AN: IT HAS BEEN WAAAAAAAY TOO LONG! Sorry! Anyways, this is the last chapter! (I know, I know, I'm sad too). I just want to note that the beginning references 'adult situations' so there's my disclaimer there. As always, thanks to all my reviews and to those who favorited and followed. I hope you like!
I own nothing.
Chapter Ten:
-3 months later-
Waverly woke up but didn't open her eyes. She was so comfortable and warm in her bed. She rolled over and pulled the sheets up under her chin. That's when she noticed that he was not beside her. Waverly cracked open one of her deep brown eyes. The bed beside her really was empty. Yawning, Waverly sat up. The sheets slipped down into her lap, exposing her bare skin. Waverly shivered and pulled the covers back up around her shoulders. Across the room, Waverly's eyes landed upon Loki. He was kneeling on the floor, lacing up one of his boots. Loki's hair was slicked back as if he had just gotten out of the shower. The faint smell of shampoo confirmed Waverly's suspicions.
"Do you really have to go already?" Waverly asked.
Loki jumped, slightly startled. He straightened up and turned to Waverly. "I had hoped not to wake you."
Waverly's lower lip jutted out in a pout. "You weren't going to say goodbye?"
"You know I hate saying goodbye." Loki crossed the room and sat next to Waverly on the bed. He pulled the sheet more tightly around her shoulders and then pulled her close to him. "But now that you are awake, I can thank you for the wonderful evening last night."
Waverly felt her cheeks grow warm as pinkness spread across her skin. She nudged Loki playfully. "Oh shut up."
Loki slipped a slender finger under Waverly's chin and tilted her head up to kiss her. "Now my dear, I must be going before your agency realizes I've been here."
Waverly half smiled, half frowned. "When will I see you again?"
"Soon, dearest. I promise." Loki kissed Waverly again. A deep, passionate kiss that left Waverly wanting more.
But with a flash of green light, Loki was gone. Waverly sighed. She glanced over at the clock. It was almost seven o'clock. She had better get ready.
After a quick shower, Waverly sat in her usual chair in the debriefing room of Avengers Tower. Her brother was on her left, Thor on her right. Fury was at the head of the table, as always. Across the sleek table top, Tony, Steve, and Bruce were seated. Opposite Fury sat Natasha and Maria Hill. After Tony passed a pot of coffee around the table (which Waverly declined), Fury called the weekly meeting to order. Weekly meetings were something Fury had recently concocted. They were supposed to be a convenient way for the Avengers and SHEILD to remain up to speed on the various missions Fury was sending everyone out on. Waverly thought they were a waste of time. Mostly because she got grilled about Loki every meeting. Today was no different.
"First thing's first," the director began. "Loki. Any sign of him? Thor, report."
Thor stood. "I have not seen any sign of my brother for quite some time, Director Fury. Upon my next return to Asgard, I shall consult Heimdall, for he sees all."
Throughout this exchange, Fury's one eye was locked on Waverly. Waverly pointedly avoided his gaze.
"Very well, Thor." Fury nodded. "Barton!"
Both Clint and Waverly responded. "Yes, sir?"
Fury sighed. "Waverly."
Waverly finally looked up at Fury. "Yes Director?"
"Have you had any contact with the fugitive?"
Waverly felt everyone's gaze turn on her. Fury's one dark eye bored into her, as if trying to read her soul. Waverly somehow managed to keep a straight face.
"I can honestly say sir, that I have no idea where Loki is." Waverly forced herself not to look away.
Fury was silent for a moment. He didn't blink, and neither did Waverly. The whole room was quiet; everyone was watching the director's stare down with Waverly. Finally, Fury said, "Very well." He turned away from Waverly and addressed the rest of the table, talking about other current issues.
Once the meeting was dismissed, everyone filed out of the room. Natasha and Maria headed towards the elevator to the roof; they were about to take off for a mission in Hong Kong. Tony and Bruce headed down to the lab. Steve went off with Fury to discuss some secret mission the two had been planning for some time now. That left Waverly alone in the hallway with her brother and Thor. As soon as everyone else was out of earshot, Thor grabbed Waverly by the shoulder, turning her to face him.
"Is what you say true? About my brother."
Waverly nodded. "I don't know where he is, Thor."
Thor studied Waverly's face for a moment before nodding himself and turning away. His heavy footfalls faded down the hallway. As soon as his enormous figure was out of sight, Clint rounded on Waverly next.
"You've been taking lessons from Nat? You've never been good at lying."
Waverly rolled her eyes. "I've not been taking lessons from your girlfriend."
Clint opened his mouth to automatically object to this statement, but Waverly continued.
"And I'm not lying. I really have no idea where Loki is."
Now Clint rolled his eyes. "But you know where he's been. He was here last night, wasn't he?"
Waverly met her brother's eyes. The eyes of a spy, an assassin, a marksman. Clint's eyes could spot lie a mile off. He wasn't called Hawkeye for nothing. Waverly didn't even consider lying to her brother; she'd never pull it off.
"Yeah," she said in a low voice, "but he's gone."
"If Fury finds out that he's coming here and you're not turning him in…"
"I know, Clint," Waverly snapped. She closed her eyes and sighed. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to yell at you."
Clint put a hand on his sister's shoulder and gave it a squeeze. "Hey, I understand. I just don't want you to get in trouble."
"I know," Waverly said more softly. "But I can't turn him in. I can't. I love him."
Clint nodded. "I know." The archer gave his sister's shoulder one more reassuring squeeze before he turned and headed off on his own mission.
Waverly was standing on the roof of the tower. Her brother had left, Nat and Maria were long gone, and Thor had gone to spend the night at Jane's. Tony was most likely asleep in his penthouse, and since she had never been quite close to Steve or Bruce, Waverly was alone. She hadn't been given a mission in weeks. Fury didn't trust her to work alone, not with Loki still out there. But that didn't mean Waverly was on vacation. Fury had Waverly on a strict training schedule. She was either training in the gym or running simulations of various battle situations in Stark's virtual reality room. Today, Waverly had spent hours protecting virtual civilians from an imaginary mad man that looked an awful lot like a certain god of mischief. Waverly figured Fury had done that on purpose. Even though the long day of training left Waverly exhausted, she couldn't sleep. So she had left her bed and wandered up to the roof. Waverly liked sitting up there at night. Though the lights of New York City bleached out the stars, Waverly loved staring up into the inky black expanse of the night sky. She could imagine, that somewhere, Loki was underneath this very same sky, thinking about her just as she was thinking about him.
Tonight, though, Waverly suppressed a shiver. Thor's comment earlier reminded her that Heimdall, gatekeeper of Asgard, could see every living soul in the nine realms; including her and Loki. He could be watching both of them at this very moment.
"He cannot see you."
Waverly spun around so fast, she nearly lost her balance, which would have been bad seeing as she was on top of the tallest building in New York. A few feet away, Loki was leaning against one of the SHIELD jets parked on the rooftop. On his face was the arrogant smile he always had.
"Did you just read my mind?" Waverly frowned.
Loki's smile widened. "Not exactly." He pushed himself off of the jet and walked over to Waverly, pulling her into his arms and against his chest. She was warm against him, like she always was. Her hair smelled like flowers. Loki closed his eyes and let her scent and her warmth wash over him.
Waverly wrapped her arms around Loki's waist. She laid her head on his chest, listening to the soothing 'thud' of his head she lost herself in him as well. After a moment, she pulled away slightly and looked up into his emerald green eyes. "What do you mean he can't see me?"
Loki lifted one hand from Waverly's waist and gestured around them. "I have a few spells that can cloud even Heimdall's gaze."
Sure enough, as Waverly looked around, she saw that a slight green tinge surrounded her and Loki, giving the night an eerie look.
"It will not last long though."
Waverly nodded. "I didn't expect to see you again so soon."
Loki's mischievous smile returned to his lips. "I have a surprise for you."
One of Waverly's eyebrows arched up questioningly.
Loki leaned forward and whispered in Waverly's ear, his words tickling her skin. "Hold on tightly."
Waverly felt Loki's grip around her tighten before flashes of green light sprang up around them. Then, with a jolt, Waverly felt her feet leave the floor.
AN: THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING MY STORIES! This is the end of my Loki/Waverly trilogy. As you can see, I've left it open for sequels later, but I'm taking a break from Loki/Waverly for awhile. Waverly will still be in Adventures in Avenger Sitting. I saw Thor: The Dark World and I have another idea for a Loki/OC story that I might wright. I also want to work on some Captain America stuff and maybe something for Agents of SHIELD, and of course my original stuff. School's busier than ever so I have no idea when I'll be able to write anything, so stay tuned readers! -CL
