Chapter 13: The Reveal
Nickolas calmed down relatively quickly and it took him a couple of minutes longer to calm down Roderich who was on the verge of panicking, he'd never heard the stoic Bulgarian cry before.
"So," the Austrian asked when they'd both clamed down, "I take it that Dimitri told you?"
Despite the tears still sliding down his face Nickolas couldn't help but smile, that was a risky sentence, what if Dimitri/Mina hadn't told Nickolas his/her secret and Nickolas was crying over something else? He wondered how badly he could scare Roderich if he replied 'who's Dimitri?'
But he dismissed the idea; Roderich would never fall for that.
"Dammit," he hissed instead, the tears flowing stronger, "why can't anyone I love be who they say they are?"
Roderich didn't reply, waiting for the Bulgarian Prince to finish.
Nickolas swiped at his eyes angrily, "let's just say that, for example, you liked this girl," he told Roderich, though the chance of Roderich liking a girl or being able to imagine a situation where he did were nonexistent, "and then this girl turned out not to be who she said she was, she was someone completely different. Let's say that, hypothetically, she was a guy. And the Prince of the country beside yours. And engaged to the woman your mother wants you to marry. What would you do?"
"I'm sorry; did you just say that your mother wants you to marry Magda?" Cut in Roderich worriedly.
"Roderich that's not the important part here," said Nickolas, leaning against the tree and sliding down the trunk until he was sitting on the dry earth. "So go on, tell me."
Roderich sighed, "I'm bisexual in this little 'hypothetical' situation, aren't I?"
"Yup," Said Nickolas, scratching at the dirt with a fingernail.
"Well does this crossdresser Prince I love have a good reason for lying?" He asked.
Nickolas thought about it, "yeah, a really good one."
"Hmm," said Roderich, "And does he love me?"
Nickolas though back to Dimitri's fear when he was trying to tell him, the sadness and sincerity in his red eyes, the kiss they'd shared…
"Yeah, I think he does," he said honestly.
"Hmm," Roderich said again, "and you said he's now a completely different person, do you mean on the inside, or just the person he is on the outside and his status in life?"
Nickolas thought about it some more, the wild hand waving, the mumbled explanation, the expressive ruby eyes, that kiss…
"No, he's still the same loveable idiot," he sighed, shutting his eyes.
"Well, I think you have your answer then," said Roderich calmly.
Nickolas sighed and wiped his eyes, "yeah, thanks Roderich, you're right." He wiped his eyes again.
"But…" His oldest friend prompted.
"But nothing, that's it," said Nickolas, dabbing at his eyes with his sleeve.
"Then why are you still crying?" Asked Roderich softly.
Nickolas sighed but he smiled too, of course Roderich would be able to tell when he was still crying.
"I-It's nothing," he said a little shakily, "my damn eyes just wont stop watering and," he dabbed at his eyes again, "dammit! Nothing, it's just been a long day," and it wasn't even midday yet.
Roderich said nothing again and Nickolas knew he wasn't satisfied with that answer.
"I just…" he said helplessly, "I just don't know, I guess it's just that I don't know how to take all this. I know Dimitri's a good guy and I know he loves and I know he's really the same person I've know the whole time…but I didn't fall in love with Dimitri, I fell in love with Mina! And now it's like she's died and there's a stranger I don't know in her place." As he admitted it he knew that this was what was really bothering him. It wasn't just that Mina was someone else; it was like she'd died.
But she hadn't, she and Dimitri were really the same person and Nickolas needed to reconcile one with the other.
"That's something you have to discuss with Dimitri, not me," said Roderich simply.
Nickolas stood, dusting dirt off his pants, "yeah, you're right." His mouth firmed as he brushed away his tears for the last time, "yeah. I think you might be right about that," he yawned, "geez, being emotional is exhausting, how do people do this all day?"
Roderich chuckled, "people like you and I might never know, alright then, I'll leave you to it then. Goodbye."
Nickolas nodded even though Roderich couldn't see him, apparently it was a habit both he and Dimitri shared, "okay, yeah, bye. And Roderich? Thank you. For everything." He hung up.
"Wow, Dimitri actually came clean. I knew he hadn't told you when he said he had but I wasn't expecting him to actually confess. Then again, I suppose he had to unless he wanted to run the risk of me telling you." Magda said lightly, walking up the path.
Nickolas wasn't like Dimitri, he didn't scream. No, he just nearly had a heart attack, quietly.
He wheeled around to face Magda, brown eyes accusing.
The tall female held up a hand peacefully, "I wasn't eavesdropping on your conversation. I saw you run out of your room earlier, from the look on your face it was easy to guess what had happened."
"Is that so?" Asked Nickolas steadily.
Magda laughed lightly, "yeah! You had an expression on your face that looked something like this," she pulled a face of abject horror.
Nickolas raised an eyebrow at her, unimpressed but if Magda noticed, she didn't seem to mind.
She stretched, working the kinks out of her back, "and so the game is up, Mina is Dimitri, you love him, he loves you, I love him, he's supposed to marry me, your mother wants you to marry me and he hates me," she grinned, "this is a fine mess we've all gotten ourselves into, no?"
Nickolas eyed her warily, the impression he had gotten from Dimitri about her was that Magda was nothing short of downright evil but something she had said bothered him, "do you really love him?"
Magda stopped stretching and the smile disappeared from her face faster than lightning.
"Yes, I do." She said quietly, "I don't want to marry you any more than you want to marry me, I want to marry him but I know he hates me and that's mostly," she ran her hands through her long hair, "okay completely, my fault. But I've loved him a long time and I was very happy that I would get to be with him."
Nickolas felt slightly guilty, he felt like he had stolen her chance with Dimitri even though he knew that was ridiculous for a multitude of reasons. The first being that Dimitri was completely gay, the second being that Nickolas hadn't asked Dimitri to fall in love with him –he was still having a hard time believing it himself-, the third being that Magda had known him first, she'd had her chance and she'd blown it, the fourth being that he hadn't been involved with Dimitri running away and meeting him, that had been total chance.
And the fifth being that Dimitri hated her. As in a lot.
But he still felt bad, unrequited love sucked.
"I'm sorry," he said quietly, Magda just wrinkled her nose.
"It's okay, it's not like it was your fault." She said, echoing his previous thoughts.
"But what do you plan to do about it?" Asked Nickolas. All she had to do was tell his parents who Dimitri really was and then she could have him dragged all the way back to Romania where he would have to marry her whether he liked it or not, and from what he'd heard about her from Dimitri she was prone to exactly those kinds of petty vengeances.
Nickolas's mouth tightened, he didn't like to admit it but right now they were both completely at her mercy.
"Me?" Magda laughed, "I think the question is, what are you planning to do about it?"
"I have to go back to my room and talk this out with Dimitri," Nickolas said, that was the obvious.
Magda nodded, "yeah, and you might want to do it now. As in right now, I'm not so sure you and I are the only ones here who know Dimitri's dirty little secret."
"What? You told someone?!" Geez, she really was petty, wasn't she?
Magda shook her head, "no, but you might've. Hey, next time you yell out 'Jesus Christ Dimitri, you have a fucking fiancée!' could you do it a little louder? I don't think they heard you over in England."
Nickolas cursed and ran off to find Dimitri. Magda smiled and, sighed, shaking her head, "men…"
The previously mentioned Romanian Prince was pacing around Nickolas's large bedroom; he needed to know where the other Prince was, what was he thinking right now?
He'd said he loved Dimitri, still, that he couldn't help but love him. But he was obviously confused and upset as well. Where had he gone? What was he thinking?
The door creaked open, "I'm back," Nickolas said quietly, shutting the door behind him. Dimitri wheeled around, well, that answered one of his questions, he now knew where Nickolas was. But he still didn't know what he was thinking.
"I see," he said noncommittally, heart rate picking up.
The two young men avoided each others eyes awkwardly, meeting the other person's gaze uncertainly and then glancing away the second they did so.
"Can we…talk?" Nickolas asked finally, his voice quiet, shoving his hands into his pants pockets.
"Sure," Dimitri practically leapt at the chance.
The two of them took seats in the living room that adjoined Nickolas's bedroom in thick plush chairs beside a small table, and then they went back to avoiding each other's eyes.
Nickolas's hand twitched, like he'd wanted to reach out and grab Dimitri's but thought better of it.
"I'm sorry I flipped out like that." Nickolas said finally, "I know I said I wouldn't get mad or upset but I did."
Dimitri laughed easily, "You had every right."
Nickolas shrugged one shoulder, "I meant what I said though, I love you, or at least I love the you I now know. Is that really the real you?"
"Yes," said Dimitri without hesitation, "this is the real me. Mina was the real me, she was just a girl. And not as complicated."
Despite himself Nickolas snickered and the corner of his mouth pulled up, "you're complicated?"
"Oh I'm deep man, you have no idea," said Dimitri, grinning. They both chuckled.
"I love you, I love the way you laugh, the way you're always happy, you make everything around you brighter, I love that. You're smart and funny and kind and actually kinda perfect," Nickolas said honestly, "I love you, boy or girl it doesn't matter to me."
Dimitri looked at him for a long second and then a huge grin spit his face, "great, because I love you too!"
Nickolas smiled.
For hours and hours they talked, they told each other everything, the good, the bad, the ugly, no detail was left out. The two of them got to know each other, no more hold backs, no more lies, they completely opened up to one and another, fully and finally.
When Dimitri went to sleep that night, safe and comfortable, Nickolas breathing quietly on the other side of the bed, he was sure that nothing could go wrong now.
When they awoke Dimitri and Nickolas just hung out in the brunet's room, they watched TV, they chatted, and they didn't even bother to leave the room, they were perfectly content in each other's company.
But their happiness didn't last, they'd called Roderich to update him on the situation and let him know they were getting their asses out of there but something happened to change the situation drastically.
It started when Nickolas's mother and father called them into see them. Alone.
Or they thought they were alone, Magda was lurking behind Nickolas's mother's chair when the two of them entered the King and Queen's personal study. She looked worried, the King and Queen looked furious.
"Nickolas," Queen Krasimira said, her voice clipped, there was an opened envelope that was covering a letter on the small round table between the King and Queen. Dimitri's eyes honed in on it like it was a beacon, suddenly he had a very bad feeling about this.
"Mother," Nickolas said back in a bland voice, giving nothing away.
His mother looked ready to murder someone, "our intelligence officers over the continent have turned up some very interesting news about the real identity of your pretty female companion." She turned her sharp hazel gaze on the blond, looking triumphant.
"Crown Prince Dimitri Drakulya of Romania."
Nickolas's heart stuttered to a halt but Dimitri couldn't help but give a wry smile, man, I am so glad that I already told Nickolas everything, this would have been a nasty way for him to find out.
Dimitri's eyes met Magda's and she shook her head, their finding out had not been her doing, though she had already taken steps…
"Something to say, my Prince?" Asked Krasimira mockingly, seeing Dimitri's smile.
He bowed to her, "my Lady, please forgive my deceit," he said formally, "it was not my wish to lie to either you or your son but…certain circumstances forced my hand." He glanced at Magda and she gave a half-hearted shrug of apology.
Krasimira's triumphant smile didn't falter, she had searched for information, something to use against this little vixen that had shown up out of nowhere and ruined all of her plans, what she had found exceeded all of her wildest dreams.
She glanced at Magda standing behind her husband's chair, she was an odd one too. Despite all of her claims to be madly and possessively in love with Prince Dimitri she had either not recognised him or had recognised him and said nothing. Either way it didn't look like she cared about him very much.
That being said she did still want him so, Krasimira smirked, Magda wouldn't be able to marry Nickolas. But neither would 'Mina.'
Just then a messenger ran in with another letter, "ma'm, this just arrived," he said, bowing to her, "apparently it's about her," he glanced at Dimitri, "err, him."
She took the letter and read it, her face changed abruptly from smug to furious. Her husband stood and read the letter over he shoulder, then he whistled.
"Well, somebody pulled some serious strings, looks like Prince Dimitri is no longer under any obligation to marry Magda. Looks like he's free to go Kras."
Dimitri blinked, surprised, who would do that for him? Roderich maybe would try to arrange something like that. But Roderich didn't have that kind of authority in Romania.
Over the King and Queen's head Magda Funar very obviously met Dimitri's eyes and winked.
Dimitri stared, stunned, just when you think you know someone…
"Well, it's been fun everyone," he said lightly, "but I'm out. I think I've overstayed my welcome."
He turned to leave, Nickolas turned with him.
"Nickolas," his mother began.
He turned around again, "I'm twenty years old mother, I'm under no obligation to listen you. You lost the right to tell me what to do when you told me I wasn't your son because of my sexuality. We're leaving."
"Bye Magda!" Dimitri chirped, waving.
"Bye Dimitri," she said warmly, waving back.
He and Nickolas left, the brunet put an arm around the blond's shoulders, "come on, let's get outta here before we're forced to marry the same woman."
Dimitri grinned, "yeah, let's go home."
