Chapter: 14
Silence surrounded Claire and Wesker, the car trip seemed to be at no end, their car fuel tank was halfway through.
Claire didn't long for sleep at all, the event alone being traumatising, hell, everything throughout her journey since stepping into the French land seemed traumatic to the average person.
Civilisation seemed light years away, the dark forest engulfing their vehicle, the headlights of Wesker's car only illuminating the one path way out of the desolate region.
*Ring ring*
Chris Redfield bustled around his small apartment, being sleep deprived had totalled him, making him a mess, literally, everything surrounding him was shambled. Jill left when she knew he finally was asleep for the night. His 5 o'clock shadow was no more un attractive stubs.
Passing the unkempt dishes, he reached for the house phone.
"Hello?" His ruffed morning voice groaned, whipping a bit of sleep from his eyes he yawned.
"Redfield." Instantly straightening his posture at the sound of his commander, Chris spoke with much more energy than before.
"Yes chief?"
"I need you to head to headquarters ASAP. And bring Valentine with you." With that a click was heard through the caller's side and then the dial tone.
"Awe hell." Chris sighed, slumping his posture and dialing Jill's number now, preparing for the worst.
"Dear heart, why so solemn?" More than 4 hours later Wesker asked, they were now a quart away from running out of gas. Claire turned her head toward the window, her desire not to answer the impending question, she didn't know what did or didn't bother her anymore, whether she should be accustomed to these things now or not.
Suddenly Wesker's gloves hands gripped onto the wheel, Claire hearing the leather crunch, turned to look at Wesker's clenched jaw.
"Seems like we have company dear heart." With this statement, the back windshield began to shed light finally making it visible to see inside their car not with just the dashboard lights and stereo that seemed to have been in a stalled throughout the whole trip.
"Maybe their just pass byers." Wesker scoffed at Claire's statement, Claire sunk deeper into the leather seats upon hearing the sarcastic laughter.
"Yes, indeed, at this time, on this road, pass byers. Did I ever mention how much I admire your humor dear heart?" Looking back Claire sees the car gaining speed in order to catch up with them. Wesker pushing faster to evade their tailgating.
"Spread your legs." Wesker didn't take his eyes off the road when he said this, Claire's widened at the statement.
"Wesker, what the hell has gotten into you? Were being chased and your telling me to spread my legs, are you-" Claire's body was pushed forward, the car chasing them bumped into the back of theirs.
"Just listen to me, Redfield." Wesker spoke with slight annoyance, obeying Claire widened her legs.
Wesker reached inside his coat pocket and pulled a dagger out, stabbing it through the leather seats. Ripping the leather seats apart, he pulled out a glock.
"Oh." Wesker nodded sarcastically with Claire's comment, handing her the glock.
"Now what I want you to do, is be a good girl and shoot the driver."
Incredulously, Claire looked at Wesker her eyebrows furrowed in.
"Just do as I say." Demanding for complete success, Claire nodded.
"I'm sure they're armed also, so be do be a little more cautious; for your own benifit." A dark chuckle drew deep from Wesker's chest. Claire grimaced at this, holding the gun in her hand.
'Let's hope Chris's training has paid off.'
Claire thought as she was lowering the passengers window. With half of Claire's body inside the car and half of her outside, she raised the gun, her good hand supporting it the most.
'Alright Claire, it's either you or them, and you want to live long enough to see your brother and friends again right?'Claire took a deep breath at her thoughts.
'Clean cut shot, and you're home free.'
Aiming down she focused on where the driver side, which she remembered in European cars was on the right side instead of the left. The car was gaining on them, which meant Claire could get an even better shot.
"Alright Claire, today were going to learn the basic's on guns." Chris's voice flooded Claire's mind.
"You have to grab the gun with a tight grip so the recoil doesn't hit you in the face and break your nose or something."Chris chuckled, helping Claire, who wasn't accustomed to guns at the moment holding the slightly heavy weapon tilted down. On that comment Claire gripped the gun, setting it straight forward, aiming.
"You always have to be careful with guns. Even when you think you have total control over them, you really don't."
"Alright Claire, just spread your legs a bit more and fire." Claire looked down on the target, which in this case was a tin can and fired, firing just above it, not knocking it down.
"Don't worry about it sis," Chris saw Claire's slightly disappointed face, giving small encouragement. "With practice you'll get it down, you did better than I did my first time."
"Chris, when do you know when to shoot though?" Claire asked when she handed the handgun back to her older brother tucking a strand of stray hair behind her ear.
"You'll know when the time is right."
Claire held her breathe, making aiming a bit easier.
On instinct Claire fired, the shot hit just like her first shot. Too above. With annoyance Claire began fire rapidly, only one shot hitting the drivers arm.
Almost as if Wesker read her mind, he handed her a full clip of rounds, Claire exchanging the two with only a little trouble from her injury.
Claire poked out again from the window, only to be met with sound of a whizzing bullets.
Wesker pulled on her shirt, pulling her back into the vehicle.
"Buckle yourself." Without think Claire did so. Upon hearing the 'click' the safety belt made, Wesker stomped on the brakes. Send both of their bodies forward in the sudden stop in momentum. Claire's stomach pressed painfully against the belt buckle, her body slamming back into the seat, same as Wesker's. Claire braced herself for the crash that was inevitably going to happen behind them. And indeed another bounce forward sent their bodies forward, along with the car, sending the sleek black sedan to cut through a railing, their car hanging half on land half off the ledge. Claire leaned forward to see the steep fall, a forest connected to a river down below. Feeling their vehicle lean forward Claire let out a yelp.
"Try and keep calm, dear heart." Wesker hushed, not being fazed at all by the drop.
"Keep calm?!" Claire exclaimed, her body shivering in fear and anger. "My life is on a thin wire right now, and you want me to keep calm?!"
The car tipping a little further ahead, Claire had tiny drops of tears dripping down her chin now.
"I don't want to die."
Claire looked back to see their assailants blood splattered against the windshield, their airbags deploying but all the too late. Claire gulped her fear the car creaking, giving hint it was going to give way at any moment now.
"Wesker." She spoke, looking down at her doom instead of him.
"Yes?" He drawled, a relaxed composure, one which only a few had a chance to witness.
"If I die, tell Chris that I loved him, and tell Jill that she had and will always be like my older sister."
Wesker laughed, whatever humor he found in the situation, he let out a genuine laugh. Not agreeing to Claire's death wish.
With that laugh the car gave way. With the fall in mid air, Claire let out a blood curdling scream. Claire felt strong arms embrace her, and heard glass shatter, she was now falling at extreme speeds down to earth, but instead of her herself falling, someone else embraced her, the intoxicating scent of something sweet and inviting filled her nostrils, almost as if comforting her. In fear Claire fainted in the middle of the drop, her body went slump in Wesker's arms when he gracefully landed onto the ground, still embracing the young starlet in his arms.
His suit jacket swayed open in the wind, his sunglasses neatly placed against the bridge of his nose, the moons light shined against them.
He leaned the young girl against a tree nearby, sighing, he held a flash drive in his hand.
'At the very least I have back ups.'
Remember all his other back ups for information, frowning at the fiery mess his vehicle and enemies bodies fueled, remembering his laptop was inside the car. He turned his frown deepened at the unconscious woman.
"I'll teach you the proper way of shooting a gun, unlike your sensless brother." He exasperated to himself, remembering the gun firing exchange between the conflicting parties.
'You're still a useful asset.'
Rushing to hq wasn't all that new, at any moment, Chris and Jill both knew they could be called on duty. By 5 a.m they both entered the building in curiosity, rushing toward their commanding officers office. Sleep was still in Jill's eyes, but Chris was wide awake, minus the bags under his eyes.
"Finally." Their commander welcomed them. Motioning them to take a seat, they both sat in individual arm chairs, facing the work desk of their chief, a computer that sat in front in front of their captain, and a few screens proved a background for him.
"I called you both here due to a biological attack in the European Area, France." He folded his hand resting his chin on top of his knuckles.
"I want you bot-" he paused and looked at Chris's face. "Dear god Redfield what happened to you." Chris looked toward his Chief in disillusionment.
"Nothing chief, it's just been some rough nights you know?" Chris cleared his throat, now leaning forward to but his eyes fell just in time for Jill to see the slight the slight frown on Chris's face.
"Alright, when anyways I want you two both since you're familiar with this type of work so see what's going on over there, if the locals are hostile, protect yourselves at all cost." These words made the trip a bit clear that there was going to be more than likely a predicament.
"Your plane leaves in 2 days. Your both dismissed." With this the duo walked out of the office.
"Chris," Jill said when they were outside of the department building and in the lobby. "Sleep, your going to need it." Her brown hair fell as she looked at the ground.
"I know it's been hard, but Claire is out there still, I know it, I feel it." Trying to allay his fear, Jill looked up to meet his soft brown eyes. With a small smile Chris replied.
"Yeah Jill, I know she is."
