Madeline and Riley
Prologue:
It was summer time in Paris which meant schools were getting out for the summer. It also meant it was time for graduations as well. In the year 1988, at an old house which was converted into a boarding school for girls a long time ago. The teacher Miss Helen Karen and her Aid Miss Clavel had just finished the graduation of her recent students. The girls were now going to be moving to another larger boarding school in the middle of Paris. The girls were quite happy about being done with school. It was also the last day that Miss Helen Karen was going to be the main teacher. As she was retiring the next day after helping with the new little girls.
The next day at breakfast June 1st, Miss Helen Karen said "Now girls before you leave for the summer I would like you all to stay to help Miss Clavel welcome her new little girls who will be arriving soon with their parents. The older girls nodded and finished their breakfast. They then all stood outside and waited.
A few minutes later, a long limo pulled up and out of it came a man named Lord Cucu Face who was the boss of Miss Helen Karen, soon to be Miss Clavel's school.
"Bonjour Miss Clavel, Miss Helen Karen Bonjour Girls, Lord CucuFace greeted.
"Bonjour Lord CucuFace the group greeted back.
"Are you ready for your new little girls Miss Clavel?" Lord CucuFace asked.
"Oui I have all their paperwork and the classroom and bedroom are also ready. Miss Clavel said
"Good, Good, Lord CucuFace said. Just then many cars pulled up to the side of the house. Parents got out and opened the door helping their little girls out. Pretty soon there were 11 little girls standing in front of the school looking nervous. Lord CucuFace stepped forward and said "Bonjour Little girls welcome to your school. My name is Lord CuCuFace and I'm the chairman of the board of trustees. Now I would like you to meet your teacher Miss Clavel. Lord Cucuface said. Miss Clavel looked a little nervous.
Miss Helen Karen said go on Miss Clavel you got this Handle.
as Miss Clavel came forward. With a smile Miss Clavel said, "Bonjour I'm happy to be your teacher and Can't wait to get to know you better.
The 11 little girls whose names were Anne Chloe Danielle Ellie Janine Lulu Monique Nicole Nona Sylvie Yvette. gave small smiles. Miss Clavel then allowed the little girl's parents to say goodbye. After many hugs.
The little girls followed Miss Clavel and Miss Helen Karen along with Lord Cucuface inside the old house and were led into the sitting room where the older girls whose names were Aggie, Vicki Lucinda Sylvette Marie-Odile Beatrice Elizabeth Veronica Chantal Serena Lolo. had been setting up some tea for the girls. Miss Clavel came in and the little girls sat down with Lord CucuFace. After drinking their tea,
Lord CucuFace told the girls the rules of the school. After that was done, Miss Helen Karen .turned to her former students and said, "Please take the little girls' suitcases to the bedroom and help them change into their uniforms please.
"Oui Miss Helen Karen ." The older girls said as they took the suitcases from the little girls.
The little girls followed the older girls upstairs to the bedroom where they unpacked and changed into their blue school uniforms.
While the little girls got changed. After the little girls got changed, as Miss Clavel came in and told her new students to follow her back into the sitting room. The 11 little girls followed Miss Clavel leaving the 11 older girls alone.
After a few moments of Silence, Beatrice huffed and angrily said "I can't believe we have to move to a new school we've been with Miss Helen Karen for as long as we can remember. and now we're all going to have to get used to new teachers and new rules.
"I know said Viki." as then heard Miss Helen Karen calling for them. The older girls went downstairs and saw that their families were there to pick them up. After saying goodbye and thanking Miss Helen Karen and Miss Clavel for all they had done for them, The older girls left. Leaving Miss Clavel with her new 11 little students.
Miss Helen Karen said will i guess this is Good bye Miss Clavel if you need anything just call me Have fun Girls
as the summer months passed quickly and on August 1st 1988 the new school year begins . since 11 little girls had been with Miss Clavel since June the girls were now used to the school and all the rules. Miss Clavel was very Pleased with how quickly her new girls had settled in. as the girls has also become fast friends with one another. yes the month passed by quickly and before they knew it it was the end of August. on Sunday August 31st. as Miss Clavel and the girls had just gotten home after a trip to the Park. the group had only just got inside when the phone rang.
"Go wash up girls" Miss Clavel told her students who went upstairs to wash up for dinner.
"Hello?" Miss Clavel answered the phone.
"Bonjour Miss Clavel this is Lord CucuFace.
"Bonjour Lord Cucu Face what can I do for you?" Miss Clavel asked
Lord Cucu Face said. "I have received a phone call by a lady named Kathy Green. She's an aunt of five-year-old twins named Riley and Madeline and she let me know that she has enrolled them at your school. Their Aunt will be coming with them tomorrow so you can meet her and the twins."
"Alright, I look forward to meeting them." Miss Clavel said, and she hung up the phone.
Meanwhile the 11 little girls had come downstairs. Miss Clavel then led them into the dining room for dinner. During dinner,
Miss Clavel said, "Little girls tomorrow two new girls will be starting with us.
"What are the girls' names? Nicole asked.
"Their names are Riley and Madeline. They are twins and they are also only five years old. So I want you all to be on your best behavior and make the twins feel welcome." Miss Clavel told her students.
"Oui Miss Clavel," the little girls said.
After finishing dinner the girls went upstairs and brushed their teeth and went to bed. The next morning the girls did their morning routine. After breakfast, Miss Clavel told her students to go play in their room so she could meet the twins and their Aunt without making them get overwhelmed. Miss Clavel had just finished tidying up the parlor, when a knock was heard at the door. Miss Clavel went and answered the door. Standing on the stoop was Lord CucuFace standing behind him was a lady who was holding the hands of the two little girls.
"Bonjour Miss Clavel I want to introduce you to your new little girls and their Aunt. Lord Cucuface said
"Oui please come in." Miss Clavel said as she led her guests inside to the Parlor.
After sitting down, the Aunt of the twins said "Bonjour My name is Kathy Green and These are my nieces, Riley and Madeline.
Miss Clavel smiled down at the little girls. "Bonjour my name is Miss Clavel and I'm excited to have the girls with us.
Kathy turned to her nieces and with a stern voice Kathy said hello girls.
"Bonjour," Madeline and Riley said quietly.
Both girls were very nervous about what was going on.
"Here's the girl's paperwork and information. Lord CucuFace said, handing over an envelope. Miss Clavel opened it and read through the papers. Her eyes widened and she looked up at the girls and their Aunt. "Their parents have died?
" Kathy nodded " Yes they died in a house fire The girls had been living with me since they were three.
"I see." Miss Clavel said. Clearing her throat the teacher said now I think it would be a good time for Madeline and Riley to meet the other girls.
Kathy nodded. "Oh I will be taking the girls home with me some weekends." Kathy said.
"Okay that will be fine nothing in the rulebook says that family members can't visit their children." Lord Cucuface said but they will have to be back every Sunday before 4: pm.
Kathy nodded and looked at her nieces and her sweet voice turned stern once again as she told the girls "Be Good little girls." understand
"Oui Aunt Kathy." The twins said. After Lord Cucuface and Kathy left. the house.
Miss Clavel then said "Well Madeline and Riley let's go meet your other classmates." Madeline and Riley took each other's hand and followed Miss Clavel upstairs. Opening the door to the bedroom, the other little girls looked up. Miss Clavel said, "Little girls this is Madeline and Riley. "Bonjour" the girls said.
Miss Clavel smiled. "Now then Madeline, Riley, Why don't you two get changed into your uniform and then we will take a trip to the zoo. Madeline and Riley looked at their new teacher surprised. " Madeline and Riley said "Really?"
Miss Clavel nodded. "I read in your paperwork that you both love animals. Non?
Madeline and Riley nodded and finally gave small smiles and hurried to get changed. After getting changed the girls all went to the zoo. That night Miss Clavel was tucking the girls in. Coming over to Madeline and Riley's bed , their teacher said. "Now don't worry if you wake up scared. I know it's hard to get used to a new place." Madeline and Riley nodded as Miss Clavel gave the twins a hug.
A few days later Madeline and Riley had made friends with everyone. Now instead of only 11 little girls, there were now 13 little girls and that's where our story begins.
In the Fall of 1988,
A woman closes the window. A man walks into a house with bread as two birds look from the roof, and a postman plays the accordion on the streets.
Narrator: In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines lived 13 little girls in two straight lines. The girls walked down the stairs However Madeline and Riley slid down the banister.
The Girls curtsy and say, "Bonjour."
in the dining room that night. Miss Clavel and the girls are sitting around the table for dinner.
The Girls: "We love our bread, we love our butter, but most of all we love each other!"
Narrator: In two straight lines they broke their bread, brushed their teeth, and went to bed. As soon as Miss Clavel had closed the door, Danielle threw her pillow across the room almost hitting Madeline.
Madeline ducked and said "Close call!" A sneaky smile then came to her face as she stood up and threw her pillow. The pillow went flying hitting Lulu.
"We will get you!" Lulu said, as the girls grabbed their pillows.
"Shall we, Riley?" Madeline asked.
"You know it Madeline- nobody messes with us and gets away with it!" as Riley and Madeline popped back up with two pillows
As the pillow battle raged on and on and the girls became rowdier, Madeline then got an idea and she pulled her twin sister aside and explained her plan to Riley. "Great idea Maddie." Riley said then the two girls silently prepared for the prank, unnoticed by the other eleven girls.
Right when it seemed that Nicolle would be the winner of the pillow fight, The small girls shrieked
Madeline and Riley were hiding in the corner making shadow puppets.
"Mon Dieu, what is that?" gasped Nicole.
"Quickly, hide!" the eleven girls shrieked as they dove under their beds in fright.
"Monster! Monster!" exclaimed Danielle.
Quickly let her Hide Chole whisper
Nicole Whisper silly we are Hiding"
"Do you think this was a good idea?" whispered Riley nervously to Madeline.
Madeline nodded giggled a little however her giggling gave the prank away.
"It is only Riley&Madeline Nicole said
as usual Chole said
Dainelle said we will get you Riley & Madeline"
Nicole said be careful
Lulu said we are going to get your two As the girls all jumped onto a bed Madeline started to pull a spring under the bed making a creaking sound. Riley chuckled and said shh what is that Noise"
Chloe pulled the cover back revealing what Madeline was doing and said, "You cannot fool us again, Madeline."
"But we fool you every night!" retorted Madeline.
Nicole said with a yawn " she is right let us go to sleep before she or Riley play any more tricks!"
Narrator: And as one day became another, most of all, they loved each other. The next morning as the Sun began to rise, the 13 girls got ready for the day with somewhat guilty and tired smiles. After breakfast, the girls went on their walk.
All the girls and Miss Clavel were walking, and they were amused by the juggling clown.
Narrator: : They smiled at the good…
The girls were walking to the park when a street performer who was dressed like a clown popped out from behind a lamp post.
Madeline: Bonjour, Monsieur Clown! The clown tipped his small hat and did a little dance amusing the 13 little girls. The clown then came over to Madeline and Madeline copied the Dance.
Madeline had an idea as well and said try this , Monsieur Clown as she rolled her hat on her finger. The clown took the redheads hat and copied the trick and and then gave threw the hat back to Madeline"
Madeline caught her Hat curtsied politely like the good little girl she was and said Merci. The clown tipped his hat once more and then left.
As Madeline got back into line with the other girls', they all said We smile at the good.
as the Girls Giggled happily.
As they walked farther, they saw a criminal being arrested by the officer.
Narrator: They frowned at the bad…
Girls said We frown at the bad.
As the girls kept walking Riley saw a balloon seller. "Excuse Moi Miss Clavel can we get a balloon si vous plait? Miss Clavel thought about it for a moment and then smiled. Oui you girls have done really well with your schoolwork. Miss Clavel then went up to the seller and bought 13 colorful balloons. Merci Miss Clavel the little girls said.
As they were walking they saw a soldier standing by the entrance to a church. The man's leg was wrapped up in a bandage and was holding a crutch. Seeing the man The girls eyes started to fill with tears.
Narrator: And sometimes, they were very sad.
"Very Very sad!" the girls said together. Riley looked at the man and then looked at her balloon. Madeline knew what her sister was thinking. as they gave their balloons to a wounded soldier. The other girls gave their balloons to the wounded man as well. "Merci little girls." The man said. The man then looked at Miss Clavel and said "You have very generous little girls.
Merci sir Miss Clavel said as she was very proud of her students.
The girls soon reached the clocktower.
(Paris clock tower bell rings)
Narrator: They left the house at half past nine, in rain - or shine. Such good little girls in two straight lines, except the smallest, Madeline who was known for being a little mischievous along with her sister Riley. Madeline then ran ahead and jumped up onto a plant pot. Miss Clavel gasped and called "Madeline. Madeline!"

Madeline giggled
Miss Clavel gave a sigh of relief and picked Madeline up and carried her for the rest of the walk. The teacher never had to worry about her former students being mischievous. The girls laughed playfully. And walked home.
That afternoon The girls were in the kitchen when two small grey mice scurried out of the wall and onto the twin's hands.
Narrator: To little creatures, she was nice, and she was not afraid of mice.
As the eleven girls shouted in fright, As Madeline showed them the mice. Riley said, "shh don't scare the mice!"
Madeline said, "They are our friends!"
The rest of the seasons passed by quickly. Narrator: They love Fall, Winter, snow, and ice. And during another trip to the zoo Madeline told tiger at the zoo, Pooh-pooh!
As the girls crossed a footbridge over the Seine River one day, Riley quickly climbed on top of the suspended bridge's rampart.
Narrator: And nobody knew quite so well how to frighten Miss Clavel.
Riley:
I'm known to frighten Miss Clavel,
Sometimes even more.

Riley chuckled and smiled with that Ms. Clavel gently pulling her back down onto the footpath. Next to her sister
"How was the plane ride?" asked Madeline as she saw the whole thing play out.
"Fun! You would have love it, Madeline," said Riley.
When the girls reached home, it was dinner time.
Girls: We love our bread, we love our butter, and most of all, we love each other.
Narrator: In that vine-covered house, all was happy and fine - till that morning the girls left in those two straight lines. It was early fall in Paris, a very cold day, but poor Riley did not want to play. One day Riley woke up with a small cough. She didn't think anything of it though. After breakfast the girls put on their coats and went to play a game of football (aka Soccer)
Riley was sitting on the bench watching the leaves fall from the Autumn trees but she still didn't feel like saying a thing. She watched everyone play on this chilly day, but Riley still didn't want to play. Madeline went over to Riley and said, "What's wrong, Riley? Don't you want to play with us?" asked Madeline.
"Oui, my twin, but my voice feels a little funny today," I seem to have woken up with a small cough. I really don't feel like playing. said Riley.
But "Riley, you love Football. We'll have to forfeit the game if you don't play. You are one of our best players!" insisted Madeline.
Riley nodded and said, "Sorry Madeline, but I'd rather just sit and watch the Football game from here."
The next day when Riley awoke that morning she went to brush her teeth and when she took a sip of water, she winced because her throat was a little sore. Hoping that this was only a temporary thing and that she would feel better after eating something, Riley and the other girls went downstairs for breakfast. After doing their classes, Miss Clavel called Riley and Madeline into the parlor because Aunt Kathy had stopped by for a visit. After sitting down Madeline and Riley poured the tea. Riley sat down next to her sister and took a long sip hoping the warm beverage would help her throat.
"How have my nieces been doing since they arrived?" Aunt Kathy asked.
"Miss Clavel smiled and said "They have been wonderful little girls and they are such a pleasure to have around.
"Kathy nodded.
"We've been learning so much Aunt Kathy." Madeline said with a smile. "Haven't we Riley?"
"Oui Riley said softly.
" Miss Clavel looked at Riley and her eyebrows furrowed as she noticed Riley trying to keep her eyes open.
"Riley are you alright?" Miss Clavel asked the girl.
"Oui Miss Clavel I seem to have a small sore throat though." Riley said
"Oh dear well let's get you straight to bed." Miss Clavel said starting to get up.
"Aunt Kathy shook her head and said. "Now Miss Clavel there's no need for that.
" Miss Clavel looked at Kathy confused "Why not?" The teacher asked.
Kathy said Because Riley's around a lot of new people, her immune system just needs to get built up, so her having a small sore throat is nothing to be concerned about."
Miss Clavel nodded "Maybe you're right."
"Don't worry Miss Clavel I'm sure it will pass quickly." Kathy said.
Miss Clavel nodded again.
"Well thank you for the lovely Visit." Kathy said as she gave Madeline and Riley a small hug.
" Kathy then left. After she left Miss Clavel turned to the Twins and said, "Come on Riley let's get you tucked into bed. Miss Clavel said.
"Miss Clavel you heard what Aunt Kathy said though." Madeline said.
"I know my little one but Riley's throat needs to recover and rest is the best thing." Miss Clavel told her small student
. Riley went into the bedroom and changed into her nightgown she then climbed into bed. Miss Clavel tucked the covers around the girl. Riley said "Merci" her eyes closed as soon as her head hit the pillow. Riley slept the rest of the day not even waking up when the girls started to pillow fight.
The next day Riley's throat hurt even more. "Good morning Sis How are you feeling today." Madeline asked her sister. My throat still hurts Riley said Raspily. "Aw I'm sorry Riley." Madeline said giving her twin a hug. After breakfast, Miss Clavel took the girls to the park. Riley just sat on the bench watching her friends play.
NARRATOR: , the poor petit thing refused to smile, even for a little while. As the girls left the Park ,
Madeline said, "Riley, what's up? You are never this quiet." Riley just nodded and hoped by not using her voice her throat would get better.
Narrator: The Juggling clown popped out to play, but Riley simply walked away.
"Sorry Monsieur Clown, next time," said Madeline.
The next day Riley could only whisper. She didn't eat any breakfast. After Breakfast the group went to the zoo.
Narrator: At the zoo, 11 girls walked two by two. Miss Clavel noticed this as the tiger roared in his cage.
"Where are Riley and Madeline?" asked Chloe.
"Yes, they must scare the tiger back !" Nicole chimed in.
"Oui, oui, where are both girls?" asked Miss Clavel worriedly.
The 11 girls then started calling and looking for the twins.
"Riley and Madeline?!" called Chloe.
Nicole went up to the zookeeper and asked
"Have you seen two twins come by, Monsieur Zookeeper?" asked Nicole. Miss Clavel joined them and said Oui one is little and has red hair and the other has black hair. , come with me," said the zookeeper. The girls and Miss Clavel followed the zookeeper to the monkey cage.
"Riley?" called Danielle.
"Madeline?" called Lulu.
"Riley and Madeline, "There you two are, you must not run off like that. exclaimed Miss Clavel." "Is everything alright?"
"Oui, oui, Miss Clavel I'm fine, really," said Madeline.
Riley's voice was in a whisper as she said "Oui, oui, Ms. Clavel, just a little tired."
"Aha! Fatigue. I think you little girls stayed up late last night after I turned out the light," said Miss Clavel.
"Oui, Miss Clavel," replied Madeline guiltily.
Miss Clavel laughed and said "Come, mes petites, we need you at the tiger's cage. Nicole is so scared."
When they reached the tiger's cage, Madeline said, "You try it this time, Riley!"
"Pooh," was all poor Riley could manage to say. Madeline just shook her head.
"Oh Riley, you still need practice, but soon you will be as good as me!" said Madeline cheerfully, "Pooh-pooh!"
When the girls returned home, Miss Clavel decided to give Kathy a call to ask her to take Riley to the doctor Miss Clavel was growing more and more concerned for her student. Miss Clavel dialed the number of the girl's aunt.
"Hello Kathy Green speaking."
"Bonjour Kathy this is Miss Clavel."
"What can I do for you Miss Clavel." Kathy asked.
"Well I'm asking if you could please come pick up Riley and take her to the doctor it seems her sore throat is not getting any better. So if.
" Kathy cut Miss Clavel off and said. "Miss Clavel I told you before Riley's immune system just needs to build up her throat will get better soon." Kathy then hung up the phone muttering to herself "It's only a small sore throat why would I take that girl to the doctor.
Back at the old house:
Miss Clavel sighed and just shook her head.
That night at dinner Riley didn't feel hungry, so she fed the mice instead. After dinner The girls went up to brush their teeth.
"Riley can you pass me my water cup? Madeline asked her sister.
"Oui Riley whispered. Passing the cup to Madeline. The girls then went to bed.
At Midnight though Riley awoke to her throat on fire. Riley had never been in this much pain before. Her eyes filled with tears and they rolled down her cheeks. Getting out of bed Riley went to her sister's bed and shook her awake.
"Riley what's wrong?" Madeline asked her sister concerned.
"Ah.. Ah.." Riley pointed to her throat as she tried to say something but it only came out in a gurgle.
Madeline gave a small shriek which also woke up the others as well.
"Madeline What's the matter." Nicole asked. "Ry..
Riley can't speak at all." Madeline said as she started to cry loudly.
Narrator: In the middle of the night, Miss Clavel turned on her light and said, "Something is not right."

Miss Clavel opened the girls' bedroom door where she found the girls all crowded around Madeline's bed. Miss Clavel quickly made her way to the bedroom. "Madeline what's wrong, did you have a nightmare?"
Madeline sniffed and wiped her eyes
"Miss Clavel! Riley can't speak!" Madeline said as she started to cry once more.
"Miss Clavel gave Madeline a hug. "Don't worry Madeline I'm going to call Dr Cohn right now to see why Ryley's throat hasn't been getting better. Just stay with your sister please." Miss Clavel then rushed downstairs to call the doctor.
In less than an hour, Dr. Cohn quickly made his way to the vined house near the Eiffel Tower to see what had taken away Riley's voice.
Madeline watched as the doctor unpacked his supplies. He then turned to Madeline and said.
"Madeline, could you wait with your friends please? I need to see Riley alright?" said the doctor kindly. Madeline shook her head.
Riley looked into her twin sister's eyes to let her know that she would be alright. Madeline gave her sister a hug and Madeline went to stand with her friends.
"Riley open your mouth please. Say 'ahhh'," instructed the doctor.
Riley did as he said, and the doctor was shocked at what he saw and frowned. Just as he had suspected, she had severe Tonsillitis. Riley saw the doctor frown, her eyes widened in fear. Dr Chon saw this and said "Don't worry Riley you're going to be alright." The doctor then said Miss Clavel can you come over here please?'' Miss Clavel hurried down to Riley's bed. Miss Clavel was shocked with what the doctor had told her.
"Riley must be operated at once, otherwise her throat will get more infected," he told Miss Clavel. I'll be right back. With that the doctor went to the phone and called the ambulance. When he came back, the doctor asked Miss Clavel. Her tonsils are so infected why didn't she be seen at the doctor"? Miss Clavel told the doctor about what Kathy had said and that it was nothing to worry about." Dr Chon was shocked but then saw a flashing red light from outside the window. "Alright I'm going to take Riley with me now." I'll have the hospital call you as soon as the surgery is over.
The girls and Miss Clavel watched as Dr. Cohn took Riley in his arms. And carried her down the stairs. The girls all started to cry as they saw the van drive away into the night.
Don't worry mes petites, all will be well," said Miss Clavel.
Narrator: In a car with one red light, they drove out into the night.
Madeline hurried to the classroom and found a book about the body. Taking the book the little girl hurried back downstairs.
I will have to "Give Kathy a call," said Miss Clavel.
Miss Clavel dialed the number to Kathy's house.
Kathy woke up to her phone ringing. Hello Kathy said.
Kathy it's Miss Clavel."
"Miss Clavel, is is 1 A.M., is something the matter with the one of the girls?" asked Aunt Kathy sleepily.
Miss Clavel sighed "Kathy, you are needed at the hospital. Riley is going to have her tonsils out," Miss Clavel explained.
"Okay, I will be right over, Miss Clavel. Thank you for calling me!" said Aunt Kathy. Kathy sighed and went to get dressed mumbling to herself "Riley you brat why must this happen now?"
Meanwhile, Riley was whisked to the operating room and was on the operating table. Ethan, the anesthesiologist, said "Now sweetheart I just want you to relax and you'll be fast asleep. Riley nodded as he put a mask on Riley's face.
"I can do anything," mumbled Riley as her eyes closed.
Back at the old house, Miss Clavel took Madeline's hand and kindly said, "Madeline, it's time to go back to bed, ma petite. Aunt Kathy is staying with Riley right now at the Hospital, so there is no need to worry. I'm so glad you had woken up and helped Riley. I am very proud of you." Miss Clavel said as she gave the trembling girl a hug. When the small girl was once again tucked into bed she asked "Riley will be alright won't she Miss Clavel?"
Miss Clavel said yes "She'll be just fine.
Narrator: But Madeline didn't feel proud for helping her then opened the book she had borrowed from the classroom and read about the tonsils. Madeline sighed She just wanted her twin back, safe and well again. It was these thoughts that kept her tossing and turning for the rest of the night. The next morning the rest of the girls were shocked to see that Riley was still away.
"Where is Riley? I was hoping that last night was a dream, but she is not Here," said Nicole.
"Now Riley has no voice," said Chloe sadly.
"No, silly, it is her tonsils," said Madeline.
"But what is la tonsils?" asked Danielle.
Chole scoffed. "What are tonsils? Everyone know that tonsils are the things in the leg!"
"In the leg?" squeaked Danielle, "The leg?! Now Riley will have a hole in her leg?!"
"No, no! The tonsils are the things in the arm, aren't they?" Nicole said.
"Riley will have a hole in her arm?" asked Lulu.
"A hole?!" The other girls, minus Madeline, exclaimed in alarm.
"No, the tonsils are the things in the tummy," said Yvette firmly.
"Then Riley will have a hole in her tummy?" asked Danielle.
Madeline finally had enough on what her friends were saying Taking a deep breath to control her anger
"Good guess but no. Her tonsils are in the back of her throat," Madeline answered in annoyance. Feeling tired and overwhelmed, not to mention frustrated at her friends' continuous questions, Madeline stormed out of the room. She tried to calm herself as she went downstairs, reminding herself that Riley would be okay. Yet how could her friends be that stupid?! She loved her friends, but she wished they would show some understanding of what was going on with Riley. She was struggling to deal with it emotionally, and none of her friends' stupid helped her mood.
Narrator: In the night, without a pout, the inflamed tonsils were taken out. Kathy was sitting in the waiting room waiting for the doctor. Dr Chon came out of the operating room and went up to Kathy. "Kathy Green?"
"Oui that's me Kathy said standing up.
" My name is Dr Chon and I was the one who operated on Riley."
"Is my niece going to be alright?" Kathy asked with mock concern.
The doctor nodded "Yes she will be just fine however, her tonsils were so large and that's what made her throat very infected. I am going to keep her here for a week while she recovers she's in a room now I'll take you to her."
Kathy nodded and got up and followed the doctor.
Meanwhile Dr Chon had started becoming suspicious of Kathy. Riley woke up after several hours in a room decked with flowers.
Riley sat up in bed and looked around. "Madeline must be in the next room on the right," she thought. As a nurse came into the hospital room. Hello Riley "Here is some mineral water for you, Riley, and tonight, you will have ice cream," said Nurse Jennifer.
"Merci madame!" said Riley.
Nurse Jennifer smiled. "Is there anything else you would like?" she asked.
"Some mice, s'il vous plait," said Riley. Hoarsely
"Some ice?" asked Nurse Jennifer, looking puzzled.
No madame, some mice. Please?" asked Riley sweetly.
Aunt Kathy chuckled. "Sorry about that, Nurse Jennifer. Riley has quite an imagination," she said.
Riley turned her head and was surprised to see her aunt sitting next to her bed.
"Aunt Kathy, what are you doing here?" asked Riley.
"I have been here since Miss Clavel called me. Now lie down please," said Aunt Kathy.
"Madeline is next door right," asked Riley.
"No Riley, I'm sorry dear," said Aunt Kathy. Madeline is fine though. what could Happen"?
Riley said Madeline doesn't know when to Smile or Frown on our walks without me leading.
Kathy rolled her eyes.
Narrator: Back at the house the girls said a prayer that Riley would soon be there. With their second bravest away, they weren't amused their daily routine. They became very confused. With little Madeline leading the way, they frowned at the good, they smiled at the bad, and they didn't know when to be happy or sad.
"Hmm, I think this is not right," said Chloe.
"Oh Chole, it's only Madeline's first time lead us," said Nicole.
"Oui, but I am so confused," said Chloe.
Soon, it was dinnertime.
GIRLS: …and most of all, we love our butter!
"What?!" exclaimed Nicole.
"No, first we brush our bread, and then we break our teeth!" said Danielle.
Narrator: Meanwhile, Riley ate and drank on her bed where there was a crank. and A crack in the ceiling had the habit of sometimes looking like a rabbit. Outside were birds, trees, and sky, and so ten days passed quickly by also Riley had received a roommate by the name of Lucy who also had her tonsils out as well.
One fine morning, Miss Clavel asked, "Isn't this a fine day to visit Riley?"
The girls eagerly got ready to leave, but Miss Clavel said, "Not so fast mes petites! First, we must finish our breakfast." Madeline was so excited that she quickly finished her breakfast.
Miss Clavel took the little girls on the bus to the market to help pick out the perfect gifts for Riley. They decided to buy a lovely get-well card and a stuffed bear for Riley. When they arrived at the hospital, Madeline couldn't stand still. "Don't worry Madeline you'll see your sister soon." Miss Clavel chuckled seeing the little girls eagerness. When the girls went into Riley's hospital room, they were shocked to see plenty of other gifts from close family and relatives.
"Hi everyone Riley called from her bed where she was eating a big bowl of ice cream. Madeline quickly ran to her sister's bed and gave her a big hug. "I've missed you so much." Madeline told her twin."
Riley smiled and said "I've missed you as well.
"Hello sweetheart." Kathy said as she gave Madeline a hug."
"Hi Aunt Kathy" Madeline said back. Miss Clavel and Kathy then left the room leaving the group alone.
"Um, Riley, we have no family, well just for Aunt Kathy remember?" said Madeline, confused by the display of gifts.
"Oui, but hey, free toys, Maddie!" said Riley.
"I guess…" Madeline conceded.
Lucy said "Riley the new song is done"

Riley said "A new song me, and Lucy my new friend wrote together before you all came." Lucy these are my friends. Lucy nodded as she sat down in a chair as Riley shared her ice-cream with her sister.

When Riley and Lucy were done singing they heard clapping from the doorway the group turned and saw Miss Clavel and Kathy standing in the doorway.
Miss Clavel: Come, mes petite. It is time for us to go. You and Riley have made a lovely show. "Do I have to?" Madeline asked the two adults with pleading eyes." Sorry Madeline but it's time for you to go back with Miss Clavel Riley will be home in a few days." Madeline nodded and gave her sister a final hug.
Narrator: "Goodbye," they said. "We'll come again."
Girls: Goodbye! We'll come again.
Narrator: And the little girls left in the rain.
"Well that was fun" Riley told her roommate.
Lucy said "Hey that Red Head finished the chocolate ice cream"
Riley said "Well that redhead is my little sister, what's the big deal." Then Riley whispered as long as Our Aunt Kathy don't find out about it"
The next few days passed slowly.
The girls were in the parlor Madeline was eagerly watching out the window waiting for her sister. Finally a taxi pulled up and Aunt Kathy helped Riley out. Madeline jumped up and before Miss Clavel could say anything Madeline had run out the front door. "Welcome Back Riley" Madeline said as she and Riley hugged one another tightly. The two twins then walked into the vine covered house.
Narrator: The girls were very happy when Riley finally came home.
"I'm home mes amis!" said Riley, "It's been lonely and boring without you guys."
"RILEY! Riley is home!" shouted all the girls and went to explore the rest of the Vined House that Riley missed the most. The twins went to the kitchen to see where their pet mice were.
Narrator: Later on, everyone went outside to go play Football with Riley. This time, Riley played along with the rest of the twelve little girls that cold, Fall day.
"It is a good thing they are letting us have a rematch against la waft!" said Madeline.
"Yeah!" agreed Riley.
Winter soon arrived, much to the girls' delight. Madeline showed off her ice-skating talents to the other girls, and she and Riley befriended a snowman. The twins also turned six years old.
That night Miss Clavel said . "Good night, little girls. Thank the Lord you are well. And now, go to sleep," she said.
Narrator: She turned out the light and closed the door.
