Hello my lovelies,
For the first time since forever it hasn't taken me forever to finally update and I'm glad for that. This chapter is more a filler chapter to take the story to the level I've wanted so if it's suck, i do apologize.
Do tell me what you think by reviewing or PM-ing or if you have any question whatsoever, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer.
If any of you read Blue Butterfly, I'm sorry if I haven't updated in a while, inspiration hasn't struck yet again so be patient with me. On that note, I don't have any means to abandon the story.
Now without further or do...
When they arrived in Mystic Falls, it was well past midnight. They could have arrived sooner if it weren't for Caroline trying to stop Klaus every step of the way, she even tried to tackle Klaus to the ground to stop the hybrid from running.
They had been running a good five mile when Caroline suddenly jumped, yanking Klaus back with her. Klaus had retaliated before they both fell backwards but Caroline tried overthrowing him again by jumping his shoulder. When none of her attempts had worked, she tried ripping his veins off. She knew they couldn't go back to Mystic Falls but no one had listened to her. Stefan and Rebekah helped threw Caroline from Klaus shoulder when she tried to bite him, her last hope at stopping them but they were too fast. But at the end, she did slow them down, when Caroline had bitten Stefan's arm.
It wasn't a fatal bite, she wasn't a werewolf but it drew enough blood to hurt. Stefan had scream but otherwise the younger Salvatore hadn't done anything else. He glared at Caroline for a split second, Caroline expected him to attack her or maybe insult her but nothing happened. For a split second she'd been afraid, it didn't matter that she was stronger than she'd been before, Stefan still had a hundred years on her and far more experience. Stefan had flashed away, followed by Rebekah trying to help him.
Klaus had merely looked at her, annoyance clear on his face before compelling her to shut up, picking her up once again and flashing away.
If Caroline was honest with herself, which she wasn't, she would admit that being on Klaus' back while he ran, the cold Virginian wind blowing her curls away and the heat from his body radiating to her, was nice. She felt safe, a feeling she hadn't felt for a long time.
She'd been constantly running, moving from cities to cities, mostly big cities where she could come and go unnoticed, where nobody would question anything if she someday disappeared. And yet she'd abandoned her rules a few weeks ago when she came back to Mystic Falls. She'd thought they were here. Every information she'd conduct had led her to that conclusion and yet when she arrived, she couldn't find them anywhere. There were trails though, one that might or might not be from them. She knew it was a long shot but she'd been desperate. Her deduction had led her to believe that they were staying on the dark side of the forest, one that rarely seen daylight with the shady trees and big branches. From her little chat with one of the cops, she'd gathered there were some big caves, big enough for people to hide in.
She'd suspected they were going to be there. But when she'd gone there, she didn't find who she was looking for, instead she saw one of those mystical hounds. She didn't believe in werewolves when she were human but Dark Hounds were supposed to be legends for vampires. Dark Hounds were far more vicious than any werewolf she'd ever seen. They didn't had a conscience or a heart, they attacked anything they saw, except their own trainers. Dark Magic users were the one who usually trained Dark Hounds but she hadn't seen anybody near that area since she'd arrived.
And there had been three of them.
Dark Hounds had red-blood eyes, nose that could sense its prey within ten-mile radius, teeth that could tear you up in a second. They had dark blue or brown skin, and claws that could rip out her veins in a second. She'd thought that Dark Hounds would look like werewolves but when she'd gotten there, she'd seen dogs. Big dogs at that but still dogs. To humans, they may seemed like normal dogs but she knew better. Dark Hounds smelled like dead bodies and cold blood, a smell that her heightened senses easily picked up.
The Hound nearest her had barred it teeth, saliva dripping from its open mouth. Dark Hounds were supposed to only showed up at night, or at least that was what one of the witches had told her in her travels. But she'd arrived around two and the three creatures had looked at her like she was a piece of a juicy steak. She froze, staring at the creatures with fear clear from both her eyes. The Hounds stared at her, each taking a step closer to her. She flashed away as fast as she could but then one of the Hounds caught up with her and she fell to the ground.
She knew one of them had bitten her, she'd felt the sharp pain when the Hound's teeth had pierced her skin. She was supposed to be dead. Dark Hounds' bite were more fatal than any kind of bites and there were no cure for the bite.
The last thing she'd heard was her own scream.
But when she'd woken up, she'd been lying on a huge California King bed. Before long Katherine and Elijah had entered and they had explained how they found her. From the trail of bloods, then the weird broken-down cottage. She knew they didn't move her, so who did?
And then, without even thinking about it, she'd asked about Klaus. She'd been thinking of him, not always but he was always on her mind. A lot of things reminded her of him but she didn't know where he was and she didn't have the guts to look for him.
He was a man from the past, the past she didn't dare go back to. Too many unanswered question she needed answers to, too much at stake. She'd always thought she would look for him one day, both of them had forever. But in the back of her mind, she wished it didn't take too long. She didn't want him to forget about her.
But here he was now, still holding onto her as the view of his mansion came into view. Their entire journey to Mystic Falls had been silent but she hadn't felt uncomfortable. She'd welcomed the silence as she thought what happened over the course of the last few weeks, the feel of his dead-heartbeat against her arm surprisingly keeping her calm.
"You wanna tell me what that was all about?" He broke the silence.
She stared at him. "Huh?"
"With the biting and everything?"
She shrugged. "Nothing."
He sighed, feet slowing down. "It's never nothing, Caroline. Something's on your mind."
"So what? There's no rule where I have to tell you everything I thought about."
He had a melancholy look on his face. "You used to tell me everything though."
"People change, Klaus. You did too. And it's not like you've been waiting for me."
He let her down as they walked across the lawn to reach his front door. They walked silently as Caroline's word sunk in. She knew it was the wrong thing to say when she saw she'd hurt him. She didn't meant it to sound so evil, she was gone for six years and she couldn't tell him what happened in that six years, not that he'd ever understand if she'd told him.
But the hurt was quickly replaced by the cold facade she knew all too well. "I did wait, Caroline," Klaus said quietly. He tucked a finger to her chin, forcing her to look at him. "For three years I did everything I could to find you. I didn't stop when people said it was hopeless, I didn't stop when your mother told me you're dead, I didn't stop when every lead I found was another dead end."
"But you did stop at last," she said quietly.
"After three fucking years! I had everyone looking for you. You were non-existence and everyone except me had stopped looking. What did you expect?"
"Absolutely nothing."
He looked at her, searching her face. "No, you wanted me to find you, didn't you?"
She shrugged.
"Were you dead Caroline? Or did Silas made that up?" He finally voiced the question that had been plaguing his mind ever since he laid eyes on her a few days ago.
The soft expression on Caroline's face was quickly replaced by a cold one, mirroring his own. "I was."
"Then how are-"
She cut him off. "It doesn't matter. We can talk about this next time. What matters is someone tried to kill us today."
He chuckled darkly. "Technically they didn't plan to kill us. They can't kill us with some silly car crash."
"If we were inside that car when it exploded we could!" She glared.
He knew she had a point, but he wasn't going to back down that easily.
"Maybe. Maybe not. But we got out didn't we?"
"By a few seconds!"
"What is it that you want Caroline?"
"What I want is-" she stopped herself, clearing her throat. He had a feeling she was about to talk about them before she stopped herself, but he wasn't pressing her. "What I know is that we need to find whoever did the crazy massacre as fast as we can."
He raised an eyebrow. "I'll get some guys down here to help us if you tell me what happened in those years that you went missing."
Klaus knew she wasn't going to talk unless he made her. And so he did. He'd planned to call some people from the French Quarters to help them so it wouldn't change anything if she objected, but he wasn't going to tell her that.
"Are we still on that?" She said exasperatedly.
He smirked. "Apparently we are."
She stared at him, glaring him down as if he would change his mind. At last she at she nodded. "Fine but I'll tell you after we found whoever did this."
"You drive a hard bargain," he baited.
But she wasn't having any of it. "Take it or leave it."
"You have my word," he said. "But I expect a long explanation when this is all over."
She glared at him as she strode pass him to the entrance of his mansion, kicking the door open before one of Elijah's maid had any time to open it for her. The girl looked petrified but so would he if he saw her expression.
He followed suit, a small smile playing on his lips. He gave an apologetic smile to the maid who looked at Caroline's retreating back with wide eyes. They were so alike sometimes he knew she was his somewhat soulmate-if he believed in those sort of things. He could recall some unpleasant moment when he would strode inside his then-mansion with blood staining his shirt, a dark expression sent to whoever dared to cross his path. But unlike Caroline he would follow the glares with a threat or an actual kill.
But then a piercing scream resounded around the house and without thinking, he flashed to the kitchen where he suspected Caroline's scream had came from.
What he saw inside the kitchen wasn't something he was prepared to see. Finn and Sage were both seated on the black stools Rebekah's vampire of a designer friend had scattered around the kitchen island when Klaus had built this mansion. Both dressed in leather and jeans, with smirks on their faces, an expression that showed they knew something everyone in the room didn't. Elijah was pacing around with a glass of scotch on his hand, his charcoal Tom Ford free of wrinkles, a permanent frown on his big face. Katerina stood next to the big window, an expression of wonder and astonishment clouding her face. She was dressed in a tight leather dress, a red jacket dangling from her shoulder, a pair black pumps with chains and studs accentuated her feet. For a moment he wondered how a woman like her and Caroline would want to walk in a pair of death traps. And then he remembered Caroline, she stood frozen on the archway that connected the kitchen to the dinning room, her scatterbrained of an outfit looked out of place, but the blood and the don't-fuck-with-me look on her face was fierce enough to make him smile.
He'd forgotten about the weird phone call with Finn but now, seeing his supposedly-dead brother smirking at him and everyone else in the room, an arm draped over Sage's shoulder, his hair shorter than he'd ever seen over the years, he didn't understand how he could have forgotten.
Caroline had crossed her arm in front of her chest, causing her ruined leather jacket to bunch up, causing the other occupants of the room to notice the scratch and blood on her once-beautiful dress. Everyone stared at her wounds and raised an eyebrow. She glared at Katherine, frowning at Sage and Finn then staring at him with a look that would kill him if he were a mere human.
He shrugged, walking inside the tension-filled room with a relax stance when all he wanted was to know how the bloody hell his brother and his significant other was alive.
He'd witnessed Finn's death, he didn't remember it as clearly as he would have liked but Finn's death didn't hurt him as Kol's did. Deep down he always thought Finn deserved to die for the stunt he'd pulled with his bitch of a mother. Finn had looked calmer and less suicidal than he'd remembered, he knew at some point, Mikael's word had struck to him. He somehow believed that vampires weren't supposed to be alive, that they were all creatures from hell. Maybe that was what drove him to be apart of his mother's evil plan.
"Niklaus, good to see you and your little girlfriend here can make it," Finn drawled, a hint of amusement dancing between his eyes.
Caroline turned to glared at him but didn't say anything. He could tell she was somewhat intimidated with his brother, or she was smart enough to not anger Sage anymore than she needed to. Katherine smirked at Caroline, but it was his turn to glare at him.
"Good to be here brother. Now do tell me how you are here."
Finn smirked at him. "Now, now. Let us enjoy dinner first than we'll talk family business."
He mentioned to the wine glasses scattered along the island. He hadn't noticed the glasses before but from the scent he'd caught, it was a mixture of blood and wine. Sweet and tangy with the smothering richness of the blood. Some of the glasses were half-empty, while the three of them were full. Sage stood up, handing Caroline one with a sweet smile that made Caroline rolled her eyes, Finn handed one over to him.
"I had dinner with Klaus and Stefan," Caroline said coldly to Sage, not reaching for the glass. He eyed the glass warily while Finn chuckled.
"This is not just wine, dear one. I'd mixed it with human blood," he said. "And now to brush down all of that blood, my lovely Sage here had made us her famous chocolate mousse."
As if on cue, one of Elijah's maid, this one a blonde with green eyes and freckles on her rosy cheeks walked in, a tray of desserts on her hands and a glass of wine tucked between her fingers. Finn nodded to the girl, gesturing to the island and the girl soon had placed the for all of them. She handed the bottle to Katherine who snatched it without a second thought.
Finn looked at him with a smirk, his own glass near his lips. "There's no need to be wary of me, Niklaus. I assure you, I haven't added any kind of poison in it. We're here for a civil gathering." Klaus just scowled at him.
Katherine grabbed the glass dessert the maid had set down, scooping a little with her spoon. "When did you have time to do all of this?" She asked Sage.
"We've been here for days, Katerina. Sage had made it last night in our house."
That perked up Klaus' interest. "You have a house here?"
"Oh we've just leased this small bungalow near the town square," Sage smiled at him.
That intrigued him even more. Finn and Sage were already here for days? Why were they here? Why did they have a house? Why are they here now? But before he'd voiced his confusion, Caroline had spoken up.
"Okay what the hell is going on?!" Caroline shouted. She pointed at Finn. "You're the Original brother that did the freaky link spell on the Mikaelson Ball and you were dead. How are you alive?"
Elijah, who had been quiet throughout the whole ordeal, finally spoke up. "Yes, do tell us more about it brother," he said to Finn. "And I do believe the lovely Miss Sage was one of your creation. From what I gathered from Kol, once someone killed an Original, all of the vampires they turned would be dead along with them."
"That's correct," Finn said.
Klaus drained his glass of wine then stalked to Finn. "I've finished my bloody dinner, dear brother, now please elaborate how in all hell are you alive?"
But then he didn't get the answers he wanted as they all heard the front door being slammed and Rebekah's constant bickering to a silent Stefan Salvatore.
"Niklaus?!" Rebekah's shouted.
He looked at the archway leading to the hallway, not doing anything causing Finn to nudge him in the shoulder impatiently. "In the kitchen, dear sister."
And before they knew it, Rebekah and Stefan had flashed into the kitchen. Rebekah looked more put together than Caroline did, the blood stains on her body and clothes had been washed and she had her hair pulled back in a ponytail. They probably had stopped somewhere along the way to change Rebekah out of her dirty clothes, his sister now sporting a pair of black trousers and a white shirt, Klaus jacket folded between her arms. Stefan had a permanent scowl on his face and he avoided looking at Caroline's direction. For a moment Klaus thought how Elijah should have been Stefan's brother, not Damon. They had a similar brooding expression, the kind of wisdom that thought before they do or say anything.
Rebekah strolled inside, grabbed the unattended glass of wine and taking a large gulp. As she noticed her surroundings, another scream reverberated around the house, followed by Katherine snort.
"Finn? How in all hell are you alive?"
And then the room went black.
Thank you for reading, see you next chapter.
Xoxo, M
