Tausert

Tausert was a young adult in the village. I'm not certain how she got there-she wasn't related to anyone in the Kul Elna that I knew of, or if she was, they were estranged. She was a volatile woman, always starting fights with the village elder Nakht and other adults in the area. I was only a toddler for many of them, so I have no idea what sort of arguments they were to this day-my parents never explained to Me.

From what I can tell, the only reason she was allowed to live with us was because she was the best damned Thief in the village. (We didn't pool our resources, but it was to no one's advantage to hoard gold-one of us would find out sooner or later, and either the money would start disappearing bit by bit because of one's fellow Thieves, or we would all hold an bullying sort of intervention. That is, we'd show up at the rich man's door all in a group and threaten him until he handed over the money for us to share~ It sounds crude, but it was a good system to prevent complete anarchy, since most villagers chose to just share the loot whenever they had a particularly good heist. We only had to resort to such measures a handful of times in My memory.) Tausert, unlike most of us, was well-rounded as a Thief, not focusing only on pickpocketing or palace heists or tomb raiding or stealing from businesses. She was good at them all. Even though she was cranky as hell to us children-calling us brats or worse, never by our names-we all admired her as much as we feared her. In that respect, she was My role model.

H-heh heh heh. She gave Me a black eye once. I had followed her all the way to one of the cities. I realize now that she must have known I was there and decided not to abandon Me to the desert, but I thought I had been sneaky enough for her to not realize I was there until we were in the city streets. At that point I confronted her, threatening to expose her as a pickpocket unless she shared some of the money and showed Me how to do it better than any of the other children. That was how I got the black eye. Even so and despite her refusal to help, we stayed within sight of each other until the sun went down and we journeyed back to Kul Elna. I think we shared a few beers then too, although she was scowling all the way home.
