The steady rhythmic beeping woke her up from her short and uncomfortable sleep. It reminded her of something familiar, yet it was so different. Calleigh blinked the sleep from her eyes and slowly the realisation of where she was came upon her. Her eyes fell from the monitor recording a heartbeat to the unconcious man in the hospital bed who had caused her so much heartache over the past few days. The explicit trust that she had in him had broken to pieces, a trust that was built over the past eight years. You know I trust you with every fiber of my being she had said to him once and she expected just as much of him, especially since their relationship had moved from being merely colleagues and friends to so much more. He was her constant. He was – in the past.
The moment she had seen him in the truck with Sharova something shattered inside her. He was with him, he had chosen the other side, he had betrayed her.
Shooting him was an accident, one she felt inexpressibly guilty for. It was guilt that lead her to the hospital bed, the guilt of being responsible for his current situation. But the longer she sat there watching his body the more she realised that she could not be with him anymore. To much had happened, the bond he had so easily sacrificed was broken.
Slowly she stood up and walked through the door without turning back. She would hold back the tears of hurt and disapointment, at least for now. The only thing that stayed with her was the metallic beeping of the heartbeat monitor. It rung in her head, reminding her of the times she had fallen asleep her head resting on his chest, the steady rhythm providing a sense of comfort and safety. Now the cold mechanical sound, familiar and yet so different, only symbolised everything that was lost.
