In the Time Before Time... there were three brother spirits. Mata Nui the Eldest, Mikhu Nui the Middle Brother, and Maka Nui the Youngest.
Back then, we, The Matoran, were a wrathful and untrustworthy people. Not a day passed without blood being spilled. So the brothers descended from the heavens to help us leave this cycle of violence.
Mikhu Nui gave us the Virtue of Unity, and the will to trust each other.
Maka Nui gave us the Virtue of Duty, and the art of crafting Kanohi, Masks of Power.
Then Mata Nui gave us the Virtue of Destiny, and all the values we still treasure today.
In gratitude for what these brothers had done, we named our home in Mata Nui's honor. As well as Maka and Mikhu's names for two of the first six Turaga. For the first time in the island's history, there was an era of peace. But it will not last for long.
As time passed, the younger brothers slowly began to be forgotten by us. For we had taken their gifts for granted and only seek for Mata Nui's guidance. Soon they came up with a plan to get back at their older brother.
With a piece of their hated brother's shadow, a stash of back ore, and the light of a full moon. The two forged the Kraahkan, the Mask of Shadows. But when Maka Nui tried on the mask, it didn't work quite as planned. For the mask not just allows one to control shadows but corrupts those who wear it as well.
Maka Nui, now calling himself Makuta, went on a rampage. Driven mad by the mask's powers, he murdered Mata Nui, devoured Mihku Nui, and sent the island into chaos. Plagues spread, crops withered, Rahi attacked, and storms ravaged the land. But even in times of despair... there is still hope.
For before Mata Nui took his last breath, he told the Turaga that he had sired six children. Three brothers of the land and three sisters of the sky. Each a mighty warrior blessed with the power to control the elements.
In a thousand years, they will arrive on the island, defeat his insane brother, and bring their father back to life. So he can restore their home to the paradise it once was.
Now The Great Spirit rests in his tomb deep beneath Kini Nui, waiting for his children to fulfill their destiny.
