Chapter 10
Sherry still didn't wake up; the only change was that the anger on people faces had been subsided with worries and anticipation. All of them waited for the clock to struck 11:00 AM, so that they can know a few of answers to their questions. Nobody ate breakfast that morning. Everyone was silent except for the world outside after all they were in hospital and Sherry was not the only patient.
Sometime before 11:00 AM, David walked out of the room with Barry and John after him, off readying themselves for interrogation. The only person who seemed like to threaten the girl was them of course. Leon had resorted to referring Kathleen as woman again, since referring someone by their name made him feel that they were close to him and he didn't want to be associated with her anyhow. A few minutes later John came in and asked all the guys to accompany him and they all followed him.
At eleven they were ready for the interrogation. David knew that Leon, John, Carlos and Ark would have no effect on the woman during interrogation, so they were standing in the room adjacent to interrogation overlooking the interrogation through the glass which was mirror on the other side. David was sitting in front of Barry they both were playing chess, they played chess to relax themselves off a bit before she was brought in for interrogation.
Kathleen was brought in by two agents who were guarding the room in which she was kept; she was still wearing the same dress which Leon had bought her yesterday. David and Barry continued their game for a little then Barry stood up the Kathleen was made to be seated in his place facing David now. David looked at her with a stern expression on his face while other men stood around them forming a circle. He noticed there was no sign of fear or remorse on Kathleen's face; she was calm and composed and if she was in nervous at all, she was doing an excellent job in hiding it. She looked David straight in eyes which made David feel as if he was in danger. He was not afraid of her but the way she was looking at everyone made him feel that she was death angel of some sort. He noticed her eyeing his handgun but he did not make any effort to take gun away and became more cautious about it. Leon and John have told him what she could do. David looked at others and got a 'what are you waiting for?' look.
So he asked her," you know why you're here right?" She didn't gave him any reply, so he continued, "look you have to answer every question that we ask here; looking at the situation you're at a disadvantage."
"Yeah and if you don't answer them, don't blame us what happen afterwards", Barry kinda threatened her in his hoarse voice.
"So miss tell us everything you know?", said Billy giving her a deathly stare.
"You think you can threaten me with a family man and a ex-convict do you?", she asked David with an amused smile.
'How did she know about our backgrounds', David tried to keep his expressions neutral trying not to show any sort of opening, "Let's take it from the start then as they do it in interrogation. What is your name?", David asked and looked at the game of chess which he was playing with Barry and almost involuntary moved a piece.
"You already know that", she replied and surprisingly moved a piece of black which was being played by Barry previously.
"What do you know about Umbrella and their plans?" David asked again moving a piece.
"More than any of you here and in the adjacent room", she replied and immediately moved a piece as if it was a mere reflex.
"Is Wesker alive?" David asked moving a piece.
"Don't you know that?", she again gave a useless answer and again played her turn.
"If we knew why would we ask you?", David said, again moving a piece.
She moved the piece with the speed of light and said "I don't know that, I guess because you guys like to live in a delusion, that's why."
"What was in those vials that we recovered from you?" David asked feeling the frustration.
"That's something you know very well but do not know too well", she again talked in circles.
"Stop talking in circles!", Barry shouted at her.
She continuing her game of chess with David looked at Barry and Barry felt uncomfortable and then she said, "Stop asking questions then."
"What in the world you shot Sherry with?" David asked concerned.
"You'll know soon", she replied looking back at him.
"Will she be okay? Did you shot her with another virus; you know her health is deteriorating by seconds", David said not able to maintain his calm composure anymore.
"No", she answered monotonously.
David didn't know the answer was for which question he asked, he cursed himself for asking two contrasting questions at the same time. He knew if he asked one more time she wouldn't answer his question. He could feel the anger of two men standing by his sides. Even though knowing what she would say he asked, "Sherry's health in deteriorating, what…"
"9 45 36", she cut David in between and spoke some random numbers.
"What?", David asked not getting her.
"9 45 36", she repeated looking him in eyes.
"What does that mean?" David asked her.
"It means what it means", she answered.
"You're useless", Billy spat.
"Then kill me", she said calmly as if she was talking about someone else.
"Stop playing games. You know we could kill you anytime cause we don't trust you", David yelled losing his cool.
"Me neither and I am done playing", she said with a smile, "Checkmate", she told him.
"What?", David asked a little bit confused.
She bent forward and said "I said Checkmate!", in a soft voice. During all their conversation he was having the game of chess with Kathleen which he and Barry started earlier. He looked down on the board and noticed that she had cornered his king and won the game, "I think I am done with interrogation and think you won't let me out so I think its time to go my cell", she added to David. David nodded and the agents who brought her took her away.
As the agents were taking her back she briefly looked where Leon was standing, 'can she look through the glass?', he thought then put the thought aside. Through the magic glass they didn't hear anything but saw nearly everything. David asked her question after question. He and other guys tried to threaten her but she kept her cool. They all decided beforehand that they will have a meeting about the interrogation, so they all made their way to conference room. In the conference room they waited for others to join who weren't there in interrogation or overlooking it. When everyone had arrived David told them their interrogation was as fruitless as a bamboo tree.
"What do you mean she didn't tell anything", Chris asked a little confused.
"That she didn't tell anything", Billy repeated the same thing.
"Everything that we asked, she answered them in questions", Bruce said in an annoyed tone.
"Not only that she also beat David in chess", Barry told them sounding a little impressed.
"What? She beat you in chess?! No way! I don't believe it!" Claire said. She didn't know chess much but knew David is genius in chess.
"No she really did", Billy told her.
"Yeah without even looking at the board", David told them.
"What! You are kidding me", Sheva literally screamed in astonishment.
"No, I noticed it she only looked at it when she entered the room and that too for a brief moment and after that she played the game not looking at the board at all. Most of the times she looked at my face and sometimes she looked at Barry, Bruce and Billy. On top of that she continued the game which Barry and I started before she arrived and Barry tell them the weird part", David spoke in astonishment.
"What weird part?" Jill asked a little bit confused.
"The weird part is that guys I was losing the game. David would have beaten me after two or three turns", Barry told them.
"So what we're getting at", John asked.
"That she doesn't trust us and won't tell us anything until she has complete faith in us", Barry told them.
"What did we do to lose her trust", Ark said.
"Yeah she was the one who can't be trusted, we're not the one who need to gain her trust", said Claire angrily.
"Calm down we have to gain her trust, I know it's difficult but I think she'll tell everything once we gain her trust", David said trying to calm everyone down.
"Did she tell anything what she shot Sherry with and if she is going to be okay or not?", Rebecca asked the most important question that everyone wanted to know the answer to.
David dreaded this question but knew that he would be faced with it, "As Bruce told earlier she talked in circles and answered in questions", David didn't wanted to tell them that the only answer she gave was a negative and to his which question he didn't know also she said some random numbers which didn't make any sense, "Let's just call this meeting off I am tired and I know you guys are tired too. So, just do whatever you like but you can't kill her", David said rising from his seat, he really felt tired and old all of a sudden.
"Can we beat the crap out of her? I really want to please", John asked as if a 5-year old is asking for candy. Everybody laughed but not heartily as they used to if he had cracked the joke in some other situation.
Everybody went to have dinner while Rebecca told them she would meet them after checking on Sherry but everybody insisted that she go with them together after dinner so she stayed back thinking that it would not make any difference how many times she checked on her; her health was still deteriorating and everybody wanted Rebecca not to tell them that once more and if she checked on Sherry somebody's is bound to ask. So without much discussion on the topic they went to eat dinner.
It took them hours to finish their dinner, even when Barry's wife was constantly reminding them to eat, who brought her cooking in hopes to cheer them up but it was like they didn't want to eat but was sitting just to pass the time. Everyone wanted to be as late as possible to go to the Sherry's room. When they completed their dinner or what was more like time-pass they headed to Sherry's room.
Rebecca didn't rush to check on her and just avoided any type of examination of her condition. Claire seated herself next to Sherry holding her hand again. While others including Leon avoided looking at her limp body. Leon thought to himself if he hadn't made that deal he wouldn't have to see this. He cursed himself. Short time after David joined them. He told them that he was going to report to the President after the dinner, he joined the guys that were sitting in a corner.
"The President asked me to hand her custody to them. They would use their methods to make her speak up", David said particularly to no one but in such a manner that they all could hear him.
"So what did you say?", John asked him sitting straight.
"I said okay", David replied.
"What? Why David?", Chris asked him, sounding totally revolted of the thought.
"Look guys we have tried all that we could do. You all know we can't get things out of her", David spoke in a voice which told them that it took all his effort to speak.
"How can we she's...", Ark stopped in midsentence but he didn't had to complete his sentence to get his point across, everyone knew what he was trying to say and they all felt the same.
Although Kathleen didn't want to be with them but it wouldn't change the fact that she was on the same boat, she could try and isolate herself but now that they knew there was one more member on the boat they can't just leave her on her own, even though she might hurt them but they knew instinctively things were not as they seemed to be. They knew the consequences if she was handed over to government custody, she'd might come face to face with another hell and they all knew she didn't deserve after all she must have been through something much worse than that.
"Hey guys she's… she's moving guys. Becky check on her quick", Claire tore apart the silence with these words. Rebecca rushed to check Sherry. Everyone could see that she was making little movements. Everyone gathered around her bed as she slowly opened her eyes and looked at them.
