Chapter One: Narnia in danger
Edmund ran a hand over his face, groaning as he walked to the door.
It was too early to be anything close to awake, and as he grabbed the doorhandle he sighed, tying his hardest to keep his eyes open.
"I was just coming to wake you."
Because he was still half asleep, the sudden presence of his brother and the sound of his voice made him nearly jump out of his skin, and as he pulled his door too, he made it a point to glare at Peter.
Peter raised an eyebrow, stopping beside the apparently rather grumpy seventeen year old. "You woke up on the wrong side of the bed." He muttered.
Edmund stared at Peter for a while, before the glare disappeared and he sighed again, shaking his head. "Sorry," He breathed. "It's just way too early to be awake."
Peter chuckled. "Perhaps it is slightly early yes." He agreed slowly. "But after the meeting we've got the rest of the day free, so you're more than welcome to go take a nap."
"I think I might do just that." Edmund told him, properly closing his bedroom door before standing up straight. "Shall we head to this meeting then?"
"After breakfast." Peter said firmly. "We've got time don't worry."
"Obviously." Edmund agreed, already heading off down the corridor.
Peter followed him with a small smile, and they made it to the dining room in just under five minutes, saying a quick hello to anyone they passed.
Edmund slumped down at the table, running a hand through his hair before grabbing a slice of toast.
"Wonder who's been up cooking already." Peter said aloud as he eyed the food spread across the table.
Edmund nodded a little. "They probably knew we were gonna be up early." He told his brother, grabbing the butter followed by some strawberry jam.
Peter sat down in his usual seat beside his brother, spooning some hot porridge into a bowl and grabbing some honey. "We've got half an hour." He told his brother. "Don't bother rushing."
Edmund was glad of this, and took his time eating, before pouring himself a small cup of coffee and leaning back in his chair.
"It's a coffee kind of morning is it?" Peter said, chuckling.
Edmund nodded slowly. "It really is." He muttered. "When I'm woken up at 6am, it's a coffee morning."
Peter smirked a little, finishing off his porridge before pouring himself a cup of tea, making a nasty face at Edmund's coffee as he did so... he really didn't like coffee at all.
The two finished up in silence, before Peter stood from his chair. "Come on then." He breathed. "Let's get this over with."
"And then we nap." Edmund grumbled, standing beside him.
Peter rolled his eyes playfully, but had to admit the idea did sound rather appealing. "Then we nap." He agreed. "And then I reckon I'll go for a walk."
Edmund raised an eyebrow. "You do you I guess." He mumbled.
Peter laughed, but didn't say anything as the two left the room, heading down to the meeting room where they found Orious and around ten other people, Tumnus being amongst them.
"You called a meeting, Orious?" Peter asked, his King voice easily coming through as he sat down at the head of the table, Edmund sitting in the seat beside him.
"I did, your majesty." Orious replied. "And I apologise for it being so early, I have a very busy day ahead but this is of importance."
"In that case I'm sure it is." Peter agreed. "What is it you wish to discuss."
Orious hesitated only slightly, for a few seconds, before taking a deep breath. "It has come to our attention that Narnia is in danger." He announced.
Peter frowned deeply at this, concern etched onto his face.
He and Edmund shared a quick, worried glance before Peter turned back to the Centaur. "How is it in danger?" He asked.
"There's a powerful magician, a powerful wizard, somewhere in the boarders." Orious told him. "He's only been heard of before in books, but after multiple sightings we knew we couldn't deny it any longer."
Edmund stepped in here. "So we get rid of him." He said, voice firm and confident.
Orious looked unsure. "That might be-" He paused for a moment. "Impossible."
Peter was confused. "How would that be impossible?" He asked.
"He's one of the most powerful magicians ever known, it is actually impossible to kill him." Orious tried to explain. "His magic is beyond anything anyone can even try and understand, he's dangerous, and the one thing everyone knows about him, is he never stops until he gets what he wants."
"Well, do we know what he wants?" Peter asked.
"Unfortunately not." Orious replied. "But he wants something, or else who wouldn't be in Narnia."
Peter nodded slowly, taking a moment to think, although he couldn't say it did much. He was trying to process all this information, a magician, immortal, wants something, don't know what he wants, won't stop until he gets what he wants...
Peter took a deep breath and turned his head to look at Edmund, who also seemed to be thinking for a moment before making eye contact with his brother.
"An immortal magician-" Edmund said slowly after a while, taking a deep breath. "That wants something..." He paused for a second. "Can we go searching for him and find out what he wants, what he's here for?"
Orious looked wary. "That might not be the best of ideas." He admitted.
Edmund sighed. "So what, we just sit around waiting for him to make the first move?" He asked.
Orious looked apologetically at his two Kings. "That may be the best option," He explained. "Right now, you, as our monarchs, are our top priority, we need to keep you four safe."
Edmund stood. "And Narnia is our top priority," He said, leaning his hands on the table. "We will protect it."
"And the best way to do that is to wait," Orious said. "If we went after him, it could make things a whole lot worse..."
"And if he tries to hurt someone?" Edmund asked. "If we can't kill him, and he won't stop until he kills whoever he wants to kill, what are we supposed to do?"
Orious stared at him for a while, before glancing at the rest of the people in the room. "No one knows..."
Edmund eventually collapsed back into his chair, running a hand over his face.
He could almost sense Peter staring at him, but didn't move his hand to make eye contact.
Peter sighed after a moment, and stood himself. "I'm calling an end to this meeting," He announced. "We will all go away, keep this information top secret, and try and figure out what to do. Some of you need to gather any information you can on this magician, and the guards around the castle will be doubled, tripled if they have to be. That magician won't get anywhere near Cair Paravel, and we will not let him harm anyone. That is all, thank you."
Edmund heard Peter leave straight after this, and quickly jumped up and hurried after him, catching him up in the corridor. "What do we do?" He all but whispered.
Peter sighed. "I don't know," He mumbled. "An immortal wizard who won't stop until he's done what he came to do... sounds like we can't do anything."
"We can always do something." Edmund reminded him. "There's always something to be done, sometimes we just have to work a lot harder to figure out what."
Peter glanced at him, before nodding slowly. "I guess." He breathed. "I want you to stay safe though, no sneaking out, no going out after dark, the girls too, the second the sun sets everyone is to be inside the castle."
Edmund nodded. "Okay, that's fine." He said. "I'll do that, I promise."
Peter seemed satisfied at the promise, and took a deep breath. "I'm going to go up to my room," He said. "I might be able to think more clearly alone."
Edmund bit his lip, but nodded in understanding. "Yeah, I understand that." He breathed. "Perhaps I'll do the same, come find me if you figure something out?"
Peter smiled weakly. "You too." He told him, before he reached his bedroom door.
Edmund waited until he was inside before walking down the corridor a little to his own room, where he noticed there was already two extra guards stood along the corridor, one close to his door.
He gave the guard a small nod and smile, before entering his room and closing the door behind him.
He leant against the door, pulling his crown off and running a hand through his hair. Out of all the things he expected that meeting to be about, it certainly hadn't been that.
An immortal wizard?
He didn't like the sound of it at all. The wizard wanted something, but what? Edmund wanted to know for his own peace of mind, but he did agree with Orious when he said it probably wasn't a good idea to purposely go after him.
It sounded like he used dark, dangerous magic, and as Edmund stood there he couldn't help but wonder whether it was anything like the Witches magic.
Just the thought made him shudder, and as he walked over to his bed, he felt suddenly cold, and he didn't like it at all.
He sat on the very edge of the bed, staring ahead at the blank wall, trying to figure out if there was anything they could do to stop the magician.
He hadn't even been sat there for five minutes before he heard a thud come from next door.
He frowned a little, wondering what Peter was up to. Their rooms were connected so the other side of the wall was where his brother was, hence why he knew who the thud had come from.
He waited for a few moments, but after hearing nothing else he shrugged a little and settled back down, going back to thinking, which if he was honest was easier said than done.
His head snapped up though when he heard a loud cry, and his stomach dropped as his heart sank when he heard just who had let out that painful, agonising cry...
"Peter..."
