"Johnny!" Roy called when Johnny walked into the station next shift, "Did you hear? That guy from the last shooting, the one talking care of his younger siblings, Brackett says that he is going to make it!"
"That's great Roy! Foster care is such a hard system to go through," Johnny answered. Johnny had been through foster care from ages 11 to 14 after his parents died in a car accident. The accident was one of the reasons Johnny became a rescue man. His parents would have lived if the firemen had been able to get to them faster. Johnny always felt like he didn't fit in, and when he was comfortable with a family he would be moved to a different home. He was so glad when his aunt found out her brother had a son and was orphaned and took him in. "Hey Roy, did you hear that they found a wallet near the last shooting site? It was all over the news yesterday."
Roy replied, "Yeah I did hear that. I hope it belongs to the creep who has been targeting us. Joanne hasn't gotten a night of rest when I have been of shift because of him. She worries that she is going to get the call that you have been shot again or that I have been shot."
The tension was high in every station, especially in the stations where they had lost a member. Captains were on edge, even the smallest noise would make them turn around and check their surroundings.
~Emergency!~
Charlie wouldn't leave his house. He tried to go back to the sight, but the spot where he had been had yellow police tape around it. It was just a matter of time until he was found out. He constantly cursed himself for being so damn careless. He could be found out any day now. A loud banging at the door interrupted his thoughts, LA COUNTY POLICE. OPEN UP! WE HAVE YOU SURROUNDED!\
~Emergency!~
The tones went off in the station, Station 51, gunshot wound. 178 Courtland Avenue. 1-7-8 Courtland Avenue. Time out 13:26.
Roy and Johnny's eyes met for a quick second before running to the squad. There had been no calls to that address that day. Had the killer finally been caught?
~Emergency!~
Charlie cracked the door, and snapped "What do you want?"
"We just want to ask some routine questions." Officer Jim Reed answered, but Charlie knew better. Pulling his gun of his pocket, he shouted, "I'm not going to answer any of your questions!"
Before he could pull the trigger, Officer Reed's partner, Officer Malloy pulled his gun and shot Charlie in the chest.
~Emergency!~
It was Reed that met Johnny and Roy at the scene. He gave them a brief rundown, "We have got what we believe to be the serial killer. His wallet identifies him as Charlie Baker. Records says that his parents were killed in a fire when he was 18 and just recently his wife and kids were killed in a fire. Malloy shot him on the left side of the chest, and is currently putting pressure on the wound. He is also unconscious."
Johnny took over care of Charlie while Roy got on the biophone, "Rampart, this is squad 51. How do you read?"
"This is Rampart, we read you loud and clear, go ahead," the voice of Doctor Brackett was the answering voice.
"Rampart we have a male patient, approximately 30 years of age. His ID identifies him as Charlie Baker. He is suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper left chest. Vitals are as follows, pulse 80, respirations rapid and shallow, BP 90/60. We suspect a pneumothorax. Rampart, be advised the victim is the suspected serial killer."
"10/4 squad 51. Start an IV of Ringers, and transport as soon as possible." Doctor Brackett was relieved that the killer had finally been caught. He hated treating his paramedics and members from their stations.
Johnny was the one who rode in the ambulance with Charlie. Reed also rode in with him, as procedure said he had to do, even though Charlie had no chance of escaping. Roy met Johnny at the hospital with a relieved smile, happy that the killer had finally been caught.
~Epilogue~
The gang at 51 were having a BBQ in honor of Charlie being caught. Shortly after Roy and Johnny arrived back to the station, Reed had called and confirmed that Charlie was indeed the killer. As for Charlie, he had died on the operating table. LA county fireman could breathe easier now.
