Hmm, I actually only expected the 'carnival' thing to be 1 chapter...but oh well.
To say he was 'scared' would be incorrect. Near wasn't scared to go on it, he was just...nervous about being up so high with only a bar to keep him from failing to his doom. Is that so unreasonable?
Apparently, it was.
"C'mon, there's nothing to be afraid of."
"I never said I was afraid, Mello. I'm fine." He shrugged nonchalantly. He wouldn't have Mello knowing otherwise.
"You're pulling your hair out." Obviously it wasn't often that Near would show himself to be worried , or anything else for that matter. So Mello couldn't hide the slight amusement in his voice.
"..?" Near pulled his hand away from this head to look at it. There were sevral white strands looped around his fingers. He tugged them off.
"I must have been twisting a little to hard, I just wasn't paying attention." He shrugged again, looking away.
The blond sighed. Would it kill him to just admit it?
The five stood in line, which was much longer then expected, waiting for their turn on the ride. And L was also feeling a little 'nervous'.
"Light, are you sure you want to go on this?"
"Of course. Why do you ask?"
"You were feeling unwell earlier and-"
"It's nice for you to be concerned, Ryuuzaki, but I'm fine now."
"Oh. That's..good." He sighed. This was going to be unpleasant.
"I have to go to the bathroom, hold my spot okay?" He patted L on the shoulder before walking away. The detective just nodded.
"Hey guys?" Matt spoke up, "We'll all be ridding together on this Ferris Wheel. Unlike the other, It can seat up to six people."
"Sounds fine to me." Mello nodded.
L thought about this for a moment. Would all of them ridding together be a good or bad thing? He wasn't so sure.
The line moved forward, and so did they. But Near's baggy white pants, being a little to big, caused him to stumble into a girl in front of him.
"Hey!" She whipped around angrily to face whoever dared to bump her. But her facial expression changed dramatically when seeing the white haired boy.
"Oh, kawaaaiii!! Look at him Miya!" She tapped the shoulders of the girl next to her, she also turned around.
"Aw, what a cutie!" Miya bent down and smiled at him. Though he was older, he was shorter then them. Which added to his child-like demeanour.
"What's your name?" The girl he bumped into spoke as if talking to a toddler. Near sweetdroppped.
"Near.."
"Near? That's adorable! I'm Yuki." She held out her hand, eagerly. Near just looked at her with a blank expression, opting to twirl his hair again instead. This gesture sent the girls into a 'Omg that's just too cute' overload, and they had a squealing fit.
The leather-clad blond flinched.
"Could you not do that?"
They looked up and Yuki, being completely oblivious of the other three until now, gave Mello and odd look.
"Oh, are you his older sister or something?"
He crossed his arms. "Or something." It then only took a split second to register what had been said. "Do I sound like a girl to you?! I mean, come on!" He unbuttoned his vest, "Does it look like I have boobs?! Damn it, I'm a guy!"
This small rant was completely ineffective, (Save for Matt being a little flustered at the skin exposure.) And the girls seemed to have blocked him out.. well, pretty much as soon as he started talking.
Scanning the odd group, Miya's eyes landed on the man standing at the side.
"Wait, you must be related to him, you two look just alike!" She walked over to L.
Sighing, he decided to play along. "Yes, Near is my younger brother." Thinking about it a moment, he then realized there was 89 percent chance that the girls where not going to be leaving them alone anytime soon.
Crap.
The line moved again, as did they, and the two girls continued conversing with them. Though it was mostly one-sided.
Funny, the girls weren't even talking to him and Matt was getting stressed out. He pulled out a cigarette and lit it.
"Smoking's dangerous to your health, you know." Yuki scrunched her face up and fanned the smoke away with her hand.
"Yeah, well nagging me could be dangerous to your health." Matt's voice returned to the low and dangerous one he'd used on the guy hitting on Mello before. It was pretty scary.
L then reminded himself that you should have added Matt's random temper to his cauculation.
The girls paled and gave each other uncertain looks before turning around, not planning on bothering them anymore.
Mello laughed.
--
At first, he was sure there had to be something. But after truly thinking about it, there was nothing. That was it.
Not public hand rails, not a bag filled with plain flavored chips, not the outfit of the girl that just walked by, not even a room filled with mice could compare!
He looked mortifying at the 'germ-inator', as he rightfully nicknamed it, in front of him.
No, nothing was more disgusting or vile then a port-a-potty.
And after debating on it for a minute, he decided on just peeing behind something... Too bad there were no trees or bushes around, though.
Great.
Light stalked over to the Fun House. It was big and oddly enough, he noticed, there was hardly anyone around.
Once he finally got to the back of it, he unzipped himself and gave a sigh of relief.
"No, it sounded more like a ghost or something."
He jumped at the sudden voices coming from the side of the small building, where there was a food stand. Boys, probably pre-teen from the sound of their voices. Luckily they couldn't see Light from where he was.
"But I just went in the Fun House, and I didn't hear anything like that."
"Well it was there earlier. Why do you think no one's going in anymore? It was scary!"
The other boy sighed. "Quit being such a baby."
The voices faded, as they continued arguing, walking away.
Light raised an eyebrow. Strange noises? Hm, so that's why it's so abandoned over here.
He then finished up and headed back to the others.
--
They were next to get on now. Finally!
"Where is-"
"Hey, no cutting!" Mello was interrupted by the complaints of the people behind them as Light pushed through the crowd.
"S-sorry it took so long." Light was panting softly, obvious had ran all the way back.
"You're just in time." L tried to hide a smile. He was really starting to worry he would have to ride this..thing without his Light.
Wait..his Light? When did that start?
A small push broke him out of his thought as he was directed towards the Ferris Wheel seats.
"Go on, Ryuuzaki. It's our turn." Light pointed out.
The seating was different then Near had expected. Instead of a square metal place to sit with only a bar to protect you, it was rounded and big. There was even padding, making it quit comfortable. He supposed it was because this was built to hold more people.
He decided he liked these much better then the others.
Near sat in the middle of Matt and Mello, as per usual, while L and Light sat opposite of them. L immediately brought a thumb up to his lips.
"Buckle up!" The carny called to them as they began lifting up. The sweet-toothed 'panda' started searching frantically for the seat belts.. But why would a Ferris Wheel have seat belts?
Oh right, it wouldn't.
The carny laughed below them.
L sulked. Oh yeah, real funny.
Hoisting them up almost to the very top, it seized to let others on.
"Ryuu-cub?" Light looked over, concerned. "Are you okay? You're shaking."
"I, uh..I'm cold."
Near looked over, giving his mentor a sympathetic look. Well, at least he wasn't the only one feeling uncomfortable.
"Oh." Scooting over so they were more then able to share body heat, the brunette tangled L's fingers with this own. "Better?"
L's face flushed. "Y-yes." He really was feeling better.
Light smiled. "Good."
The younger ex Wammy boy's exchanged looks, and found themselves smiling as well. They also realized that they were cold, and shifted closer.
It was quite for a while before Light spoke again.
"Thank you again, Ryuuzaki." He snuggled closer, laying his head on L's chest.
The detective nodded, now at peace with the ride and his decision to come here.
Light sighed contently, allowing his mind to wounder back to his thoughts of the carnival being beautiful at night, and having a romantic feel. He glanced around.
Yeah, It was still true.
The ride was now moving in a very slow and calming rotation.
"You know, I was worried I'd have to ride this without you." L admitted, looking down at Light.
"Oh, sorry about that. I didn't want to use the port a potty for obvious reasons, so I ended up going behind the Fun House."
"I'm surprised no one saw you." He chuckled.
"There was strange noises inside scaring everyone off or something. The place was deserted." Light explained simply.
"That's odd."
"Yeah."
Across from them, three faces changed rabidly to scarlet.
Thus concludes their little carnival outing.
So what'd ya think?
(A/N: Why do I picture Light as being afraid of mice? I have no clue. xD
And that whole thing with them lying about there being seat belts.. that actually happened to me. Damn carnies. lol.)
-I do plan to continue updating, the time just depends on when more ideas come to me. Though I do have a few things in mind...-
