Chapter 9-
From Friend to Best Friend
The Stress or the Weakness?
Part 2
Narrator's P.O.V
Professor Stein walked down the corridors of the DWMA. A yellow folder containing some files in his grasp. He reached the Death room entrance and entered without hesitation. He walked down the long hallway, the deadly blades hovering from above. He was now face to face with Lord Death who had been awaiting him since the morning. Stein handed him the yellow folder as Lord Death took it into his hands.
"I found it not too long ago. You were right Lord Death." Stein told him. Lord death opened up the yellow folder and took out the files from inside it. There was a tab sticking out from the top with the letter M on it. Lord Death glanced down at the rest of the first paper. It read 'SHONAKU MIWASAKI' next to a photo of a question mark as to where a photo should have been. Lord Death read the rest.
'PART OF THE MIWASAKI FAMILY. LOST DURING FIRE. MISSING. NOT LONG AFTER THE HUGE MISTAKE OF THE DWMA, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE TWO MIWASAKI'S HAD A DAUGHTER BY THE NAME OF SHONAKU. HER BODY WAS NEVER FOUND. LOST CASE.'
There was more information going on about this. Lord Death flipped through the rest of the pages and sighed. He looked back up to Professor Stein. "How could I forget this one. That ruthless mistake we made that day..Shonaku Miwasaki the missing child we could never find as well."
"And here she is, attending the academy." Stein added in.
"I almost forgot that wizards existed..to find one now after all these years, their population must be getting worse..Do you think?" Lord Death asked. Professor Stein answered back. "If she told the others about her abilities? I think by now she has. When should we tell them, Lord Death?"
"Not now, Stein. It's too soon. Now that we know what Shonaku is fully capable of I want you to keep more of a close eye on her. We don't know how stable she can be with her magic. I don't want to cause any trouble for anyone." Lord Death said. Professor Stein nodded.
"Yes Lord Death. I'll leave you with the files. I have a class to teach."
"Right, right. Well, thank you for the files, Stein. Have a good day."
"Welcome. You too." Professor Stein left the Death room.
Everything that I read about Shonaku. I can see why we should keep it a secret. She's a problem child, if she was told now, who knows how she would react. Hmm..interesting, a wizard. Never heard of those..I'd like to dissect her to find out more about them.. Professor Stein thought.
Shonaku and Crona sat next to each other once again in class. Except that they were waiting for Professor Stein to come. Nygus stood beside the desk as she supervised the class. "Professor Stein had some business to attend to, so I will be temporarily watching over the class. You may talk amongst yourselves, but not too loudly." She announced. Shonaku sighed in boredom. Her eyes wavered to her paper filled with notes. Then to her pencil. Her mindless thoughts carried her away to dozing off. She used her finger to make the top of the pencil levitate and spin around on its own. She blankly watches it move as it was maneuvered by her index finger. It was only till then when Crona noticed the pencil at the corner of his eye. He turned his head to the pencil and watched in amazement. He looked at Shonaku then back at the pencil. Shonaku realized Crona was looking at her and the pencil. She saw that she carelessly used her magic to make the pencil spin. She slammed the pencil down with her hand and laughed nervously.
"Hehehe..oops.." She said. Crona still eye-widen expressioned could only say one word which was, "Woah.." Shonaku turned to him. "I-I'm sorry that wasn't suppose to happen. It was an accident! I got a bit careless, so don't freak out!" Crona still stared at her hand as if the pencil was still spinning there. "That was..amazing.."
Crona had seen magic before from witches, like Medusa, Eruka, and other witches. But not like the kind he saw from Shonaku. It was something harmless. It didn't kill anyone, it didn't look harming. And when he saw Shonaku, she looked like she was playing with her own little toy. It was the first time he had ever seen something so..harmless. Shonaku thought that her mistake would freak out Crona. She wasn't use to telling anyone about her abilities in this way, and for that matter using them in a way. But she saw that Crona looked like he enjoyed her error. She smiled. An idea suddenly popped in her head.
Shonaku grabbed her pencil once again and drew a little stick figure on the side of her paper. She put the pencil down and looked around to check that no one was watching. She then put a finger on top of the drawing and muttered some words that Crona couldn't make out.
Suddenly the stick figure's blank expression turned into a happy one and it began to dance with joy. A little pink aura glowed from the paper. Crona watched in amusement as the little stick figure continued to do its jolly little dance. Shonaku smiled happily. "I can do a lot of other things too. I've practiced lots of spells for a while now." Shonaku tapped the paper and just like that, the stick figure stopped dancing and returned to a blank expression. "I can show you some more after our last period!" Shonaku told Crona. Crona looked back at Shonaku. "Yeah okay!" He said. They both giggled a little. But Crona stopped and looked over Shonaku's shoulder. He sweat dropped as he pointed in the direction behind her.
"Uh..Shonaku.."
"Huh?" Shonaku turned around to find Hiro and Ox once again with her. Their eyes shaped as heart and their mouths drooling. Nothing more than a bunch of idiots in love. You know, these two are really beginning to annoy me. Shonaku thought to herself. Why don't they go somewhere else?
"Um, may I help you two?" Shonaku asked in an annoyed tone.
"Shonaku have I ever told you that you are the most gorgeous creature that ever walked this planet?" Hiro asked daydreaming like. Shonaku's eyes formed into black dots and she sweat dropped as well.
"Uh..what."
Ox went in front of Hiro. "You make me want to marry you, Shonaku...Marry me oh please do!" Ox went on and on, but Hiro had become annoyed by this. He only wanted Shonaku to himself. And so did Ox.
"YOU marry HER? ha, like that will happen! Not in a million years!" Hiro teased. Ox made a growling sound and gritted his teeth.
"Oh yeah?! Like you'll even have the chance to lay a finger on her! You idiot, you'll never have the chance! As for I, my smarts will delude her into falling in love with me!" Ox and Hiro continued to rant on. Little by little, Shonaku's annoyance was building up to anger. And at last, did she snap.
"HOLY FUCK WILL YOU TWO SHUT THE HELL UP ALREADY! DAMMIT I'M GONNA BLAST YOUR FUCKING HEADS TO BITS! YOU'RE BOTH ANNOYING AND LUNATICS. WHERE YOU BELONG IS IN A FUCKING ASYLUM GOT IT?!" And with that, Shonaku formed her hands into bazookas and blasted them across the room. They crashed into a wall. Nygus turned to Shonaku with a finger to her lip. Or at least where it would be under the bandages.
"Quiet down, Shonaku. I said not too loudly. And please stop hurting the boys. Least you can do is say sorry."
Shonaku pouted folding her arms. She murmured. "Yeah, I'm sorry that they apparently have tumors in their brains. Hmph!"
Nygus looked up at Shonaku and eyed her. She's the student that Professor Stein and Lord Death are talking about at this moment. A wizard hm? Interesting...I wonder if they'll bother to tell her what really happened that time.. Nygus thought. Just then, Professor Stein entered the classroom. He walked over to Nygus and thanked her for the supervision. Nygus nodded her head and left the classroom. Professor Stein announced that class was now beginning. Everyone settled down at that point, Hiro and Ox sitting back at their seats. Shonaku surprised of how they survived her deadly blast. She made a what-the-fuck face.
There were more and more of these kishins. They were beginning to surround Kid and Black Star from all around. "They're coming down on us Black Star, what should we do?" Kid asked Back Star. Black Star got into fighting position. His eyes narrowed, focusing on all the kishins around them.
"I'll attack from above and you'll attack from below, Kid. Are ya up for it?" Kid went into an attacking position as well. "Yeah." He said.
Black Star jumped high into the air flipping while doing so. He used his soul wavelength to attack all the kishins that were below him. Kid slid underneath all the kishins and shot from below. One kishin noticed Kid in particular and turned to him. Kid saw this and swung his leg to trip the kishin, causing it to fall. Kid then shot its head off with a stronger power. The group of kishins that had surrounded Kid and Black Star were no linger there. Right on time, Maka caught up with the others. On her way, she had an idea. It was risky, but it was what she wanted to do.
"Oh hey, Maka! Better now?" Black Star asked.
"Yeah," Maka replied. "I'm fine now. Look, I have a plan, but don't argue with me about. This is my choice."
"Whatver you need us to do we'll do it." Kid assured. Maka nodded to him.
"Okay, you guys keep me guarded while I go find the main source. I believe this main source is a big boss kishin. I used my soul perception, and I could sense a strong wavelength not far from here. He's close. In fact, I think he's planning to move in on us. I can sense him moving in this direction. Trust me on this that I can do this alone." This is one way to test my abilities...I just need to know, am I getting weaker?
Kid and Black Star wanted to protest, but whenever it came to Maka, you knew you couldn't argue with her. They both nodded and let Maka pass through them. Maka nodded back at them. She ran to the location of the main kishin. Soul appeared once again in a reflection on the scythe blade. "Are you sure about this, Maka?" He asked, a bit concerned. Maka smirked in determination. "Yeah, don't worry. We can do this." Maka ran off with Soul.
Now there weren't as many kishins as before so Kid and Black Star stood there in silence. Black Star was the one to speak up first. "Hey, what's gotten in to Maka all of a sudden? Seems like somethin's been bothering here." Kid scratched the back of his head, Liz and Patty still in his hands. He sighed. "I don't know. But like Maka said, there shouldn't be anything for us to worry about for her." Kid shaded his eyes with his hand and looked around for more kishins. Oddly, there really wasn't a sign of them now. Black Star place his hands on his hips. "Yeah, but I think she's just trying to stop me from becoming a god! Obviously she'd be jealous if I became supreme leader and crap. But of course, not even she will get in my way! I'm to big of a star to let anyone get in my way! Hyahahahaha!" Black Star laughed to himself. Kid looked at him oddly. He rolled his eyes. The two continued searching for new kishins.
Maka ran a short distance with Soul in her hands. This was it. She was ready to defeat this main source and save these people who lived in Serenity village. The rocks wee piled up more to look more like cliffs. Caves were all around, and there wasn't much open field. Maka continued running when from her right ear, she heard a cry for help. Maka stopped in her tracks panting now. She looked around to find where the cry for help had come from. "Help! Somebody! Please! He's captured us!" Maka turned to her left. There was a dark cave. It looked wider than all the other small ones.
The sound had come from there. A wind blew from inside and blew through Maka's hair like a breeze. But the gentle blow gave her chills down her back. The kishin's soul wavelength was more sensible than ever. The sensation was off the roof. Maka new it was definitely in their. It was their with the men that had gone missing. Just like how the villagers had said. Without further hesitation, Maka walked in.
The cave was very dark. It was damp, and water dripped from above. Some of it trickled down on Maka. The cave sounded so hallow and silent. Another cry for help broke that silent. Maka listened carefully for the cry, and continued on. As she walked, the sound got closer by the minute. Then, from a distance, she saw three men trapped in a little cell. There was light there. Maka neared them quickly. As she did, she saw that they looked starved and tired. They were all put together. Maka reached in front of the cell. The cell was made of metal. Nothing that Maka couldn't cut through though.
"It's okay now, I'm here to help you." Maka told the three calmly. One of them shockingly pointed a finger at her. "W-who are youu?" He asked a bit frightened. Maka put out Soul in front of her, getting prepared to cut the metal bars. "It's okay. I'm from the DWMA located in Death City. I was sent here to kill the kishin, and also rescue the men who had gone missing. The three men crawled towards Maka, clenching to the bars on their knees.
"Oh, th-thank you so much! We thought that we'd never be saved! Oh thank you!" They all thanked and pleaded. "I need you all to step away from the bars. I'm going to cut them so you can be free." Maka commanded them. Then, a voice from behind her spoke.
"I don't think I'm going to let you do that." It said in a raspy inhuman tone. Maka stopped and stood frozen. The three men all shrunk back in fear. Maka closed her eyes and swallowed. It was him. The main source. Maka slowly turned around to confront her target. He looked like the kishins they had been fighting. Except this one was taller, more muscular, had sharper, longer claws, and had a more deadly look to him. Surely, this was the main guy. That had grown into an entire army. An army that pulverized half of the village.
So it can talk. Maka thought. She looked at him carefully. The kishin continued to talk. "Hello, child. I am Kishin Kayagu, I am one of a kind of my species. I'm not your average kishin. Maka Albarn." Maka gasped. She stared at Kayagu in shock. How..How does he know my name..? She was beginning to feel a little frightened herself. But then she regained focus and gripped tighter onto Soul. Maka pointed the scythe at Kayagu.
"How do you know my name, Kishin Kayagu." She asked him in a serious tone. Kayagu grinned, all his teeth showing. His mouth drooling in a disgusting way. "Hehehe...I've been watching you. You and your little friends." Maka glared at him. She then ran at full speed towards him; at the same time activating kishin hunter. She attacked as Kayagu swiftly dodged her attacks. He bent his long neck to her. "Where is she." he asked Maka. Maka looked at him confusedly. "Who?" Kayagu's smile faded away into an angered look. "Hm, I thought so. She didn't come with you I see." He said, ignoring Maka's question. He turned around to pace back and forth. Maka found this as an opening and lunged for his back.
kayagu easily blocked Maka's move and tripped her. Maka fell to the ground and groaned. "Maka!" Soul yelled. Maka stood back up wearily. "It's okay. I got this." Maka yelled as she once more charged for Kayagu. Kayagu then picked up Maka and threw her through the ceiling of the cave. Maka landed on the surface and was welcomed by the outside again. Kayagu jumped from the hole he had created and landed in front of Maka. Maka immediately jumped back up and made a deep cut on Kayagu's chest. He yelled in pain and grabbed hold of his chest. A deep gash now, his blood red instead of green. His eyes glowed a bright red, representing his anger.
Maka set in for another attack, but Kayagu slashed Maka away. He roared in fury and kept throwing Maka around. Maka on the floor, wasn't able to get up because every time she did, Kayagu would be there to push her down. In an effortless escape Maka backed up slowly. Her hand slipped on what felt like an edge. She looked behind her and saw that she was at the edge of a cliff. And that the cliff was pretty high from the ground. There was no way Maka could make a jump like that. She turned back to Kayagu. She stared at him for a good moment. Then she asked, "Who is this person that you're looking for? And why are you invading this village? I need answers Kishin Kayagu!" She demanded.
Kayagu was already in a position to throw Maka off the cliff, but placed his long arm by his side. He looked at Maka with disdain. "I did this purposely to get your attention. I was sent here by Him to find the girl."
Maka heard it a second time. She wanted to make this clear that the person he was looking for was a girl. But who? And who's Him, the one that sent Kayagu to do this?
"Who is this He that you speak of, Kayagu?" Maka asked him. Kayagu cleared his throat.
"This He that I speak of? Why you see, you may have not known this but there are actually a complete species of us. And he is the one ruler. His name is Ap-" Kayagu was cut off by a blade going through his heart. He gasped and tried to breath. The blade was then taken out of his back. Kayagu yelled in pain and disappeared into black smoke. The person who had inserted the blade was Black Star. Kid standing behind him. Maka looked up to them and stood up.
"Sorry, I couldn't help but let myself join in. Man he was actually easier to defeat than I thought. Easier than the other kishins we killed! Guess my powers really are that ultimate!" Black Star boasted.
"Yeah, but where is his soul then? It should've been here.." Maka wondered. Kid walked up to her.
"That doesn't matter at the moment. At least he's gone. What we should really worry about are the three men that we found down below. I'm guessing you have encountered them as well, Maka." Maka looked a distance. "Yeah.."
"Any who, what we need to do now is take those men safely back to their village. That's our task for now. Are you hurt badly?" Kid asked. Maka only shook her head. "No, I'm fine. Nothing but a few cuts and bruises. It'll be alright." Every weapon changed back into their human forms. The gang went back down to the cave to take the three men back to Serenity village. Soul walked by Maka, while he helped one of the weary men walk.
"Hey Maka," He said. Maka looked at him. "Yeah?"
"What he said. Do you think it's true?" Maka glance at the floor. Her mind deep in her thoughts. "It's possible. More of them. But what kind exactly? And who was he after?" Maka stopped in her tracks. Soul looked behind to her. "I don't know. Need a moment?"
"Yeah. Just a minute." Soul nodded then continued on. Maka stood there, recollecting her thoughts. Who was he after? And did he die? A flashback of just a few minutes ago came into mind. If he did, then where did his soul go? It just wasn't there..But that cut, he has to be dead. I can't sense anything either for the time being.. Maka blinked once or twice looking up again. She looked at the gang, helping the three men. She walked off to go help in someway. Perhaps comfort them from the trauma.
Then, from under the rocks that piled each other, two bright red eyes appeared in the darkness. The pair of eyes watched Maka walk off. Then just like that, they disappeared.
The bell rang, announcing the final period of the day. Everyone packed up their books and begun to walk out the class casually. Crona and Shonaku stood up and piled their books. Shonaku went and put her books on Stein's desk, since she didn't have somewhere else to put them. Crona walked up to her. "Shonaku I'm going to go put my books away in my room. We can meet at the balcony afterwards." Shonaku smiled at him gladly.
"Yeah, okay! Meet ya there! Just you wait, I've got plenty of spells to show you! Or should I say, tricks up my sleeve! Haha!" Crona giggled at the little joke. He waved to Shonaku and left the classroom. Shonaku dazed about, staring down at the desk. The smile still on her face.
Gee I didn't think Crona would really enjoy spells. I'll be happy to show him some. Although the ones I want to show him haven't been mastered well..I guess I'll show him some simple ones instead. It's okay..practice is all I need. I really like talking to Crona, even if he's so shy. He's like a fluffy bunny. Heh..what the hell am I saying? I bunny? Lord Death, maybe his shyness is rubbing on me and making me say this kind of fluffy crap. I hope I don't become shy and shit anytime soon. Wait, how long have I been fucking standing here for? Five minutes? Ten? Shit I gotta go! I hope Crona isn't there waiting for me! That would be bad for him to wait for me. Ugh I have to stop talking in my thoughts if I want to get a move on! Agh! STOP TALKING ME DAMMIT. FUCK.
Shonaku finally snapped out of it. She rushed out the door and accidentally bumped into somebody. They glanced at her for a moment, waiting for an apology but none was ever made. They then turned at walked away. The manners that Shonaku never learned. Or at least listened to. About to walk further she heard something that caught her attention.
"Oh hey little guy, where do you think you're going?"
Huh? Shonaku thought. The door was still open and hid behind it. She looked over to see who it was. There was Crona. And another guy. Way taller, and older perhaps. The guy had a smirk on his face. Shonaku couldn't see Crona's face, but his head bent low. She continued to look.
"Hey, why won't you talk to me aye?" The guy asked. Crona didn't say a word. The guy then shoved Crona to the wall, and smacked down the books from Crona's hands. "Come on talk to me, little guy!" The guy's smirk faded away, then he snickered. "You scared? All your little friends are gone, so you're all alone. That means I can beat the crap outta ya. No one will notice it. Listen to me here, no one likes you, got it? You're just a little loner and weak. Not even your little friend inside you can help. Why don't you give up on living? You know there's no point if you're gonna get pushed over again and again. You're such a loser, you should go and die."
Crona was slightly trembling, but he still didn't say a word. His hands open as if the books were still in his hands. Shonaku watched in terror as she saw her own friend get bullied by this guy.
"Damn, still not a word from your goddamn mouth. Guess you're always use to this crap. You're so damn emo, of course your pink hair fails to clear that point. You're a useless freak you got that?! No one wants you! Useless. Freak!"
The two last words repeated in Shonaku's head. Memories from before flooded her.
"Ew, you zombie get away from us!"
"You look like a clown, ugly!"
"You're such a useless freak! Ew!"
Shonaku clenched tightly on her necklace. Her mouth was shaking, and tears were beginning to swell up in her eyes. The pain from her past, it never went away. She had always blamed the one thing that caused it all. The necklace. And at some point, Shonaku broke down. She ran and yelled to the guy. She shoved him. Hard enough to almost lose his balance. Tears streamed down her face. Shonaku gritted her teeth.
"Shut up! Shut up, shut up, SHUT UP! You have no right to hurt my friend! He's not alone! He has me! The only one that shouldn't be living is you! Because you bully others, bully! What the hell has he done wrong to you?! Nothing! And I'll refuse to believe anything if he ever did hurt you in some way! Have you no feelings for others you bastard?! Imagine what it would feel like if you were told this crap! I fucking hate you for this! Just-just go away! I'm sick and tired of bullies like you. Just stop..." Shonaku could no longer yell anymore, for her sobs conquered her shouts.
The young man stared at Shonaku in shock. Then he slowly walked away, without a word. Crona looked at Shonaku, surprised about everything that had just happened.
"Shonaku..." Crona said. Shonaku put her hands to her face.
"Just leave me the fuck alone..you should be thankful that I saved your fucking ass.." And with that, she ran off. Crona watched her leave. All this time, Crona had been bullied. But whenever it occurred, Maka and them were never there to witness the event. It was always a time when he was left alone. Up until now that is. The way Shonaku spoke, it surprised Crona. Yet gave him this feeling. A feeling of feeling hurt for her in some way. He didn't know why he had this feeling. He slowly picked up his books and walked to his cellar room.
It was now sunset as the gang finally returned to the DWMA. Maka hadn't talked much throughout the rest of the way back, as she was thinking about Kayagu and what he meant. They all walked up the stairs. And when Maka looked up, she saw Shonaku sitting on the top step, her head buried in her arms that were being supported by her knees. As Maka neared her, she could hear crying. Maka then quickly ran to her and kneeled beside her.
"Shonaku! What's wrong? What happened?" She asked in concern. Shonaku continued to sob, but she managed a few words out.
"I-I hate them..I hate them all!" Maka looked at Shonaku in confusion.
"Why does it have to be this way..why..just when I thought I had ran away from it all..." Maka was about to ask Shonaku what was going on, when Crona ran out the academy calling out for Shonaku. Crona saw the gang and Shonaku at the steps. He quickly ran to them all.
Maka looked up at Crona. "Crona, what's going on? Why is she like this?" Maka put a hands on Shonaku's back and rubbed, comforting her. Crona looked away with a saddened face. He held his right arm with his left.
"You see...I-I uh..something happened. Y-You know the new student, Mike? Who came a few months ago..?" Maka nodded at Crona. Everyone else fell silent for what they were going to hear from Crona. "Well..he's..he's kind of been...been..bullying me for a while..." Maka frowned and everyone stared at Crona. Maka's expression showed the most though. "Crona..why..how did I not know this?"
"I didn't think that I could tell you..I didn't want to bother any of you about it..But..Shonaku saw it happen..and she..I don't know..She just went up to Mike and yelled at him for bullying me..The things she said, I think it made him speechless..But she started crying for some reason. Then she ran off..I wanted to look for her so I did..And now I found her here..W-Was this my fault?"
Maka shook her head at Crona. "No, no, it wasn't. I see that she was only trying to defend you then. But..Shonaku." She turned to her and kneeled closer. "Why are you crying? He's gone now and Crona's okay..there should be nothing to cry about."
Shonaku sniffled. "You don't understand..He may be gone..but there are others. I can see it now..The-The same thing..happened to me..I couldn't handle the pain and I just broke down." Maka looked at Shonaku as her face fell. No one said anything still. Maka then hugged Shonaku tightly, embracing her. "It's going to be okay, Shonaku. I'm sorry about whatever pain you went through. And I know that there will be more people in the world who are cruel and will bully. But you can't break down and give up. What you did there was brave and heroic. You defended your friend and that was good! You really are doing well here, you just have to keep trying, okay? No matter what. I think you'll do great in this world. Look, Crona's safe. And you created peace."
Shonaku looked up, the last exact word, reminding her of something. She stood up immediately, startling Maka. She smiled, a determined look on her face. She breathed deeply and wiped away the tears from her face. Her eyes still a bit puffy and her nose a little red. A quote from someone she knew came into mind.
Know this. Whatever the necklace's symbol changes to when worn by someone, represents what they are destined to do. As for you Shonaku, you are destined to make peace. A great, everlasting peace...
The memory faded away. Shonaku happily looked at everyone. "I feel better now. I'm sorry if I caused a commotion for everyone. I'm good now though. Thank you, Maka. You really helped me with your words. I'll be better off now! Heehee." Everyone smiled back, glad that Shonaku was okay now. Shonaku turned to Crona. Crona smiled at her. Then Shonaku went to hug him. She didn't let go. "Thank you..Shonaku..I've never had someone do such a thing for me..You really are a great friend.." Crona said lightly.
Shonaku was so happy her friend was safe. Safe from harm. This concluded for her that she had to be by his side, to help him in his path of life.
"You're welcome, Crona..Anything for my best friend.."
