As the other wizards began to sing the dirge for the silent lord, kit turned away. Away from the smell of the blood in the water, away from the sight of ed with his jaws covered in Nita's flesh, and away from the feel of a wizardry that has done what it was meant to do. The one thing he couldn't turn away from however, was the feeling of emptiness, that half of him was gone.
As he escaped the circle of protection, and swam upward, he saw the light of mid morning sun, shining through the murky waters. He sighed as he swam past smaller fish, and every once an a while, a sickly looking plant.
As he broke the surface, a while later, the sun warmed his cool back. He swam quickly over to the dock where their swimsuits lay. He gently pulled off the whalesark, and after putting his trunks back on, he dragged himself onto the dock. He lay there a long time, with salty tears running down his cheeks as he stared at the horizon, hoping that he would see the arched back of a humpback whale to emerge from the waves, a humpback whale with a human's eyes. At the same time though, he knew that he wouldn't. That he wouldn't ever see her face screw up as she contemplated the answer to a problem, or her hazel eyes sparkle when she finally found it. She was gone, and he would never see her again.
