"Fionna!" Cake called to her sister, hand over the microphone. "Fire Boy is on the phone!"
Fionna's heart fluttered upon hearing her best friend's words. It had been several days since she'd left the Fire Kingdom, and this was the first time he'd contacted her since their promise. She couldn't contain her excitement, her lips pulling into a large grin as she launched herself off of the couch and flew to the kitchen where Cake stood, holding the phone out to her. The cat watched; one eyebrow raised as the blonde took the phone, smiling into the receiver.
"You know…" She began in a chastising manner, curling her face into the phone. "You were supposed to call me every day." She heard the rumble of her boyfriend's chuckle over the phone. The light, airy feeling in her chest grew, and butterflies flew about in her stomach. Hearing his voice over the phone gave her the kind of warm feeling that made her grin nonstop.
"Ohhhh… I know. I'm sorry. My mom really cracked down on me after you left. She noticed that I hadn't really gotten much done and went a bit nuclear. I was only able to slip away a few minutes ago. It's actually been…pretty boring." The Prince sighed.
"Aww, c'mon! Soon enough, you'll be King, right? It'll all be worth it really soon. I know it." The adventuress assured him, allowing the smooth calmness of his baritone voice wash over her.
"So much paperwork and reading—ugh." He grumbled. The Prince wasn't much for complaining, but Fionna could tell that the stress was getting to him.
"Bet you wish I was still there," Fionna said childishly, attempting to lighten the mood.
"Of course. I'm thinking you should move in permanently." To that, Fionna giggled.
"Oh really?" She asked. "And where exactly would I sleep?"
"With me." He said swiftly, earning a scandalized gasp from his girlfriend.
"That so!?" She laughed openly.
"You'd never be lonely." He murmured quietly.
"You know, until I met you, I don't think I'd ever be this lonely." She uttered, clutching the phone tightly. Him teasing her like this made her want to see him even more.
Flame Prince studied the ceiling of the palace. Oh… why did she have to be so…? He loved the way she talked to him when it was only the two of them. It was so much softer. Hearing her voice after so many days apart never failed to brighten his mood. She was his motivation for working so hard these past several days. Not only so he could see her, but so he could become King, and be someone who made her proud. Glob… He really wanted to see her.
"Mmm. Don't let that cat hear you." He said quietly, a certain warmth to his voice. Instinctively, Fionna glanced up, her eyes falling on Cake, who was trying to stifle a fit of giggles. Though she disapproved, seeing Fionna act so mushy was just too good. The bashful adventuress's eyes grew wide and she blushed profusely. Although, Fionna had to admit that she liked to see Cake take their interaction lightly for a change.
"Glob! Can't a girl get a little privacy around here?! Jeez!" Fionna huffed angrily and indignantly stalked into the bathroom with the phone in her hand, locking the door. She climbed into the bathtub uncomfortably and drew the curtain closed, muttering every insult she could think of and sending them to Cake mentally. She let out one last puff of air, listening to the soft chuckling from Flame Prince over the phone.
"Well. I'm guessing we're alone now?" The prince asked.
"Uhh.. more or less. Sorry."
"Heh. Don't be. It was pretty amusing. You must've been embarrassed." Fionna pursed her lips and said nothing. "Don't pout Fi. I miss you." He added softly, smiling at the mere grunt she offered in response. "So... you were lonely, huh?"
"Yeah, and?" the blonde grumbled stubbornly, looking down at her still blue-tinged skin. "Hey, I've still got this flame-shield on. When does this thing wear off anyway?"
"Hmm.. That's odd. Usually, It'd wear off within 72 hours of the incantation. I don't know actually. I'll ask Flambia about it tomorrow."
"Mm. So… When do you have a break again?"
"Two Days.." Fionna sighed, resting her head on the cool porcelain of the bathtub.
"Booooo." She said, her lips pulling again into a frown. She then heard her prince speaking with someone about the Queen. The girl's frown deepened as she thought of having to say goodbye so soon.
"Hello?"
"Yeah." She answered sadly.
"Um. My mom just went to bed. I guess that means we're done for the day. I can stay on with you."
"You're not too tired? I mean, you can go to sleep, you don't have to—"
"Hey. I don't know if I'll get another chance like this in the next two days. I'm fine. I missed you, and I want to talk to you. I'm not so tired that I can't make time for my princess."
"Alright, Alright!" Fionna giggled, face reddening.
The two talked while Flame Prince got ready to retire for the evening, filling each other in on what they had missed in their days apart. Their conversations branched out into other subjects, and they went on random tangents often. Flame Prince lay in his large bed alone, feeling now just how lonely he was. As the hours drew on, the two became increasingly tired.
"I think I'm falling asleep," said the groggy prince.
"Before you do… I really did miss you. It feels really stupid… We were only apart for three days, but I did. I do." In his exhausted stupor, the prince smiled warmly. He was so tired that he allowed himself to say whatever came to mind without penalty. He hardly cared that she would get flustered and likely chew him out tomorrow. He just wanted to hear her embarrassed voice.
"My sweet princess…"He cooed sleepily. "I've gone mad everyday thinking of you. I miss you... I want to touch you. I can't tell you how many times your face has come to mind. A part of me is missing…"
Stop that. Don't make me feel like this in my own house. Fionna covered her hot face with her left hand, despite the fact that no one could see her. Her heart was thumping so hard in her chest she almost reached down to stop it from exploding from her ribcage. The cool porcelain of the tube was quite the contrast from her too-warm skin. I should yell at him. Why can't I speak? Oh Globbit. Why did he have to be so…so…! At times like this, he's always so… diplomatic. So mature. So... Honest. And I'm just… Me. The sound of his soft breathing… The echo from the tub makes it sound like he's here. I'm getting chills. I want to see you.
"Flame.." She combed her brain for something to say, but she found nothing. She was speechless.
"Come see me soon." His tired voice is so dang adorable. What— even now?! I… I can't help myself.
"Yes."
I'll look…Forward…To…" His voice died away and was replaced with steady breathing that reverberated throughout the bathtub. He'd fallen asleep.
"Me too." It's hopeless. I just can't help myself anymore.
I'm taken with you.
