"Did you know that she talks in her sleep? Mostly it's just her rambling, worrying about school or prefect duties but sometimes I would catch my name. Followed of course by a firm 'No.'" He chuckles "Those nights were my favorite."
As he continues to watch her, he can't help but catch the sidelong glances they were giving him. Few expecting the bookworm and the prankster to have ever gotten along.
"Don't look so surprised. We were actually pretty great together. I mean except for when she wanted to kill me after our pranks." He grins cheekily. "I wanted to tell the lot of them but she was hesitant. With the war going on she didn't want to cause drama. I of course wouldn't have minded the attention but for her I would do anything."
Someone on my left asks "Do you think anyone noticed?"
"I think they had suspicions but I don't think anyone guessed we were together. My mother had been planning her wedding with Ron since first year so we were never even a consideration. That and everyone was too focused on the war. The war almost made it easier though to kid ourselves that we could remain in our bubble."
He sighs "But now that is all a dream because I'm up here while she's down there."
The others can't help but look at him with sympathy, each of them knowing the pain of loss early in life.
"We would have been great, though"
He whispers as he watches Hermione sleep.
With this statement, the others walk away allowing him to be alone with her and his thoughts. And as he looks down at the woman he loves, he can't help but want for the things he will never have. He longs to go to her and to wipe away her tears. To whisper into her ear that everything will be okay. Most of all he longs to see his sons grow up. Another set of Weasley twins is what the others will say. She doesn't know it yet but the two boys whose lives have just begun will be a handful. Very much like he and George.
But he knows that won't happen so until that time comes when he can see her again, he will continue to watch over her, over them. Protecting and guiding them to the best of his ability. He only hopes this will be enough.
