Chapter 3

When she walked through the door of the Hermes cabin, Alyssa felt a twinge of guilt. She hadn't thought of her mother once throughout the hectic ordeal. She wondered if she could call her mum, just to say that she was alright, but there was also a curiosity there, perhaps her mum knew who father and godly parent was.

Alyssa looked around the cabin. At first glance, it was chaos. Clothes were strewn all over the floor, strange gadgets lying around, presumably broken and a finally, a girl no older than her.

"Alyssa, right? Our newest recruit!" she said.

"Yeah, I'm Alyssa. What about you? Are you an unclaimed kid?"

"Oh no, I'm the cabin leader, Faye. I'm a child of Hermes, and it's my responsibility to look after the new kids like you."

Alyssa was burning to ask this girl Faye the many questions buzzing around her head, but first she needed to know one thing.

"So Faye, ummm…, when will I get claimed?" she asked.

"Oh, sometime this week, hopefully. Gods are much better at claiming their kids after Percy Jackson talked to them."

"Who's Percy Jackson?"

"Oh, just the most legendary half-blood ever! He was a son of Poseidon you know. He was super powerful and fulfilled, like, loads of prophecies and fought loads of powerful monsters and even some gods I think, but I forget which one that is. He even turned down immortality!"

Alyssa tried her hardest to look interested, but was thinking about the only food she had had all day, gum.

Noticing this, Faye said:

"Hey, come down to the mess hall with me. We'll eat dinner, then play a game, not entirely sure what it is tonight. Then we'll have campfire. It's the best part of the night. You might even get claimed!"

Alyssa wasn't too keen on the games, but the thought of getting claimed excited her. She desperately wanted to know who her father was. (She figured it was her father since she was pretty sure she had a human mother.). She followed Faye out of the cabin and walked towards the mess hall. She talked to Faye, about school, parents and England.

When they approached the mess hall, an amazing smell hit them and Alyssa's stomach growled. A large fire was burning in the midst of many tables. To Alyssa's horror, campers were scraping bits of food into the fire.

"What are they doing?" she whispered to Faye.

"They offer part of their food to the gods." Alyssa nodded in understanding. Then she spotted Cameron, he waved back and made to go sit with him. Faye grabbed her hand, stopping her.

"You have to sit on your cabins table. So unless you are a daughter of Hephaestus, you sit with us, and then with the rest of your parents cabin." Alyssa looked around. She noticed some of the tables were empty.

"How come some of the tables are empty?" she asked Faye once they had sat down.

"They are the tables for gods who don't currently have any kids." Alyssa hoped she wouldn't be sitting on one of those tables.

After dinner Chiron gathered the campers around him. Alyssa noticed that there wasn't many kids there, but she soon realized that most went to school.

"Today," Chiron announced, "We will be on the climbing wall. Our new girl Alyssa," at this she turned beet red, "will not be joining in tonight but I expect you to make her feel welcome and put on a good show. Now come along."

The campers cheered and ran to a huge round climbing wall. It looked easy enough, until Chiron 'turned it on'. The wall erupted into flame and lethal spinning weapons poked out if the wall. Alyssa gulped, because though she was glad she didn't have to partake in the activity tonight, she would almost certainly be doing it in the near future. She watched as some easily scaled the wall, and winced when people fell. One boy's t-shirt caught fire and got a couple burns. Chiron poured some golden liquid onto it and he sat down next to her to let it heal.

"You alright?" she asked.

He shrugged, "I've had worse. My name's Jamie by the way. I'm a child of Demeter."

"Nice to meet you. I think you already know my name though…" she laughed nervously and looked at him. He was probably about 13, no older than she was.

They talked until the campers had finished. About the daily schedule of camp, Pegasus riding (she was excited about that), and fighting. She gasped as he recounted stories of minotaurs and other horrible things, all out to kill half-bloods like them.

Soon enough, it was time for campfire. She sat next to Faye and a girl from the Athena cabin called Alice. She listened as stories that until today she thought were myths were told by Chiron. She laughed with Faye as a satyr (she had learnt what the boys with goats' legs were) spilt hot chocolate on himself, and ate delicious gooey s'mores. She lost track of time until there was a bright light. She looked up, expecting to see flood lights coming on or something. But everyone's eyes were fixed above her head. Slowly, she turned her head upwards, fearing. Emblazoned above her head was a large, white lightning bolt. Then she was terrified. She didn't understand what it meant. She looked around until she found a familiar face, Camerons. He was just staring at her, mouth open. At last the silence was broken.

"It appears. It appears that our new girl is a daughter of Zeus."

It was Chiron. She started at him. Surely not her. She wasn't special at all. She was still in shock as Chiron led her away to a large cabin. There was no one there. She was the only current child of Zeus. She sat down and sobbed. There wasn't Faye, there wasn't anyone for her to confide in. She desperately wanted to go back to the cosy Hermes cabin.

There was a knock on the cabin door. She wiped her eyes and said:

"You can come in."

Cameron slipped through the door.

"I'm not meant to be here, but I just wanted to make sure you're okay."

She smiled unconvincingly. "I'm okay, I guess. It's just a shock."

"I think everyone was shocked. You'll be fine. If you need anything, just tell me."

"Thanks Cameron." She smiled as he left, Even though he had pushed her out of a plane, he was beginning to grow on her.
