"Wes. Wes, wake up. We're gonna be late." May said as she shook him awake.
"I'm up." He said groggily as he stumbled to his feet. May rushed around him and headed into the shower as he unpacked his suit.
"Hey, can you do me a favor and pack my costume into the bag under my bed?" May said from the shower. "After last night I definitely need to keep my guard up."
"No arguments there. By the way, do you know where the wedding is being held?" Wes asked as he began the requested task. "I just remembered you never really got any directions."
"Get the invitation out of my bag." May said as Wes complied. "There's a black light in there two. Hold the paper up and shine the light on it."
Wes went ahead and flashed the light on the paper as hidden text, revealing very careful instructions, appeared. "Wow, look at that!" The young man said in amazement.
"I know, right? He spared no expense in keeping this a rather private affair. That's why we need to head out as soon as possible. There's someone waiting to pick us up at that location. With the high profile people that will be there I'm sure they want everyone to be on time for security reasons."
"We'd better not keep them waiting then." Once the two had gotten themselves ready they headed out in their regular clothes, their formal wear packed in a single bag over Wes' shoulder. Having made it to the designated location, a dingy dark alley, they both don the black masks and wait for their pickup. "Didn't they say to be here promptly?"
"Yeah I don't know what could be keeping them." May said as she checked her watch. A few moments later the two heard a slight creaking sound a short distance away.
"Here." A voice says as they turn to see the ground open up behind them, a path leading beneath the street, where a suited man awaits them, joined by a second shorter man that May immediately recognizes.
"Chesbro! It's good to see you again." She said happily as the man, an electronic device in his hand, greets her.
"Likewise," He said as he holds the device toward the two. "You'll have to excuse the scan. I trust you but it's a necessary precaution after the past few days you understand."
"I understand completely. No point in taking risks."
"Exactly," He stopped as his scanners pick up her web shooters and gear. He looks up for a moment then back to his screen. "You're all cleared. Right this way please." The passage way closed behind them as they headed beneath the surface. After a short distance the group made to intersecting hallways. "Take a turn this way Miss and you Sir will take this path. There is a single room for you to get changed. When you're ready, meet back here." The two complied and made their way to the appointed rooms.
"Is that who I think it is, Mr. Chesbro?" The guard asked.
"Indeed."
"Why did you let her through with those devices. I thought we kept all weapons out of the proceedings?"
"I've seen her in action son. If there is any kind of emergency, Black Tarantula will be happy to have her help."
Meanwhile
In another of the secret tunnels leading to the LaMuerto wedding the group consisting of the Gambonos, Sniper, Boomerang and Shocker were well on their way. "So where are the others?" Maria asked impatiently as the group walked down the long path.
"Cobra's clearing out the tunnel guard so we don't run into any unexpected problems." Sniper explained. "He said he'd set himself up in a prime spot while we take our positions."
"And the others?" Boomerang questioned, noting the missing Bruiser and Kirigi.
"They're taking their own route in with our friends. Until I can confirm we have a clear shot and the Black Tarantula."
"Pity, would have rather had a brawler like those two opening this little shindig." Boomerang lamented.
"Just remember, Spider-girl is their too so we need to watch out for her." Maria adds. "No telling who else LaMuerto has in his pocket."
"Yeah, no telling." Boomerang said quietly.
"Speaking of Spider-girl," Luigi commented causing Maria to freeze up at the idea that he knew about her little escapade the night before. "The folks back at the big top sent a little something for you." He handed over the duffle bag on his shoulder to the girl as she opened it.
"Ow my gosh!" She said as she began scrolling throw the items. "Ringers constricting rings, the Death Throws exploding pins, even Fifi's bow and trick arrows?"
"The family thought you might get some use of them in this mission. There's a bunch of stuff in their from just about everybody."
"Even Greta the bearded lady?" She asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Don't ask."
"Not to ruin this heartfelt moment but we really should press on." Sniper interrupted as the two caught up with the others.
As the group continued on Kirigi and Bruiser walked down their respective path, having made quick work of the so called defenses in the tunnel. "Coast is clear." Bruiser commented as they were joined by at least twenty masked men, all wearing full military gear and ready for combat.
"Good work gentlemen," A woman, dressed similarly, congratulated the two. "Now we need to get moving. The event will be taking place shortly and we need everyone in position."
Meanwhile May and Wes had joined the many other disguised guests as the ceremony was soon underway. Everyone watched silently as LaMeurto and Arana said their vows and things seemed to be going off without a hitch. Wes noted that May was a bit fidgety in her seat, as if things were about to take an unexpected nosedive. "You alright?"
"I know security is tight but it's not going to be enough." Her eyes focused on one of the four large ceramic vases in front of the stage. "Something just isn't right."
"I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride."
May's spider-sense seemed to kick into overdrive. "Oh no." She shifted toward the stage and slipped one of her web-shooters on out of her purse and held it toward the newly weds. The guards had their weapons trained on her in a heartbeat but were stopped by Chesbro. Her web was already in mid-flight as it attached itself to Black Tarantula and yanked him away just as a sniper's bullet hit the wall behind where his head had been moments before.
Chesbro immediately got the guards organized as the guests scrambled for cover.
"Darn it!" Sniper, seated in a distant tree, lowered his weapon, frustrated by his missed shot. "The wall crawler ruined my shot. Piet, go go go!"
Getting the call, King Cobra leaped out of one of the large vases to attack only to find himself thwarted as May kicked him back inside. "Time to put the cobra back in the basket." She webbed up the top of the vase then wrapped the sides up as well to prevent him from bursting out. "Black Tarantula, you and Arana need to go. I know you've got a safe room somewhere. Get to it."
"I will not abandon my men or my guests to this danger. They threaten my home."
"Not to mention ruining my special day." Arana added. The group stopped as they heard multiple gunfights out in the jungle. "What is that?"
"You need to go. They are looking for you two. The harder you are to find, the easier it will be to take them out."
"Spider-girl is right boss. Let us handle things." Chesbro agreed with the heroine.
Black Tarantula eventually conceded to the facts and he and Arana fled into the mansion. "I need to change into something more comfortable."
Chesbro nodded. "We will hold the line until you return." He watched as she swung off.
Wes ran up to him. "Any thing I can do to help?" The two turned as several armed men in tactical armor emerged from the jungle with Bruiser and Shocker leading the way. The latter blasted several of the guards away with his gauntlets as Bruiser bowled through anyone or anything that stood in his way
"Only if you got a tank, kid." Chesbro said as the tactical troopers aimed their weapons at them.
"On the ground, now!" They ordered as the two reluctantly put up their hands. They were relieved as the troopers were pulled back into the jungle and disappeared in the thick underbrush. Spider-girl emerged moments later and landed down between Wes and Chesbro as the two villains took notice.
"Ah nuts!" Shocker said as he reeled back for a moment in fear.
Spider-girl addressed Chesbro. "Go make sure your people are alright. I've got these two." She watched as he moved off to reorganize the defense of the estate.
"That was a quick change." Wes said.
"What can I say? Now hurry and get somewhere safe. I'll handle these..." She was cut off as Shocker blasted her off the ground and through one of the mansion windows.
"Let's go." Bruiser said as the two charged inside.
Wes hid as he noted two troopers running passed. "Commander said we keep pressing forward. She and her mercs will keep Spider-girl pinned down in the jungle while we get the Tarantula."
"What the heck?" Was all he could say in utter confusion as he was fairly certain he'd just witnessed his girlfriend get blasted in the opposite direction.
Inside Black Tarantula had made quick work of two of the troopers as he and Arana had almost made it to the safe room. "Quickly. We are almost there." The two stopped as a couch was tossed at them that cut off their way forward as Bruiser stood in the doorway and charged forward. Black Tarantula shoved his bride out of the way of the charging brute as he took the brunt of the attack. He attempted to flip Bruiser but found he did not budge in the slightest and the maneuver only resulted in LaMuerto found himself slammed against the ground.
"Not as tough as we were lead to believe." Bruiser said as he tossed Black Tarantula into the air for Shocker to blast.
"Fabian!" Arana rushed to his aid only for an explosive to go off in front of her that released a cloud of gas that choked her and rendered her unconscious. Kirigi hopped down from his ceiling hiding spot and drew his sword to finish the woman off. A moment later his sword his pulled from his hands by Spider-Girl, who hung from the ceiling.
"Careful, kid. You'll poke your eye out." She joked as the silent assassin wasted no time and quickly pulled out a rope and swiftly swung it up at her as it wrapped around her arms. One good yank and she was down on their level. "Wow, you're strong." She pulled against the ropes, surprised that the ninja was able to play super human tug-of-war. He said nothing as she turned her head slightly to see that Shocker had her in his sights and fired blasts from both his gauntlets that knocked her through a wall as Kirigi released his end of the ropes.
"Nice." Shocker said as the ninja retrieved his sword and the two were about to aid Bruiser in finishing Black Tarantula. As they turned away, webs flew from the newly created hole and attached themselves to Shockers legs, dragging him back inside. Several blasts from the villain's gauntlets burst through the walls until they promptly stopped. Spider-girl emerged alone, her costume no worse for ware from the attacks.
Bruiser, who held LaMuerto by the front of his tuxedo, was just distracted from her long enough for his victim to temporarily debilitate him with his eye beams. The mercenary clutched his eyes with both hands as Black Tarantula dropped to the ground and rushed the distracted Kirigi. The ninja attempted to take his head off with his sword but the LaMuerto maneuvered just out of range and quickly closed the distance, grabbing him by the wrist and with one swift move impaled him with his own sword. He watched as Kirigi's limp body fell face first into the floor.
Spider-girl swung back around and kicked Bruiser across the face as he attempted to ambush LaMuerto from behind. Her attack did little as he didn't even budge from his position. "Ow! My foot! Jeez, what are you made of, bricks?"
He said nothing as he attempted to smash her with his right hand. She leaped out of the way and webbed his hand to the ground only for him to rip up the ground freeing his hand. "Oh boy." He charged at her and LaMuerto and the two evaded his heavy handed blows several times before he got a hold of Black Tarantula's leg and smashed him against the ground. The blow rendered him unconscious as he lifted him up to continue his assault. "Let. Him. Go!" Spider-girl shouted as she delivered an uppercut with all her might on Bruisers face, which caused him to drop his prey and surprisingly stagger backwards.
Bruiser put a hand to his face and sees blood in his palm. Two large gashes had formed above and below his left eye. He roared in a rage and charged the girl, who stood her ground and waited til the last second before shifting to her left and threw a hard left punch to his right side. He found himself off balance and looked down to see a puncture wound on the sight of the blow. The mercenary swung his right arm around only for her to slip to his left and deliver a similar wound. She quickly shifted between his legs and behind him before moving her right hand in a karate style blow across the backs of his knees, opening huge gashes across them as he fell forward.
"And just to make sure you don't pull a Rocky on me, I'll make sure you stay down." She webbed him down as she turned to see that Kirigi had vanished, sword and all. "Creepy."
Spider-girl took notice as Black Tarantula approached her. "I thank you for your assistance, Spider-girl."
"Don't mention it. Just go and be with your new blushing bride. We aren't exactly out of the woods yet." She fired a web out of the window and swung off into the jungle. "And make sure to save me a slice of cake." She shouted as she left.
Meanwhile, Shocker had just barely regained consciousness and sat up, bettered and bruised. "Should have never come out of retirement."
Wes saw May swinging off into the jungle and switched on his earpiece. "May, are you alright?"
"Not the best...ooof...time, Wes. Kind of...ow...in the middle of something really important. Let me call you back."
Meanwhile
May had just taken out the deadly sniper that had tried to put her down as she had taken down several of the gun wielding attackers that had crashed the wedding in between then and now. "Now that your dealt with..." She was sideswiped from two sides by blurs that whizzed through the trees. "What the?"
"Hey, girl." Maria Gombono said as she swung from a cable and landed on a branch as her uncle landed parallel to her. "Ready to end this?"
"Nothing would give me greater pleasure." Spider-girl swung from the branch toward Maria as the two Gambono's swung down as well and the three engaged in a spectacular aerial show.
"Try this on for size." Maria tossed a bronze ring at her that landed over top the heroine and constricted her, locking her arms to her sides. She quickly fell from the fight toward the jungle floor. Only a hasty web line to a branch slowed her enough to keep her from crashing hard to the hard ground. It was still painful as she still hit hard. She managed to scramble to her feet only to be greeted by what looked like a bowling pin that flew over her shoulder before exploding and knocking her forward.
"Wow. These are fun." Maria juggled several more before tossing the others at her that had similar results as May made use of her agility to evade the explosives. "Run run run, as fast as you can. It won't do you any good."
May realized it would take strength to get that ring off. She could do it but it would take time and that was something she couldn't do while the projectiles were coming her way. "Got one shot at this." She stopped in her tracks as another pin came flying. Spider-girl leaped up and kicked the device right back to it's source.
Luigi saw his niece freeze up as she saw her own weapon flying back at her. "Move!" When she didn't respond he threw himself in the way and tossed her aside as the pin hit the tree below them. The explosion destroyed the trunk as the entire tree came tumbling down. After the dust had cleared, Luigi had been knocked unconscious from the blast and subsequent fall. Spider-girl dusted herself off, or rather she would have had the constraining ring not still been wrapped around her. All of a sudden she was hit from the side by Maria who unloaded a series of heavy punches and kicks against her.
"You'll pay for that bug girl. No one to save you this time." Maria did several flips as Spider-girl moved away, attempting the entire time to break the trick ring that kept her from counter attacking. The acrobat stopped and gave some hand gestures and magically pulled a sword with an energy blade out of her sleeve and swung it at her.
May turned her body slightly as the blade connected to the side of the ring, slicing it through. "Good thing I don't need help." Now freed, she charged forward, avoiding the blade and going on the offensive. A flurry of fast shots knocked out the younger Gambono as she fell backwards. "You know, if you want to be my rival, you'll need to do a better job." Immediately, her spider-sense triggered and she spun around to see a gun held up to her as one of the black-ops members pointed it at her.
"I think it's time to call it a day, May."
Spider-girl froze as the now confirmed female trooper removed her mask. "Aunt Teresa? What is this?"
Teresa kept her gun trained on her but her face softened. "What are you doing out here? Does your mother know where you are?"
May chuckled nervously. "You won't tell her, right? Wait, don't change the subject. What's going on here?"
Teresa sighed before answering. "My agency is working with the Dalvadian government to kill the Black Tarantula."
"Why?" As she said this the red and blue Tarantula leaped down.
"La Muerta is a known criminal in the states and my government wants him gone. He and his associates are a destabilizing element here."
"As long as he's alive, the Delvadians think he's a threat." Teresa finished. "Now I'm only going to ask you once. Leave this alone and go home."
"You can't do this. The Black Tarantula isn't trying to hurt anyone. He just came here to live his life. His criminal empire is in New York and it's not even his anymore. If that's the case then you're trying to kill a man who's only crime against the Delvadians is that he could do something. I guess that's just how people like you operate, auntie."
"Don't try to turn this back on me, young lady. I gave you a warning now..." A shot rang out as May leaped to the side and a shot struck the ground where she just stood. In a tree a distance away was Sniper, who was lining up another shot. Teresa got on her headset. "Hold your fire! I repeat, hold your fire!"
Sniper didn't respond and instead let off another shot that grazed May's left leg as she swung off and Tarantula gave pursuit. "Run all you want little bug. I can track you wherever you go." He reloaded and used his psionic sight to spot her in the trees. And lined up his shot for when she'd come into his scope. "Got you." He eased his finger on the trigger and squeezed out the shot just as she came into view.
"Lookout!" Tarantula shouted as the Delvadian hero took a shot that passed clean through his left shoulder. He tumbled to the ground as May caught him and took cover. He clutched his shoulder in pain as he removed his face mask and used it to cover the wound. "Go. I'll be fine."
She nodded in agreement. Meanwhile, Sniper kept his rifle trained on the tree they had taken cover behind. "Got you right where I want you." His psychic abilities aloud him to lock on the their location and he took aim as he watched Spider-girl shift to the left and fired just as she cam into view. He was amazed as his shot seemingly connected but somehow did no damage.
She stood up to reveal that she had wrapped the bullet in a thick ball of webbing close to her chest. "I cannot believe that that worked." She dropped it to the ground as Sniper fired again as she dove away before swinging on a web line into the trees. The sniper rounds were surprisingly accurate as one scrapped her web-shooter on her left hand which made it extremely difficult for her to maneuver in the thick jungle. "Jeez, pal! Way to cut it close." May shifted her body and swung a wide right as she spun back toward Sniper, who fired a round right at her only for the heroine to twist herself just enough for the bullet to glide across her abdomen as she punched him out of the tree and crashed unconscious on the ground.
"Well that takes care of..." She stopped and turned to see someone appear from behind a tree with purple combat armor and a visor covering his face. "Ah, great." Her shoulders slumped as she stared at the new comer. "Listen, I've had an exhausting day. Could you just give up already?"
The figure chuckled. "Funny, I was gonna ask you the same thing, May."
Spider-girl threw her hands into the air in disbelief. "Does the mask do nothing?"
"Name's Boomerang. Your old man knew mine. Kind of fits we get to meet. Wish it wasn't under these circumstances." He removed the visor mask to reveal his face.
"Fred? What the heck?!" She screamed in confusion.
"I didn't want to believe it at first but it all added up. Seems I'm not the only one that took after their pops. Listen May, this assassination thing is happening whether you like it or not. I'm giving you a chance to step aside." He drew one of his boomerangs. "One chance."
"I'm not fighting you, Fred."
"Don't see where you've got much choice." He hurled one of the razor sharp projectiles at her as May bent backwards and it passed over her and embedded itself in a tree. She came back up only to receive a rocket boot propelled knee to the chin from her now former friend. She bounced back and clung to the base of a tree.
"You're really gonna make me do this, Fred?"
"Do what? Get hit over and over again?" He flew around her and hurled more boomerangs at her. As she swung off. This cluster of weapons followed her as they seemed to track every movement she made.
"Hey, the quips are my thing, bub." May aimed at a tree ahead of her and kicked off it back towards the pursuing weapons and twisted her body to narrowly dodged them as they connected to the tree and exploded. She touched down as the tree went up in flames. "Really, Fred?! Really?!"
"You're in my way." He throws another projectile at her as she ducks under it. As it flew over her head, Boomerang hit a button on his wrist that caused the weapon to hover over her as a circular distortion field appeared around her and her body was pinned to the ground.
"Feels...like I weigh...a thousand pounds." She strained with no success to get up.
"Gravity-rangs. That should keep you down and this should keep you out." He pulled out a razor-bladed boomerang. "Sorry I gotta do this, but I need you out of my way." Just then a bullet whizzed passed his head as he turned to see Teresa with her gun trained on him. "Really?"
"Next one won't miss, I promise you that."
He turned to her with the weapon still in his hand. "You hired us to do the job, no matter what. What gives?"
"We've already lost contact with the other half of the team. If the powerhouses of the team can't do it, what chance do the rest of us have? I'm calling it." She reached for her headset. In a flash, Boomerang's weapon ripped into her left shoulder and she fell to the ground.
"Yeah. No. I've got plans here. It's my shot at the big time. Taking down Black Tarantula will net me some serious cred, enough to where no one will mess with me. Lucky for me, it's just the three of us here. Once you're an "unfortunate casualty" the rest of your team will gladly finish the job, with me of course." He hurled another boomerang at her.
Teresa put up a hand to shield herself only for a web-line to attach to the projectile and fly back at the hurler. "Oh dang." Fred said simply as this was one of his exploding weapons. The blast threw him far away as he crashed into a ditch, his armor and clothing shredded. The operative turned to see her niece breathing heavily, holding the crushed gravit-rang in one hand and the other, used to re-direct the explosive weapon still outstretched.
"Dang it, Fred! Stupid!" May said angrily as she struggled to get up. She made her way over to her aunt. "Are you..."
"I'm fine, kid. I have to say, you and you're dad sure are trouble." She smiled as she moved her uninjured arm to her headset. "All teams, we've suffered heavy casualties, gather up all assets and fall back. I repeat, fall back." She looked back to May. "You mind helping your old aunt up?"
May chuckled and picked her up. "I got ya." She then made her way over to Boomerang, who was, though badly beaten, still breathing.
"Don't worry about him. I'll radio and have my boys pick him up." Teresa looked to him. " With any luck, he'll survive. How are you holding up?" She asked as she guided May to the rendezvous point where she would meet her men.
"Sore all over, head buzzing and I think a few broken bones. So, you know, basic super hero day."
"I see. Once you drop me off, you'd better get going. My boys won't be too happy with you right now. Officially, though, you were never because we were never here, so don't expect any governmental retribution. Just, try not to step on any political toes for a while."
The two touched down in the rendezvous point, the first ones to arrive. "So what'll happen to your little hit squad?"
"Well most of them go back to prison. As for Fred, he knows your little secret so we'll have to keep a tight leash on that one."
"Promise you won't hurt him. He was my friend and I've had closer friends do much worse."
"I think I may have an idea or two for him. As for the Gambonos. I'm gonna have to let them walk. They did this job for cash. Turns out they've got Wakandan immunity. Long story."
"Great, so I get to deal with them again." May's shoulders slumped. "Still, thanks for looking out for me."
"It's what family does. Now you better get going. See you on the holidays." She watched as May swung off.
"May? May, are you alright?" Wes' concerned voice came over her headset.
"I'm okay. Just had to handle the circus in the jungle. You okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. No worse for ware. You must have been booking it to make it out to the jungle after taking out all the guys in the mansion. Black Tarantula should be paying you for security work."
"Yeah...the mansion. Guess I was just...on point today. Let's meet up at the airport. Chesbro should be more than willing to give you a hand. Love you."
"Love you two." She heard him say as he ended the call.
She swung along the jungle, making sure to evade any patrols from either side. She felt a cold chill run down her spin as she touched down on the jungle floor. "Thanks for taking care of those goons at the mansion. Don't think I could have done it without you. Now come on out."
She stood silently as another Spider-Girl slowly descended on a web. "What gave me away?" The other Spider-Girl asked as May turned to her.
"Ever since that day, I've been getting chills down my spine every once in a while. Couldn't explain it until today. Good to see you again...April."
The other Spider-Girl's suit changed from the red and blue to a darker blue and black. The mask peeled back, revealing a young woman with similar looks as May but with curly black hair. "Nice to see you, May." She touched down and the two embraced.
"I thought you were dead."
"Yeah, I thought that two. I woke up after the fire a few blocks away. I don't know if it was the explosion that knocked me clear or some form of divine comedy. Just know that I was alive."
"Why didn't you come home?"
"Really, May? After what I did, you have to ask that? I was messed up. I saw...something that day that changed things. I knew I couldn't keep going on like I was. So I left to think things threw. When I heard about LaMuerta's wedding I figured that something would be up and so..." Her face morphed into that of Mia. "I went undercover."
"You were Mia this whole time? Explains the jolts I got from you. What'll you do now?"
"Don't know. I need a new identity for a time. Maybe I'll keep an eye on Freddie. I've got a soft spot for the guy."
"He's an Aussie boomerang throwing super villain." May stated.
"Eh, nobody's perfect." She turned to leave. "Just tell your mom and dad that I'm alright. I know the old man won't be too sad to see me go."
"I know he may not show it but he was still concerned about you, in his own way. If you ever get tired of this roaming, you've always got a place at home."
"It'll probably be a long time off but thanks for the invite. See you around, May. Just make sure that when the wedding bells ring for you, you leave a seat for me. I'll be there, even if you don't know it." She swung off as May shook her head, lightly chuckling as she dusted herself off and took her time making it back home.
All in all, it was a good day for May. Saved the day, met a new family member and finding an old one is alright. The old Parker luck was finally swinging her way. She made a call to Wes. "Hey, did you pick up my stuff?...Good. Yeah, I'll be there soon. Hey, you remember my cousin, April? Well, have I got a story for you?
