"Stay in the car," Tommy instructed as he made sure the gun on his side was fully loaded and secured.
Lindy gave him a look, opening her car door.
"Am I going to have to tie you in here?" He shook his head, but climbed out of the car. "I meant what I said back at the house. I can't have you to worry about while I'm trying to catch this guy." He met her eyes.
"I meant what I said too," Lindy crossed her arms, "You don't get to leave me out of this. It's just as important for you as it is for me."
"Don't you think I know that?" Tommy hissed under his breath, walking over to her, "God, I know,"
"You have a funny way of showing it," It was the first time, she'd gotten a good look at him in days.
Tommy placed his hand on her cheek, praying silently that she wouldn't back away, (she didn't). "I can't lose you too," He whispered, running his fingers over her cheekbone.
He hadn't touched her since the night that they'd kissed.
Lindy's face softened. "Tommy,"
"No, just give me a second, okay?"
She nodded under his hand. "Okay,"
It took a few moments, but Tommy finally pulled his hand from her cheek. He rubbed his fingers together, letting them drop to his side. He could still feel the softness of her skin underneath the pads of his fingertips.
"You go in there on one condition," He nodded towards her, "stay behind me the entire time." He chewed the inside of his jaw, feeling the gun on his hip to make sure it was there in case of emergency.
Lindy nodded.
"I'll be right in front of you," He assured her, walking to the edge of the building.
The building was nearly rusted out. The sides, only metal, were peeling on the edges.
As Tommy pried the door open with his hand, he took one quick glance at Lindy before he took a step inside. He needed to make sure she was right behind him, (he had to).
The floor was solid concrete, cracking in the middle. Rusty water stood in puddles under their feet.
Tommy reached for his gun, drawing it, (just incase). Holding his gun outward, he took a long stride forward. He stepped as soft as he could, making sure Lindy did the same.
They couldn't afford to make a sound.
He felt Lindy's hair brush the back of his neck, (he resisted the urge to shiver) her fingers digging into his jacket. "How big is this building?" Her words tickled in his ear.
He read in between the lines. He knew what she really meant. Where do you think she is?
"I'm not sure,"
The silence was unbearable, but then, footsteps.
"Stay behind me," Tommy hissed, lips closed.
As the footsteps grew closer, Tommy held his breath. His pointer finger rested just outside the trigger on his gun. He resisted the urge to look over his shoulder and look at Lindy. Though, he felt her fingers on his shoulders, he knew she was there, he felt the need to make sure.
"It's okay," He whispered, although, he didn't know whether she was actually scared or not. She had always had a way of not showing fear.
It only took a second, he felt her hands tear away from his shoulders. A small yelp exited her mouth.
Tommy spun on his heel, watching a slender man took Lindy in his arms. (At least, Tommy assumed that it was a man). "Lindy!" Tommy called, aiming his gun for the man's head.
The man took out a pocket knife, pressing it up against her throat.
Just like Ben. Tommy thought, his finger hovering over the trigger.
"I wouldn't shoot if I were you," The man spoke, pressing the blade further into Lindy's skin.
It was a threat, a liability. Lindy was the liability.
Tommy slowly lowered his gun, removing his finger from the trigger.
"Good," The man said, sounding impressed, "Now lay your gun down, just so I can make sure you won't try anything. Although, with Lindy's life in my hands, I assume you won't."
Tommy did as he was told.
"Good," The man repeated, bringing the knife from Lindy's throat. Although, Tommy could still see where it had been.
It scared the hell out of him. To think of anything happening to her, (again) under his watch... He didn't think he could take that. After all, it was his job to protect her now. Then again, he guessed even when Ben was alive, it was his job to protect Lindy.
His eyes glanced to his gun, but he didn't dare move towards it.
The masked man shifted Lindy in his arms, his hand clasping underneath her arm as if he was preparing to sweep her away somewhere, anywhere.
Tommy surveyed the situation in front of him, (the mess in front of him) his feet itched to move towards her, Lindy. But, he was scared. He feared for his life, but more importantly, he feared for hers. It wasn't everyday that a girl like Lindy Sampson walked into his life.
He guessed he had Ben to thank for that. Ben, he had made a promise to him, (even to himself) that he would protect the girl with all he had, even if it didn't go as planned, (it didn't).
He watched Lindy's eyes light up with fear, (tears even) as they met his own orbs. He hadn't seen her upset, scared, since that night. God, that night brought up so many different emotions inside of him. Yes, it was the night that they had kissed, (again, it was for a job) but it was also the night that she'd been put in danger. Lindy had almost been branded, and if it hadn't been for him, Lord only knows what would have happened.
It terrified him just to think those thoughts.
He knew he couldn't let her down. Not now. Now when she'd put her faith in him (once more) to keep her safe. Although, he was never really sure that she'd stopped, not fully.
"You don't get to touch her!" Tommy hissed, watching as the masked man's grip on Lindy tightened. He took off, lifting his feet from the ground and ramming into the man's side. It did little though, the man stood his ground, reaching for Lindy again. His grip on her was so tight, that Tommy was sure he saw bruises peeking out from under the man's fist.
Tommy went for a punch, his fist balled, strength behind the throw. It met the man's cheek with a pop!
It was Lindy's chance to run, pulling her arm from the hand. She ran.
Tommy watched as she got away, a small flutter ignited in his stomach. His only focus now was keeping the kidnapper occupied so Lindy could actually get someplace.
The man seemed to notice Lindy's absence after a few moments, his focus was no longer on Tommy. He pulled out his pocket knife, aiming the blade for Tommy's stomach.
Tommy noticed the blade, even so, he went in for another hit. That time, his hand connected with the man's side. The man, he was quicker, his hand took and plunged the knife into Tommy's side.
Tommy grunted, feeling pain shoot through his body. He tumbled over, his hand reaching for the knife.
There was blood, a lot of it.
That was the last thing he remembered before he blacked out. His only real thoughts were focused on saving the girl.
Lindy stopped, grasping her stomach as she attempted to calm herself down. She was sure Tommy had managed to distract the kidnapper. She peeked, with her eyes, around the corner of a rusted out pipe.
Nothing. It was a good sign.
She shut her eyes, focusing, listening, for footsteps. Nothing.
"Don't think you can get away from me that easy, Lindy,"
A hand clamped over her mouth before she had the chance to even let out a scream.
