Calamitous Intervention

Chapter One - Prologue

A green-haired witch backflips onto a cliff holding a staff, glaring up at a large, imposing figure. It would be a huge purple snake with horns and yellow glowing eyes. "Foolish child! I could swallow you whole!" It yells, before hissing at her.

"Do not underestimate me, Gildersnake, for I am the Good Witch Azura, warrior of peace!" The witch replies, her hair blowing back and forth. She then immediately drops to one knee, holding her staff like a rocket launcher. "Now eat this, sucka!"

The witch's staff glows, launching blasts of fire that hits the snake and knock it back, making it cry out. "NO! My only weakness! Dying!"

"And that's the end!" A 15-year-old Latina girl says, smiling innocently while holding a doll of Azura and a live snake. Her name would be Luz Noceda. In front of her would be her mother Camila and Principal Hal. She'd be in the principal's office for getting into trouble once again.

"The end of what?" Camila replies, not fully understanding the story her daughter just told them.

"My book report," Luz says. "I think I knocked it out of the park."

"Your book report is why you're in here," the principal tells her, pointing to the door which would have two screaming students running by with snakes biting their heads. This would be the result of an experiment gone wrong.

"Oh, so that's where the backup snakes were," Luz says.

"And what were you going to do with this?" her mother asks, picking up a bundle of fireworks tied together with rope. She'd be concerned for her daughter's safety with dangerous equipment like this.

Luz frowns, before muttering and looking down. "That was for the act three closer..."

"Mija," Camila states, walking up to her, "I love your creativity, but it's gotten out of hand. Do you remember why you were in the principal's office the last three times?"

The scene cuts to Luz at an audition of Romeo and Juliet from two weeks ago, holding a spork. "O happy dagger, give me death!" On the stage, she stabbed it into her chest before tearing the front of her outfit, making several sausages fall out. The other kids on the stage ran away screaming, ruining the scene.

At another point in time, Luz had been attaching a pigeon head onto a squirrel's body, with the label "Baby Griffin" below it. "Now for the final anatomically correct touch: spider breath."

She opened the model's beak, and spiders flooded out, crawling all over her and the classroom. This caused a commotion, as everybody panicked and screamed. At another moment, she was a part of cheerleader tryouts and a student did a backflip, having impressed almost everybody.

"You think that's an impressive trick?" Luz cut in. "Take a look at this."

She turned around and showed her eyelids inside out, squishing them. "Bleep bloop bleep!" In response, the other girls screamed at this and ran away from her, while others watched in disgust.

Camila continues, pulling something out of her purse. "We all love that you express yourself, but if you can't learn to separate fantasy from reality, you may need to spend the summer here." She hands Luz a pamphlet for Reality Check Summer Camp.

She takes a look at it, frowning. She'd definitely not want to go there. She decides to reassure her mother. "Don't worry, mom. I won't let you down!" She gets up, raising her Azura figurine in the air. "No more weirdness!"

Suddenly, the live snake Luz was holding shoots out of her hand and bites the principal, making him cry out. Luz winces, realizing how much she just messed up. "That doesn't count, right?"

Anne Boonchuy, a 13-year-old Thai American girl, rides on her bike to school in California. She pulls up and parks her bike, about to walk to the entrance, when an orange-haired girl walks up to her, grinning.

"Hey, Boobchuy!" Maggie greets her mockingly. "Whatcha eatin'? A puke bun?"

Anne scowls at her, tired of her constant insults. "It's not a bun, Maggie. It's Khao Niew Bing, a traditional Thai snack made up of rice and coconut milk. My mom made it for me because it's my birthday."

Maggie's smirk fades. "Oh, well, happy birthday." All of a sudden she reaches out and tries to yank the rice bun out of Anne's hand. "Give me that!"

"Hey! Get your own Thai mom!" Anne grunts, as the two fight over the snack, yanking it back and forth.

"Hey, Margot!" a voice calls out from the sidelines. The two of them look over to see one of Anne's best friends: Sasha Waybright. Behind her, a teen with green glasses and a purple mohawk plays a metal guitar solo.

"Leave her alone!" she demands. "Also, nice guitar solo, Vince."

"Yeah!" Vince replies.

Anne looks at her, relieved to see her friend.

"Oh, yeah?" Maggie states, pointing a finger at Sasha. "Or else what?"

"Or else you can forget coming to my awesome house party next week," Sasha says, walking up to her and crossing her arms. "It'll be really sad when the whole class is enjoying the pool without you."

Maggie frowns nervously. "Aw, jeez, Sash. I was just playin'. Here." She shoves the rice bun into Anne's hands, walking away. Anne smiles. "Thanks, dude."

"No worries," Sasha says. "You just gotta speak their language. But never mind that. Happy birthday, girl!"

The two girls squeal, dancing around in celebration, when suddenly the school bell rings and Sasha scoffs. "Buzzkill..."

Before Anne walks toward the entrance, Sasha places a hand on her shoulder, having an idea. "You know what? Forget school. It's your birthday and we gotta make it count. Let's get out of here and celebrate in style."

Anne is unsure about completely skipping the school day. "Oof, skip school? I don't know, Sash-"

"Anne, this is your thirteenth birthday," Sasha insists. "You only get one of these. So let's make it the best birthday in the history of birthdays."

The Thai girl thinks about it for a moment. "Well... all right. I gotta be home by six o'clock, though. My parents are throwing a big party and they really want me to be there."

Sasha waves this off. "Right, right, you got it." She pulls out her phone, texting another one of their friends. "Let's get Marcy in on this too, before she goes all nerdy on us. Meanwhile, let's get this thing started!" They run off, going to play some games and other shenanigans together while waiting for their other friend to join them.

Marcy Wu would've stopped by the public library right before school started, going to return a book she borrowed. She'd be in a hurry to get there on time. "I forgot to come here early and return this! I can't be late!"

She stumbles around, returning the book to the librarian. Before she leaves, she is about to say something to them, but she wouldn't look where she is going and bumps into a cart, nearly falling over. "Ouch!" A book falls out of it and she looks at the cover curiously. "Huh?"

She picks it up, reading the title. Dr. P's Extraordinary Guide To Magic & Mystery.

Her curiosity takes over, and she flips through the pages quickly, chuckling at some of the pictures, before she stumbles on a page different from the others. "Whoa! Calamity Box? Travel to other worlds?"

She thinks about it, before laughing at it. "Oh, goofy stuff. Cool artwork though." She picks up her phone and takes a picture of it. She suddenly receives text messages from Sasha saying: "Stop Studying ya nerd", "IT'S ANNE'S BDAY!", and "MEET US DOWNTOWN 🎂💃"

Marcy's eyes widen, now facing a dilemma. "Anne's birthday! But I can't skip school! My parents would kill me!"

She texts Sasha back about that and she gets the typical Sasha responses. "Dude Who cares? It's just one day" and "Youre already the top of the class. Come Join us now"

Marcy contemplates this, not wanting to get on her friend's bad side. She chuckles nervously. "Sure, what's one day gonna hurt?" She reluctantly puts the book back and runs out of the library, heading to the nearby arcade.

She'd soon join Anne and Sasha and the two would have fun for hours straight. While Sasha is pushing Anne around in a cart, Marcy watches, laughing at their antics, but then receives a voice message from her father.

She frowns and walks away while the other two are distracted, listening to it. Since her father would be busy with work, he'd left a message for her earlier explaining everything. When it stops, she tears up, trying to keep herself together.

Anne and Sasha come over, finding Marcy. Sasha places a hand on her shoulder, shaking her. "Mar Mar, what are you looking at?"

Marcy doesn't reply, as she runs away, leaving the two of them confused. "Marcy?!"

She cries, running through the streets. She doesn't stop, wanting to be alone. After a while, she pants and stops in front of a thrift shop. She leans on the window and looks through it, noticing something familiar on the shelf. "Huh... That's weird... Is that..."

Marcy pulls out her phone, comparing it to the photo she took earlier. It would be the Calamity Box, just sitting right there in the store. She zooms into the picture, reading the words: "Travel to other worlds", and then she has an idea.

She then gets text messages from Anne and Sasha asking where she went and she smiles, texting back to them. "I think I just found the perfect birthday present for Anne." She sends a picture of the box to her friends. This is perfect!

Anne and Sasha walk through the streets, trying to find where Marcy went. Suddenly, Sasha gets a text on her phone, and her eyes widen before she grins. "So that's why Mar Mar ran off."

She shows the picture to Anne. "She found the perfect gift for you. Ha! A frog music box for a frog lover." She rubs her chin curiously. "I wonder if those gems are real. Come on, let's go."

Soon enough, the two meet up with Marcy and see the music box in person. Sasha pressures Anne to steal it and she gives in, walking into the thrift store and stopping in front of the Calamity Box. She would question her decision and want to reconsider, but she wouldn't want to upset Sasha and Marcy. "Alright, Anne, you can do this."

She reaches over and grabs it off the shelf before shoving it into her backpack and hurrying out of the store. "Alright, can we get out of here?"

Sasha rolls her eyes before she leads them to the nearest alleyway. "Come on, let's check out your gift before we go back to partying." Before Anne can protest, she unzips her backpack and pulls out the music box, handing it to her.

Anne shrugs and sits down, not expecting much from it. It's just a plain old music box, right?

Luz stands in front of her house, disappointed in herself. Behind her, Camila leaves the house and walks up to her, hugging her. "Oh! Oh, my baby! Now, don't worry. Summer camp is only going to be for three months. You'll be so busy balancing checkbooks and learning to... appreciate public radio, the time will fly by!"

"But I don't like any of that stuff," Luz protests. "I like editing anime clips to music and... and reading fantasy books with convoluted backstories."

"Mija, your fantasy world is holding you back," her mother reminds her, wanting to do what's best for her. "Do you have any friends? Real ones, not imagined or drawn, or reptilian?"

Luz doesn't respond, saddened, as she walks over to the trash can. Her mother continues. "Summer camp is a chance to make some friends, but you have to try. Can you do that?"

"Yes, Mom," Luz replies dejectedly, placing her Good Witch Azura book into the trash. Camila's phone vibrates, and she picks it up, checking her messages. "Oh. I gotta go to work."

She walks up to her daughter and kisses her on the forehead. "Your bus is coming soon. Text me when you get there. Cuídate mucho, Mija. ¡Qué te vaya bien." She walks off, leaving Luz alone.

"Bye, Mom," Luz mutters before she glances to her right and notices her book is gone. She gasps, digging through the trash frantically. "Where is it? Where is it?" She hears a hoot and looks up to see a tiny owl carrying a sack with her Azura book in it. It flies off, and she runs after it. "Tiny trash thief!"

She chases it and sees an abandoned house. She pauses, before hesitantly going forward.

Meanwhile, Anne Boonchuy opens the music box and sparks of energy pour out, making them flinch. A bright light engulfs them, as a pillar of blue energy lights up the city, surprising many.

A wave of strange energy goes through the city and the entire country. And as Luz is about to enter the portal door, suddenly it flickers, disrupted by the Calamity energy from across the country.

"What the?!" Her eyes widen as the door cracks a little, with the portal turning blue for a split second. It pulls her in and she screams, flying into it. "MOM!" A white light engulfs her as she opens her eyes in an unstable rift, seeing blurry figures of three different girls in front of her. A vortex of calamity energy consumes them, sending them flying in different directions.

After what feels like minutes, Luz opens her eyes in an unfamiliar place, hearing insects around her. She gets up, seeing tall trees surrounding her with glowing mushrooms on the side. "Where am I?!"

She turns to see the portal door gone. "Oh no! No, no, no!" She takes her phone and tries to text Camila, but there would be no service. "Not good!" She then notices something laying on the ground next to her and picks it up. It would be a strange music box. "Huh... Guess I'll take this with me..."

Anne opens her eyes, getting up in a strange tent. "Huh? Where did..." She looks around, seeing a lot of strange objects and junk. "What the heck is this stuff? ... Sasha? Marcy?"

"Finally, you're back," she hears a voice and flinches before approaching the source of it. "Hello?"

To Be Continued in Chapter Two

I hope you enjoyed the first chapter of Calamitous Intervention. This story is about what if Anne and Luz switched places right as they are isekai'd into their respective worlds.

You may notice some changes in this chapter, such as Sasha taking Anne out of school earlier, or Marcy discovering the Calamity Box earlier. I did this so these events would happen simultaneously and make as much sense as possible.
