It was mid-November. Gale and I were tangled on my bed, drenched in post-coital bliss when he told me about a party. "Someone from work told me about it. There's booze and some bands, it should be fun. You're going with me." He said. "Of course." I curtly replied.
The band playing on the makeshift stage was mediocre. Their cover of "Because" has a tinge of hard metal somewhere. I really can't ask for more. And apparently Gale's friend brews his own beer, so it wasn't so bad.
I was sitting with Gale and his friend Beetee when I felt someone staring at me. I looked up and sure enough, I was met with clear blue eyes. He was standing in the living room, barely paying attention to the redhead in front of him. "Excuse me for a minute." I told Gale and Beetee. They dismissed me with a wave and continued talking about the newest specs that came out this year.
I made my way towards him, to end this ridiculousness once and for all. "Peeta right?" I said. He nodded. "Do you mind if I borrow him for a minute?" I asked the redhead. She shook her head. I grabbed Peeta's arm and led towards the basement. Beetee turned it to a game room, and was currently empty at the moment. Perfect for my confrontation.
"I don't know how much you know but can you please leave me alone?" I said.
"Excuse me?" He said.
"I know you're not stupid, you know exactly what happened in your house that night. What I did with your brother and Cato is none of your business, so can you please stop staring at me like I'm some kind of harlot?! It was one time thing, and I'm not exactly proud of it!" I exploded.
"Katniss you have to calm do-" He began.
"I'm pretty fucking calm, and how the hell did you know my name? I don't remember telling you." Peeta turned red all of the sudden. His eyes glued on the floor.
"So?" I demanded.
"Kindergarten, we were in the same preschool. I remembered you." Peeta said. "And I'm not staring at you because I think you're...you're that type. I just wanted to talk to you."
I was dumbstruck. Kindergarten? Hell, I can't recall anything from that long ago. I felt stupid. I was the one who dragged Peeta down here and after hearing his explanation, I don't know what to tell him anymore. "You know what, forget it. I'm sorry I dragged you here. Just go back to your date, she might be worried." I hastily made my way up the stairs, ignoring Peeta's plea to wait. I bumped into the Gale the minute I reached the top of the stairs. "There you are, I got thought you got lost." He smirked. "Katniss" I heard behind me. Gale saw Peeta emerge from the basement. He looked at me imploringly. I shook my head. He placed his arms around my waist and guided me back to Beetee.
"So are you going to tell me what that scene was about earlier or am I just going to assume you fucked blondie in the basement?" Gale asked. We were parked outside my house. Gale hasn't asked anything about Peeta, until now. "We had a misunderstanding, it's all cleared out now." I said. "I didn't know you knew the baker's son." Gale continued. "I don't. Let's just drop it okay?" Silence. "Are you going to stay the night?" I asked. Silence. "Gale?" "Not tonight Katniss, I'm tired. I'll see you tomorrow okay?" And with that, I hopped off the truck and watched Gale drive away.
