Names Sodapop, Don't Wear It Out
Greased back blonde hair, shining brown eyes, and a lean but built form. Loved cars, loved girls. Now didn't he sound like a typical heartthrob?
He did the James-Bond-minus-the-accent introduction. "I'm Curtis, Sodapop Curtis." He told me that's his name and not to wear it out. I found it difficult to wear out a name like Sodapop, but I was too busy getting bitten by that love bug to tell him.
"Sandy," I simply replied, holding my hand out for him to shake. His fingers coiled around my hand and he brought it up to his perfect pink lips, gently kissing the top.
"Short for Sandra, I'm guessin'?"
"You'd be guessin' right."
"I've seen you 'round town. You're friends with Steve's girl, Evie, right?" He swiped his DX hat off his blonde head and wiped the sweat off his hairline.
"Yeah, Evie's my best friend. You and Steve friends?" I asked.
"Steve's been my best buddy since we were little, as far as I can remember. He's like another brother to me."
"You have a brother already?"
He nodded. "Two. Darry's twenty and Ponyboy's fourteen. Pony's real smart, unlike me, and Dar's a big jock; he's a football player and he's got a real pretty girlfriend."
"What makes you think you're not smart?" I questioned.
"Well, I'm thinkin' of droppin' out; only am passin' Auto Mechanics and Gym," he chuckled.
"You seem pretty smart to me, Sodapop," I told him.
He grinned. "I gotta get back to work. See you 'round!"
"Goodbye, Sodapop," I said, smiling as he ran off into the shop, waving behind his back.
If only he knew I'd be the first girl to break his heart.
