Chapter 4:
Amy's POV:
Ever since Dan and Natalie kissed last week everything has been quiet. Too quiet. Dan hadn't been playing pranks on anyone and Natalie had kept any snide comments to herself. It was surprisingly civil. It unnerved me. Something had to be coming. I suspected that Dan was planning something. I had no idea what but I knew my brother. He was only quiet when he was planning something he knew would get him in serious trouble.
"I told you, we need to get this done fast, Amy is beginning to notice somethings up. Come on. You have to have some ideas." I heard a huff of annoyance. "I told you Daniel, you can't expect me to come up with ingenious ideas in one week." Wait a minute. That was Natalie. Are you telling me that Dan and Natalie are talking to each other?
"What ingenious ideas? You've got nothing. I have had plenty. And my name is DAN. Not Daniel."
"Are you seriously still annoyed by that. I thought we were past that."
"We will be past that when you start calling me Dan."
"Well, 'Dan', your ideas are terrible. They would never work."
"Well, we're running out of time." Time? Time for what. This prank had a time limit. That was concerning.
I walked away from the kitchen, mildly surprised that they were in the very room they had to kiss in. It obviously didn't bother them half as much as they made it out to. I wandered towards the study. It was my favourite place to think, and besides, while I was there I could look for a new book to read.
"Love?" I looked away from the shelf I was scanning, startled. "Oh, hello Ian. You know I don't like it when you call me Love." I turned back towards the bookshelf. I was looking for the sequel to a book that I had just finished. I knew it was in here somewhere. "I know. It doesn't change my mind on calling you that." I huffed. It was so hard to stay annoyed at him when he had that silky accent. Snap out of it Amy. Honestly, you sound like every teenage girl you've ever not wanted to be. His accent is stopping you from being annoyed. That's crazy.
"Well. Your sister and my brother are planning something." That got his attention. "What? You mean my sister and your obnoxious little brother, who have been avoiding everybody, including each other, like the plague, are actually planning something. Together. As in, with each other?" I giggled a little at his confusion. "Yes. Weird isn't it?" He still held a perplexed expression on his face. "But they wouldn't have even done this before the kiss. Why are they doing it now?"
"I think they're coming up with a revenge plot. Which scares me because I would be a victim." Ian frowns, which looked unusual on his usually perfect face. Wait, what? Did I just say his face was perfect? "Don't worry. I'll talk to Natalie. She shouldn't sink down to this level." I rolled my eyes.
"What level? Dan's level? What? Is there something wrong with my brother?"
"I never said that. But even you must admit he is a delinquent."
"What! How dare you? Dan is smart. He has a photographic memory. He aces all of his tests at school. He is not a delinquent."
"Even if he is smart it does not mean he isn't a delinquent. He is a trouble maker. And now he's dragging Natalie into his mess."
"Dragging Natalie? You can't drag her anywhere. If she is doing this it was her own decision. Maybe if she wasn't so set on everything going her way-"
"Don't you talk badly about my sister!"
"Then stop talking badly about my brother!"
"Guys, guys. Clam down." My head whipped over to look at the intruder. It was Dan. "Now, what are you arguing about? Almost everybody in the house is standing outside the door listening in." Ian walked over and pushed the door open. Sure enough there stood the Starlings, the Holts, Jonah, and Natalie. Ian grabbed Natalie by the arm, startling her. "Everyone else. Go."
Surprisingly everyone listened. "Not you." He said when Dan tried to leave the room and follow the crowd. When everyone had left and it was just the four of us Ian went into lecture mode. "What is this I hear of the two of you planning something?" They had obviously discussed what to do if they ever got caught because Dan, for once, kept his mouth shut. "I don't know what you're talking about." If I didn't know any better I would have believed Natalie's lie.
"Then how come I overheard you and Dan talking about how you were running out of time and needed to come up with a plan?" The surprise on Natalie's face confirmed my suspicions. "What were you planning?" She huffed. "Well, obviously we didn't have a plan yet. So there's really nothing we can tell you." I turned away from her and spun to face Dan.
"Dan."
"What?"
"Dan."
"What? What do you want?"
"If you don't tell me I'll confiscate your collection of ninja stars."
"You wouldn't dare."
"Try me. I'm sure I'll find someone who wants them more than you."
"Amy…"
"All you have to do is tell me Dan. And then you can keep your collection. And I won't give it away. But if you don't…"
"Okay, Okay - "
Natalie glared at Dan. "Don't you dare." Dan was looking between Natalie and I. He looked perplexed. "Daniel, I don't see why you won't tell us. Unless you don't want Natalie to be mad at you. Which is understandable. When someone cares about someone - "
Dan's POV:
"No. No, no, no." I cut Ian off. "Don't you start twisting this around." I looked at the ground. This is going incredibly downhill. Just when I start to think Natalie might not be so bad, that the feeling I get when she's around might not be hate, this was thrown in my face. "Stop it. Leave Dan alone." Then Ian turned towards Natalie. "Why do you care? I thought you hated him. You said he was a stupid git with no brain or fashion sense. Have you changed your mind?" She rolled her eyes. "No. He still has no brain and no fashion sense. But he's not a git."
Natalie's POV:
Oh no. Why did I say that? Now they think something's going on. I can see it in their eyes. I avoided looking at Dan. I didn't know how he would take my sudden change of heart. So what if I didn't think he was a git anymore. That didn't mean I liked him.
My eyes betrayed me and looked over at Dan. His expression was so perplexed that I had to fight the urge to laugh at him. "Is there something going on between you two?" I looked back towards Amy. "What would make you think that? Just because I no longer hate his mere existence it doesn't mean I like him. Honestly. Just because you two like each other doesn't mean we do."
The blush that spread over her cheeks proved it. She liked him back. This would put a huge dent in our plans. It would be less revenge, more helping speed this extremely slow process along. "We won't do anything. Not for revenge. Not for 'fun'. You don't need to worry." I said, making an effort to make my voice sound defeated. "Okay." Ian sighed. I could not believe that he fell of it. Were all of those years spent training wasted on him.
