It was mid afternoon by the time Tommy and Lindy reached their destination, Lindy's hometown. Lindy had fallen asleep with her forehead rested against the car window, (it didn't look comfortable) not long after the incident on the side of the highway.
Tommy pulled into the parking lot for a small diner, with a rusted out sign, and killed the engine. He really didn't want to wake her, but from Lindy had told him earlier, she needed to eat.
"Lindy," He shook her shoulder.
"Where are we?" She questioned sleepily as she lifted her head off the glass. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes with the back of her hand, and ran her fingers through her hair, trying to comb out any rats.
"We, are going to get food before we do anything else," He told her, unbuckling his seat belt. "You need it."
"Tommy," Lindy sighed, (for a moment, she had forgot that she was upset with him)
"No," Tommy told her seriously. "You're going to eat Lindy, I know you're worried about Sarah, but you need to take some time to focus on your health."
Lindy sighed, opening the car door and climbing out. She took a minute to stretch her legs, before meeting Tommy up at the front door. She chewed her lip as he held the door open for her.
The diner was familiar to her and for a minute she closed her eyes, gripping the back of one of the booths near the door.
"You okay?" Tommy questioned, placing a hand on her right shoulder.
Lindy shrugged his hand off, "I'm fine," She snapped, letting go of the booth and waiting for the waitress to come and seat them.
"What can I get you two?" The waitress questioned as Tommy and Lindy took their seats. She sat across from him, hoping to avoid his eyes as she ordered her drink. She succeeded.
Tommy picked up one of the menus, watching as Lindy did the same. He couldn't help but worry about her. No matter how much she denied it, he knew she was fragile. He cursed himself for not watching her better when they were on good terms. If Sophia had figured out that she was having problems, why didn't he?
"Happy now?" Lindy questioned as she pushed her plate back on the table, and took one last swig of her soda.
Tommy wanted to smile at the way she crooked her brow at him, but he refrained as he stood up to pay the check.
"I can pay for my own," Lindy protested, reaching into her jacket pocket.
"It's the least I can do," He glanced at the ticket, "Ready?"
She nodded, (she wasn't in the mood to argue with him again).
When they got back in the car, Lindy resumed her former position, eyes open.
As he drove, Tommy fought the urge to ask about Lindy's connection to this place, (to this town) but he made sure he stayed quiet. After all, he didn't deserve an answer from her when he never, (really) answered her.
He followed the GPS Catherine had given him before he'd went over to Lindy's. (He had to hand it to her, even at a little after three in the morning, his boss was still pretty alert with her cases).
He felt Lindy eyes on him, (his fingers tightened over the steering wheel) "What's the plan?" She questioned softly.
"I'm following the GPS Catherine gave me. First, we need to find a place to stay and then we work with the local police. This whole thing is bigger than the NYPD itself. Catherine's already got back up ready in case it's needed,"
He watched her nod of her the corner of his eye. "I know a place," She said, chewing at her lip.
Tommy raised a brow. He assumed it was her own way of slowly opening up to him again. But after all, he did deserve the silent treatment, (hell, he deserved a whole lot more) but silently, he was glad Lindy was attempting to put everything behind her, (for now) to save her sister. After all, that was her main priority from the beginning.
"It's not fancy or anything, but it'll work for a few nights," Lindy added, reaching for her purse in the back seat.
Lindy sat in car for a few moments after Tommy had pulled up to the duplex. She blew out a breath that she hadn't realized she'd been holding. (She hadn't been here in years.)
"Lindy, you okay?" Tommy's voice sounded far away as he spoke, but Lindy quickly nodded.
Lindy opened the car door, watching as Tommy slung her duffle over his shoulder. She followed him up to the house, stepping in front of him before he made it up the front steps. She closed her eyes for a brief moment, picturing herself all those years ago, walking up the same set of stairs. God, it felt like a lifetime ago.
Lindy knocked on the door, letting her hand fall to her side after a couple knocks. She waited, not bothering to glance over her shoulder at Tommy as they did. It look a few moments, but blonde haired women pulled the door open.
"Lindy," She said, immediately pulling the hacker into a hug. "What are you doing here?" She glanced at Tommy over Lindy's shoulder, eying Lindy as she pulled away.
"They found Sarah," Lindy said softly, (the words felt foreign on her lips, even as she spoke them).
"They, as in, the cops?" The blonde raised an eyebrow, obviously already noticed Tommy's badge around his neck.
"The cyber unit can't take all the credit," Tommy stepped up behind Lindy.
Lindy bit her lip, trying not to concentrate on the fact that she could feel Tommy's body heat radiating off of him. Wasn't she upset with him?
"Come in," The blonde urged, stepping back to let Tommy and Lindy through the door.
Lindy watched as Tommy sat her duffle on the armchair in the living room, before setting his own down beside it. "Tommy," spoke Lindy, "this is Amanda."
"Mandy, this is Tommy Calligan,"
"It's nice to meet you," Amanda said, pushing a lock of hair behind her ear, "Lindy's mentioned you a couple times. She said you were a friend of Ben's."
"His partner actually," Tommy nodded, "thanks for letting us stay here."
"It's no trouble, really, Lindy's an old friend, and Sarah, she was like a sister to me too. I guess you could say, any friend of Lindy's is a friend of mine."
Lindy pressed her lips in a line, ouch. A week ago, she would have said she was Tommy's friend, but now? She didn't know what she was to him. She had to push all her feelings down to even stand in the same room with him. She honestly wasn't sure how she had lasted the entire car ride.
Amanda seemed to have noticed the elephant in her room, (Lindy was sure she had) as she looked at Lindy. "Right, I'll just show you to the guest room," She nodded at Tommy, catching Lindy's eyes, "You mind rooming with me?"
"That's fine,"
"Just like high school, right?"
"What's going on with the two of you?" Amanda remarked three hours after Tommy and Lindy settled in.
"Nothing," Lindy decided after a moment of silence. It was time to choose her words carefully. "Absolutely nothing."
"Stop lying. When you first got here, you could cut the tension in the room with a knife. You would barely look him in the eye, something happened,"
Lindy sighed. "Could we just drop the subject, please?" She took a long sip out of her beer bottle, before setting it back on the counter. "I'm not really in the mood to talk about it."
"Fine, for now, but you are going to tell me, one way or another,"
"Whatever,"
"Are you at least going to tell me about Sarah, and what's going on with her case? Or is that to confidential to share, with me?" Amanda quirked, when Lindy stayed silent, she looked down at her beer bottle. "I still say we should have gone out for this. We need some girl time, plus, bar food sounds terrific right about now."
"We can't, or, I can't,"
"Are you hiding?" Amanda laughed.
"Not really hiding, its just that I'm here on business-"
"Business huh?"
"There's just things I can't do right now. I have to focus on getting Sarah back," Lindy blew out a breath. She felt herself becoming nervous again.
"Hey calm down, you don't have to tell me if you don't want too. I can respect that,"
"Thanks," Lindy smiled, picking up her beer. "Cut me off, please, I really don't feel like being hammered." She pushed her drink to Amanda, leaning against the counter.
Tommy walked into the kitchen, his hair wet from a fresh shower, and cell phone in his hand. "I just spoke to Catherine," He caught Lindy's eye, "She's sending the direct location now. Yeager's still at the apartment, he's looking after Sophia in case anything happens," He chewed his lip, "It won't." He added, making sure Lindy didn't get worked up about Sophia's safety, (that was the last thing she needed).
"So when Catherine sends the direct location, where do we go from there?"
"Catherine's sure the building has camera's, think you could hack into their IP address?"
Lindy nodded.
Tommy's phone dinged. "We have a location,"
"You're not going with me," Tommy ranted, pushing his cell phone further down in his pocket. His gaze was fixed on Lindy, her arms were crossed over her chest.
Lindy took a step towards him, ignoring the fact that Amanda was watching from the other room. "You're not stopping me," She grabbed her jacket off the end of the couch.
"You're not coming," Tommy hissed between closed teeth. "I covered it with Catherine. She sent back up a few hours ago, and the local police are cued in with everything. I can't worry about your safety while I'm working on finding this guy and saving your sister."
Lindy's eyes blazed. "Exactly. My sister, and after everything that cyber did to me, that you did to me, all the lies, I'm going," She slung her jacket over her arms.
He gripped her arm before she had the chance to swing her arm through the sleeve. "This isn't up for discussion,"
"You're right, it's not," She yanked her arm out of Tommy's grip. "and it's not your choice to make."
"Do you not remember what happened to you the last time you went on a case? You were almost branded!"
"If I remember correctly, you were supposed to be there, the entire time,"
"I was drugged!" He ran a hand down his face. "Now, you're not making any sense, God, Lindy, can't you just for once in your life make a rational, safe decision?"
"No," She laughed bitterly, sliding her arms through her jacket.
"I'm just protecting you! I'm trying to keep you safe and out of the way! Can't you just let the cops do their job?"
"If the cops had done their job in the first place Sarah would here right now! That was the whole point of this! That was the reason I moved to New York in the first, it was always about Sarah. It was always about Bubonic for you. I was just the piece of the puzzle that got in the middle of everything,"
"Don't you see that if it hadn't happened like it did, we wouldn't even be this close to either cases? You wouldn't know a thing about happened to Sarah. If you would have taken that job, Bubonic still wouldn't have told you about your sister. He was playing you the whole time,"
"And I played right into his hands. I know that, I was stupid. I know that now," Lindy shook her head, pushing past Tommy. "I'll meet you in the car."
Well, I wish this chapter could have been longer, but that's all I have for now.
Thank you for your reviews on the last chapter! You all are so sweet! I would love to hear your opinions on this chapter. The more reviews, the more I'm inspired to post. It kind of sucks when you write a chapter, and only a few people review. :(
I'm apologizing now for any grammar mistakes and I hope everyone's in character.
XOXO,
Megan.
