Chapter 10
Dying in time
Nick walked up stairs slowly, still thinking about what he'd just done with Ellis. Not that he was ashamed just simply enjoying the thought of what they'd done, and how he'd enjoyed it. As he made his way towards the kitchen where it sounded everyone was, he passed the door to the back yard, which he looked outside through the small window in the door. He could still see where the hole was in the fence where the bullet had gone through after leaving his body. It was funny how you could pin point something like that, a life changing moment like being shot always seemed to have that a effect. Like remembering where you had your first kiss, or the first heart break... You remembered where it happened, the exact spot or moment. Nick stared at the spot for a moment before he felt someone behind him. "Pa said he needed your help." It was Phil, who's voice alone caused Nick's blood to run cold.
Nick's eyes narrowed slowly as he kept his eyes focused on outside. "I was heading there." There was a scoff at Nick's reply, "Yeah? Then why aren't yeah in the kitchen?" Nick turned around to face the kid. "Look kid, I'm not stupid." Nick glared at Phil who glared back, "I know what you're up to." Phil smirked his arms crossed. "Yeeeah?" He sneered at Nick before slowly starting to head to the kitchen. "I bet." Nick followed after slowly, how badly he wanted to just strangle the kid right then and there caused him to grit his teeth. That little brat needed to go, and Nick would take him out one way or another.
Once in the kitchen Nick first noticed Ellis and Pa putting together back packs. He walked up to the table slowly watching them, "I thought we were cleaning up the back yard." Pa looked at Nick before shaking his head, "Plans changed when we noticed how low on food we are. Ya'll folks ate most of our stock, least yeah could do is go out and get some." Nick nodded slowly before looking at Ellis. "Who all is going then?"
"Oh well Rochelle Volunteered, and Phil did, so I said you and I could go since you're always good at finding things better then Rochelle was... and you've saved my ass a good couple times out there." Ellis pulled the backpack over his shoulder, making sure it was secure. "Right... So I get to go out with the girl who can barely pull her own weight, a kid, and another kid." Ellis pouted before he shrugged. "At least you get help compared to being alone as the cripple." He stuck his tongue out at Nick who smirked, grabbing one of the other packs off the table. "Ya'll can use the guns you brought with. I aint got none to spare right now. So if you can grab any when out do." Rochelle walked into the kitchen carrying the hunting rifle she'd had when they first got there, as well as the hand gun and ax.
"Think you can handle the ax this time Ellis?" He asked as he took the handgun from Rochelle, popping the ammo chamber out to check and see how many bullets he had left. "Oh ha ha." Ellis rolled his eyes as he took the ax from Rochelle checking to make sure it was still in decent shape. Phil grabbed his bag from the table as his father handed him a hand gun as well. "You watch your back out there Phil, don you let them leave you behind." Pa slapped Phil on the shoulder giving a grin. Phil looked at Pa then looked at Nick a small smirk on his lips, "Yeah I won't fall behind Pa."
Nick glared at the kid before he grabbed one of the packs off the table pulling the bags straps over his shoulders. "You gonna lead us?" Rochelle asked as she pulled her own pack over her shoulders, giving a glace to Nick as she did so. "Don't take that too hard Nick." Ellis muttered hearing her words, "She's just givin you a hard time." Nick grumbled a bitch under his breath before moving past the others and towards the front door.
The three headed out with out saying much to each other after that. Nick lead the way while trying to think of where they hadn't looked before coming to the home and getting too comfortable. There had to be homes or businesses they hadn't checked, they wanted to avoid most of the grocery stores now due to the smells they had. "Isn't there a elementary school close by?" Nick asked softly looking at Ellis who shrugged before looking at Phil. "Is there?" Phil nodded and pointed to the right of the road by the house. "Just up the hill a bit and a left." Nick started heading the direction Phil had pointed out, he would have to trust where Phil said the school was he liked it or not. The cafeteria would have a supply most likely untouched by the hordes. "You know my sis used to go to that school." Phil said as they made their way down the street and towards the elementary school. "She was finally hitting middle school when all this started."
Rochelle put a hand on his shoulder and rubbed it softly. "I'm sorry honey, aint no one your age supposed to witness all this." Phil shrugged off her touch before looking away. "It made me stronger. Pa says I had to grow up fast, and I did." He continued to look off while Rochelle watched him, before looking foreword once more. "Yeah, we all kinda had to grow up fast because of all this."
Ellis scratched his chin before shoving a hand in his pocket. "This kinda reminds me of this one time me and Keith when we was kids." He stopped in his thought however as he watched the road before them. The undead walked slowly this way and that, most of them away from where they were trying to get to, but none the less there were dozens of them. Nick put a hand over Ellis's mouth just in case the kid wanted to try and finish his latest story about his child hood friend. He placed a finger to his own lips as he looked at him, then pointed to the ally way to their left. They moved as quietly as they could to avoid startling the walkers ahead of them. They could hear a growling noise, much like a cat growling before going to pounce on it's pray. "Fuck." Nick muttered before grabbing Ellis's arm and pulling while he started to run.
The growling got louder as the four of them ran down the Ally way, running to the first back door they could find. "Cover me!" Nick grabbed the back pack off his shoulder scrambling to find his knife. Ellis held out the Ax to Nick in case he would need it, while Rochelle and Phil looked around trying to find where the hunter was. Nick found his knife, pulling it out of the cover he had for it he quickly went to the door handle and jiggled it. When the door didn't budge he slammed his body weight against the metal door, causing the handle to start to give way. He continued to slam his body against the door until the door handle couldn't hold up any longer, he pushed his knife in the growing dent of a hole that was where the handle had held into the wall, giving him more leverage to wrench the door open. With one last slam the door gave way and slammed open. Nick held the knife by his side as he grabbed his bag once more and went inside. The three others quickly followed him inside slamming the door shut just as a screech echoed in the ally way, the hunter slamming into the door as it shut. Rochelle and Ellis slammed their bodies against the door to try and keep it closed and not allow the dead predator to get inside.
"Hold the door!" Nick yelled as he ran down the hall way. There had to be a janitor closet close by, and in it he'd be able to find tools to keep the door shut, he just needed time. He turned a corner to see what he feared the most, a hallway full of undead. He skidded to a stop, looking left and right as he tried to find the janitor closet still. He couldn't leave Ellis with Rochelle back there, they wouldn't be able to fight off a hoard of these fuckers and a leaping one. He backed up slowly before opening a door to his left while holding his breath. He breathed easy seeing that he'd picked right upon entering the room. He closed the door behind him as he grabbed his flash light. He just needed something strong enough and long enough to block that damn door before they could handle the other things blocking their path. Moving through the room quietly, attempting not to make any noise that would startle the hoard outside the door, Nick moved to the back of the room. In the back was a crow bar they would be able to wedge between the handles. He grabbed it before giving the room a quick last look, finding nothing else of use.
He made his way quietly out of the room, looking down the hall again seeing the undead still doing nothing. He ran quickly ran back down the hall heading back to the others, holding out the crow bar as he got closer. Rochelle grabbed it from his outstretched hand, and wedged it in the handles of the door. The four of them stepped away from the door panting as they watched the doors move from the hunter trying to claw its way in. "There's more down the hall." Nick said panting, looking at Ellis and then Rochelle. Phil looked scared as the doors were banged on, the noise would attract the other undead down the hall, and they all knew this fact. Nick rolled his shoulders before grabbing the axe from Ellis and handing it to Phil. "Based on your track record you're not getting a fuckin gun kid." Phil started to protest however Rochelle stopped him before he could, "It's alright, I'll be right next to you." She smiled holding up her hand gun.
Ellis reached over to Phil's pack and took the hand gun from inside, while Nick checked the hunting rifle to make sure it was properly loaded. "Let's do this." Nick stated as he loaded the chamber. The cry of the undead echoed in the hallway, then the sound of running zombies. Ellis moved a bit down the hallway so he could make sure he'd get better shots at the range they'd be at. Nick took aim, then pulled the trigger aiming from one of the undead as it made the corner for them. The bullet blasted through the undead's temple, causing it to fall to the ground in a heap. Then the others followed.
Screams filled the hallway as the undead clambered over each other trying to reach the four, before the one in the lead. The sound of gun shots started to drown out the sounds of the dead as quickly Nick and Ellis picked off each undead one by one. They worked as quickly as they could, though the undead kept coming, getting closer to Ellis who was further ahead.
One of the undead noticed how close it was to Ellis, so it began to push others ahead of it, trying to get to the brunet. "ELLIS LOOK OUT!" Rochelle yelled seeing the undead determined to get to him. Nick shot at the ones around himself, and then for the ones going for Ellis. All of them went down except the one determined zombie. It let out a loud roar of a yell, lunging at Ellis who yelled while shooting at it. One of the bullets landed square between the undead's eyes, just as its body fell on top of Ellis, causing both to fall to the ground with a thud.
"ELLIS!" Nick yelled running for the other, shooting the remaining undead in the hallway as he did so. Rochelle moved forward a bit, but stayed close to Phil to protect the kid incase anything else wanted to jump out. Phil looked at the hallway, then behind them at the locked door. Now was his chance to make a move. "Ouch!" He leaned against the wall as if in pain. Rochelle turned around looking at the kid, and moving closer again. "You alright there Phil?" Phil looked up at her and grinned, "I'm perfect."
The whack of the ax plunging into Rochelle's chest was loud and wet. She stood there hands grabbing at her chest in a twitching motion as she struggled to get air into the lungs that were slowly filling with blood. "WHAT THE FUCK!" Nick screamed struggling to push the dead zombie off of Ellis so they could run. "She turned on me." Phil stated causally as he pushed Rochelle with his foot, trying to pull the stuck ax out of her chest, causing her to fall with a thud that echoed through the hall. Phil struggled to try and pull the ax out still, while Nick helped Ellis to his feet. Both men stared at Phil in terror as he finally started to wrenched the ax free. "Just like you two did... Now it's your turn."
