning away at his skin. He stumbled back, his arms raised in defense against the towering Arcanine.

A thief, a robber. He laughed behind his mask at the kid.

"Hand over everything you have, otherwise I'll get Grimm here to burn you to cinders."

"No," Nicholas told him grimly, backing further away from the man, his hands clutching tightly to one of the PokéBalls at his waist. "I'm not giving you a single thing of mine."

The thief tutted, then shook his head in a mocking manner. "Your loss, kid. Grimm, burn him down."

Nicholas hurled one of the black-and-red capsules before the fiery dog.

Vera was released.

She knew that all of this was simply a ruse. That the man knew of the fact that Nicholas was a Trainer. That they would all charge out during the fight and kill the boy during the battle.

The others were watching their every move.

Everything seemed to flow in slow motion for her; the Arcanine rearing up to spew a blast of flames in her direction. It was those few milliseconds that she had needed.

A flare of cerulean flashed from her eyes, lifting the Fire-type, its owner, and the surrounding, concealed enemies into the air.

"Hurry!" Vera mentally cried out. "Run Nicholas."

He stared in shock at his Pokémon, any response that he might've had gone in that moment.

"I haven't much time. I can only hold them off for so long." The desperation in the look that she shot her Trainer must've gotten through. He stepped away, then turned. With a hesitant glance back at Vera - his eyes conveying everything he'd never said - he ran.

The pull on her energy reserve told her of the limited amount of time she had left.

She would be able to keep them like this, snarling, shouting, cursing, until Nicholas was far enough away to escape on the back of Marv. And then, in their release, they would block her from escaping.

Too weakened to do much else but fend off a few blows. Vera knew that she would die at the hands of these murderers. Her heart sunk deep down into the abyss of her sorrow.

But, it was enough that her friends - no, her family - had gotten away safely.

A tear rolled down her cheek. "Goodbye… my kin."

Pokédex Entry: It can see the future from the movement of the stars. When it learns its Trainer's life span, it cries in sadness.
