CONGRATULATIONS TO…
Broconi!
(I removed this contest from the previous chapter as someone obviously has already won it.) I am very surprised! I didn't expect anyone to be able to guess question number 5, and therefore be unable to answer number 6. Perhaps they took a wild guess?
Alright, don't get mad, I made questions 5 and 6 with barely any hints for a reason. I didn't want the answers to be so easy to find that the first person who goes on the chapter would automatically win. Everyone had a decent chance.
Now… Broconi and I will have to do some scheming…
DISCLAIMER: DO YOU HAVE TO TORTURE ME WITH THIS QUESTION EACH CHAPTER? NO. NO, NO, NO, NO, NO! I DO NOT OWN DANNY PHANTOM! NOR WILL I EVER OWN DANNY PHANTOM!
A terrifyingly loud growl escaped from the green figure's throat. It bared its teeth in a warning gesture. Not only meaning "Stay back, I'm warning you," but more along the lines of "MAKE ONE MOVE AND I'LL RIP YOU TO SHREDS!" Quite seriously based on the glowing beast's massive size and large teeth.
Johnny 13 and Kitty both took a shocked step backwards.
"Good doggy?" Johnny said weakly.
His only response was an even louder growl.
"Fine," Johnny muttered, reforming his expression into an 'in control' angry expression. "Shadow, attack!"
The black spot on the group suddenly erupted into the air and scowled. It soared forward and attempted to slash at the ghost dog's side. His attempt was foiled by a massive clawed paw swinging down on top of him and pinning him to the ground. Shadow easily slipped out from under the paw, and shot intangibly upwards and through the ghost dog. He managed to slice deep gashes on the ghost dog's left side before being swatted away. As he attempted to go in for another attack, the ghost dog gripped him tightly in his jaws and shook him roughly before flinging Shadow back at Johnny and Kitty, effectively knocking the unprepared ghosts backwards and onto their backs. They both groaned and attempted to get up before Johnny's slightly damaged motorcycle came flying through the air and fell on them. They gasped in pain before Johnny turned the three of them intangible and pulled them up through the fallen motorcycle. One more glance at the huge, growling ghost dog was enough to finally convince them to flee.
Shadow began another charge at the drooling, growling ghost dog before Johnny gave him another command and he changed course.
"Shadow, come!"
As the sound of the motorcycle's engine filled the air, the ghost dog charged. Johnny quickly drove off as the large ghost's jaws snapped shut on empty air mere inches behind them.
The class took a few steps back as the glowing beast turned its gaze upon them. Its eyes wandered over the group, stopping on Danny. A large, protective growl shook the air as the dog charged toward them. All of the people standing in its path took quick steps backwards and to the side except for Jazz, Tucker, and Sam.
The dog skidded to a stop and put its massive nose next to Danny face. It sniffed him a few times before looking at Sam. It tilted its head at her.
"He'll be fine, Cujo," Sam stated calmly in response to the questioning gesture. The dog smiled and wagged its tail. He gave a large lick to Danny's face before turning back into his puppy form. The now small and adorable Cujo bounded up next to Sam and leaped onto Danny's chest. Cujo began to repeatedly lick Danny's face until he got a response in the form of an annoyed groan.
"Danny!" Maddie exclaimed, and rushed forward. She grabbed a small (yet dangerous-looking) ecto-gun from inside one of her many unseen pockets in her HAZMAT suit. Thinking the ghostly puppy was harming her son, Maddie ordered "Get away from my son you filthy ectoplasmic blob!"
As the ecto-gun whined as it powered up, Tucker and Jazz put their hands in front of the small puppy in a defensive gesture.
"Mom, no!" Jazz yelled, but it was too late. Cujo understood one thing. There was a weapon pointed straight at him and his young master, Danny. Thinking that Maddie planned on harming Danny, Cujo stepped off of Danny's chest, and grew in size until he was a massive, growling, drooling beast.
Sam, Jazz, and Tucker jumped to their feet and got in between Cujo and Maddie. Sam faced Cujo (Cujo knew Sam most out of the three of them), while Tucker and Jazz faced Maddie.
"Mom/Maddie NO!" Tucker and Jazz exclaimed.
"Cujo, leave it!" Sam ordered the threatened canine. In response, Cujo took a step back and moved his paw so that he was standing protectively over Danny.
"Mom, please, let me explain," Jazz pleaded.
"… Er… Um… Alright…" Maddie answered uncertainly. This trip had already shown how much she didn't know about her son, so… What if her daughter knew something important. It'd be best to find out. I DO need to try trusting Jazz more…
"Turn off your weapon and take three steps back. You need to show Cujo that you mean no harm. Give him his space." Jazz demanded.
Maddie decided to trust her daughter and did as she was told. "Now then, EXPLAIN."
"Well," Sam interjected, "Maddie, meet Cujo, and Cujo, meet Maddie."
"Thank you Sam." Jazz said sarcastically. "Anyway, Cujo is a ghost dog that always manages to get out of the Ghost Zone. All he wanted to do was find his squeaky toy. Danny Phantom kept trying to keep Cujo in the Ghost Zone, but it was no use. He REALLY wanted his toy. The ghost dog ended up destroying Axion Labs as he looked for his chew toy. Anyone who saw Danny Phantom with Cujo thought that he was Phantom's dog, and blamed all the wreckage on him. However, all Phantom was trying to do was STOP Cujo from wrecking everything." Jazz added the last one in hope of a certain ghost hunter (*cough, cough* Valerie Gray *Cough, cough*) realizing the mistake she made. Jazz watched Valerie closely for a reaction. Valerie definitely was showing some signs of disbelieving, but that quickly turned to guilt. Danny Phantom HAD, after all, tried to tell her that… Jazz allowed a small smile to make its way onto her face at the small victory that would hopefully help her brother in the end. Now maybe she'll listen to Danny explain, and maybe even help him fight ghosts! Okay, maybe that second one is rather optimistic, but hey, you can't blame a girl for trying!
"Anyway, Cujo took a liking to Danny. Danny found accidentally found him in the lab after he escaped once again, and Cujo practically chose Danny as his master. That's why Cujo is protecting Danny right now." Jazz finished.
The class (who had all been listening in) looked over to see Cujo standing over Danny while Sam talked to him. She seemed to just finish explaining that the group of people were all friends of Danny's because just then Cujo shrank back down to his puppy form and yapped happily at the watching group.
Maddie now walked forward towards her son, Sam, and Cujo. She bent down next to her son and, as the protective puppy watched her, studied his face.
Danny's face was rather bruised (obviously) and he had a gash along the side of his head were the missile's impact was the worst. His gash on his chest looked no better, but worse. It was much longer and deeper. This would probably be because the missile hit him at an angle, but Maddie had no way of knowing that.
Danny groaned again and shifted his position. Slowly his eyes opened and he sat up on his elbows slightly.
"Ugh… Who hit me with a giant baseball bat?" Danny muttered.
"Skulker," Tucker answered.
"Oh… right…" Danny murmured. "He went after Ember, right? To see if she was alright?"
"We have no idea, Danny," Sam replied.
"What? Why not?" Danny asked.
"You ran way ahead of us, that's why," Maddie answered.
"Oh… " Danny whispered. "Oops."
"I want to know HOW he ran way ahead of us!" Emma asked.
"Yeah, you're failing gym!" Chelsie agreed.
"AND you're clumsy! How did you manage to even stay upright without tripping?"
"I didn't think I seemed THAT clumsy…" Danny whispered.
"Got an answer?" Jessica asked.
"Or are you just going to sit there!" Ashly added.
"Actually, he's technically only half sitting. He's pretty much lying down." Alexa corrected.
"Whatever! It doesn't matter!" Ashly replied.
"If you'd be quiet, I am sure he would answer your questions!" Sam exclaimed.
All eyes then turned to Danny.
"Um… What was the question again?" Danny asked.
"Ugh!" A bunch of people yelled.
"HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO RUN SO FAST!" Matt exclaimed.
"Oh… I can run faster when in danger because my life is at risk?" Danny answered/asked.
The sounds of three hands slapping their faces in annoyance at their friend's failure at telling a lie filled the air.
There was a sudden outbreak of conversation.
All the noise was beginning to hurt Danny's head.
Reading her friend's expression, Sam ordered, "WILL YOU ALL BE QUIET!"
At this, there was silence.
"Thank you," Sam replied to the questioning faces. "Now, I'm sure that you would all like to chat away about how 'they know something' or 'something weird is going on' or whatever, but we have and injured classmate that needs tending to and WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GHOST ZONE! So lets all be quiet!"
After Sam's rambling orders, everyone separated into separate groups to talk amongst themselves. Sam and Maddie worked on wrapping Danny's gashes while the rest of the group talked.
"Thanks, Sam," Danny said gratefully after she and Maddie finished wrapping his wounds and Maddie left to talk to Mr. Lancer and Jack.
"It's no problem. I help you bandage your wounds all the time after ghost fights." Sam replied simply.
"No, not just that." Danny explained. "For getting them to all be quiet. I was getting a seriously bad headache."
Sam laughed at that.
"But, moving on to more serious matters," Danny continued, "I don't think it's smart to stay in one place for this long."
"Danny, we both know that your mom isn't going to let you continue on when you are injured like this."
"I know, but…"
"No, Danny. Stop worrying. We'll probably just stay here for one night. Or whatever you call the span of time in the Ghost Zone when you're sleeping."
"Okay, but I just have this bad feeling…"
"Well, Skulker will probably be busy taking care of Ember, right? So that's two of your normal enemies that won't bother you anymore, right?"
"Yeah, okay, but still…"
"Just let things play out for a little while, alright?"
"Okay, Sam. Thanks."
"No problem," Sam replied as she got up to go rejoin the group. "I'll be back after I figure out what the plan is."
"Okay," Danny answered as she walked away.
Danny glanced warily around the Ghost Zone's green swirling sky. "I still have a bad feeling…"
At that moment, however, Cujo decided it was time to make his presence known to Danny and came in range of his ghost sense. (He had been keeping his distance so that Danny wouldn't freak out when his ghost sense went off.)
Danny tensed as his ghost sense went off. He scanned the surrounding area and barely started to open his mouth to try to warn Sam, Tucker, and Jazz when the small green puppy rammed into him.
"Cujo!" Danny exclaimed happily, relieved that it wasn't a malevolent ghost.
Cujo's response was to lick Danny's face repeatedly until Danny had to push him away in order to wipe away the glowing slobber from his mouth and nose so he could breath.
Danny smiled happily as he lay down with Cujo curled up on his chest. He relaxed and decided that the group would wake him if they needed him or Cujo would alert him to danger as he began to drift off to sleep. They probably were staying the night there anyway, and he was so tired. Sleep seemed like the only thing that he needed at the moment.
Unfortunately, his need for sleep and his happiness that Cujo was around made him forget his feeling of danger. And unfortunately, this forgetfulness made the entire group vulnerable to attack…
