CHAPTER SIX

MARCH 5, 1960

Will noticed that Billy Maguire was struggling with his schoolwork so he invited him to join their study group.

It was a Saturday afternoon and everyone was over Will's house. Amazingly Will was one of the first ones to finish his homework and was currently skimming through his old Navy manual when he noticed something.

"Uh oh!" Will replied and everyone looked up.

"What's wrong?" Walter asked.

"Well according to this I might not be able to join the Navy because I'm five pounds underweight!" Will replied pouting.

"Well you always were Mr. Beanpole!" Daisy McClaren replied from her seat.

"Daisy!" Her twin sister Dora chastised her and gave her a look.

"Wait let me see that!" Billy replied as he got up and took the book from Will and looked at the front and back of the book and at the chart Will was looking at. "This is an old copy. According to my copy your at the right weight for your height!"

"Oh!" Will replied taking the book back from Billy. "Thank you!"

"No problem!" Billy replied as he sat back down.

MAY 27, 1960

Will, his study group and everyone's parent sat in the assembly hall in shock as Principal Doyle explained that they were all named valedictorians. They were to talk amongst themselves to choose the head speakers. The parents drove home while the group walked home talking.

"Will I think that you should give the speech!" Walter replied and everyone agreed.

"What really I don't know!" Will replied as his ears went red.

"Yes really!" Skinny replied. "Out of all of us you have improved the most by working the hardest. We know you can do this. We'll even help you with your speech."

"But I'm not very good at public speaking!" Will replied nervously.

"It's real simple!" Fatso replied. "Just pretend your a Naval Captain speaking to your men before going into battle!"

"Why can't it be men and women before they go into battle?" Will asked.

"Women aren't allowed in combat!" Farrell replied sighing.

"Women can do anything men can do!" Will replied. "And there's the women pilots of WWII!"

"All right your a Naval Captain speaking to your men and women before going into battle!" Fatso replied sighing and pinching the bridge of his nose. "Now let's get to work Valedictorian Will!"

A/N: Last year in a town in Oregon a high school had 21 Valedictorians.
